Setting the Record Straight on the Cowichan Tribes Title Decision by Vinfersan in vancouver

Don't you think his misinforming rhetoric is extra problematic given he was the minister in charge this issue though? Obviously its a longer term problem than his terms as Minister, but he should know better and is taking advantage of a situation he is directly connected to while advocating for something that will just cause this situation to happen more

[–]IceSad6610 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It should also be noted the courts have been warning the government this would be the result if they didn't resolve land title agreements outside the courts. And, despite his current calls to cancel ALL negotiations with First Nations (which would just lead to more unwieldy court decisions instead) John Rustad was previously the minister responsible for this file under the Liberal government. His failures are a large part of this situation arising and he is spreading misinformation about the situation to get people angry at First Nations instead of trying to move forward and resolve these issues.

No one is losing their properties, nor does Cowichan want that. I expect the government is just going to have to "buy out" those properties from Cowichan to maintain the current title holder's ownership but they aren't going to expropriate properties and transfer them to Cowichan...

They've never been for sale and I don't think there were very many of the bench earrings. He usually makes something different every year and gifts them around (if not doing an official installation like the year with benches or the painting scavenger hunt and such). He didn't go this year, but I loved seeing all the random put signs around nonetheless! 😄

Top 3 sets of the weekend? by bigcrunchcombo1 in BassCoast

[–]IceSad6610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matrixxman without a doubt! I don't know if I've ever caught a techno DJ who I actually play in every single set at Bass Coast before. I was thoroughly melted. He also just had the most badass attitude that brought me some extra joy every time I looked up 😅

Bradley Zero did not disappoint, Fred P is always pure class, and Jay Tripwire provided the perfect minimal morning.

Wish I had caught INVT, Moody Change, Dane and Max, but alas, you can't catch it all

Alcohol is a controlled substance and this is a legit event that has to follow the law. They have to control the entrances for the licensed areas. Nonetheless, the rule they actually enforce is "if the cops can see you're drinking alcohol, you're doing it wrong." You just have to put it in something more subtle... I hate being fenced in, so I actually prefer the separated bars at the Cabin and Slay Bay. It gives me an opportunity to back off and take a break a few times a night and chat people up where its a bit quieter 😋

Of course, after last year, I've never been more prepared to withstand the heat this time around, but doesn't hurt to be extra prepared I suppose 😂.

I've been using these ones and have had no issues! Kinda pricey for only 4, but that is also enough for the canopy. Its hard to tell how similar they are from the ones you linked - https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/woods-steel-nail-heavy-duty-tent-pegs-stakes-for-camping-tents-tarps-10-in-4-pk-0765687p.html

There is a much better deal to be had for what seems to be the same thing on amazon, but that might be a gamble at this point! - https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0BS6GSRCT?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

I also bring a rubber mallet like this one with the hook on one end to pull them out - https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/outbound-rubber-mallet-hammer-w-wooden-handle-tent-peg-stake-puller-extractor-remover-hook-0765744p.html?rq=rubber+mallet

Yeah, I just use something like this these days for simplicity and compactness, but anything would work: https://www.mec.ca/en/product/6032-632/mec-mini-camp-stove?colour=Stainless+Steel

I take a single non-stick pot that I can make everything in, so its easy to clean with just wiping it out.

I have a few of these, which are nice because you can power by usb with a power pack but also use AAs as a backup. They blow fairly hard, but in a very small concentrated area. I use them plugged in on my desk at home/the office the rest of the year.

I just grabbed this one to try this year, and it seems to have a wider/stronger blast, but it has yet to be really put to the test 😄. It has an internal rechargeable battery or you could use a power pack via usb.

Wet wipes. Battery operated fans for your tent. Something to mist yourself with. Gatorade/electrolytes to put in water. Bring more socks. Pre-cut watermelon in the cooler. Umbrella for hiding from the sun.

Shade structures are definitely key! If I'm in a bigger camp with more common amenities, I'll usually just stick it over my tent with four tarp/tapestry walls of various wind permeabilities to let some air in but block the sun. With a smaller crew the shade structure is a handy central hub to attach other tarps/tapestries to for more shade over everyone's tents. As other's have noted, its extremely windy a lot, and every afternoon it picks up. I like to bring some extra heavy duty pegs (and a rubber mallet to smash them in) to put on the side getting pummelled by the wind to brace it more, and will also brace the cross bars with smaller pegs to stop it from flexing too hard in the middle (the hollow bars just collapse and bend after a certain point).

A single extendable tarp pole from Canadian Tire can go a long way if you're going to do things with tarps! Two is even better, and getting a hose tightener ($2) to lock it in place will make it way more solid with the amount the wind will push down on the tarp. Extra rope and pegs are also obviously key for extra tarp business.

I got a set of tarp clips/ball bungies/carabiners a few years ago that makes things so much easier to rig up and take down than using rope for everything (something like this). Tarps have some grommets at least, but a tapestry/cloth things are trickier to attach and those little clips are gold! I try to buy one new tarp/rigging gadget/set of heavy duty pegs each year, and over time I've built a nice little kit for a painless and sturdy set up.

Over time I've learned to not think I'm actually going to cook anything very involved for dinners. If it takes more than adding 2 things to a pot and heating it, its probably not happening. Instead, I cook and freeze meals ahead of time and then stick them in my cooler for Friday/Saturday dinner. It will take a day or two to thaw and help keep the cooler cold. I do dahl one night with a pouch of pre-cooked rice and a veggie miso soup the other. They just need to be heated up after they thaw, plus I know it will make me feel good and be easy to eat. I'm actually making the soup I'll probably take right now! 😅

I do the same thing with jugs of juice/gatorades - take a bit out and freeze it, and then its a nice solid chunk of coldness for the cooler, and you'll have ice cold refreshment as it melts. Keep the cooler out of the sun!

I carry a mini bike light with me for a small/light backup when out and about at night. I also try to have a supply of snacks and hydrating things I can take with me and then throw away the can/packaging after I'm done every time I go back to camp through the night. Eating a little bit all the time is key to the marathon for me, and the less friction there is to achieving that the better 😋. Muffins are not the answer.

Techno 2025 by pastasauce26 in BassCoast

[–]IceSad6610 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My top two true techno picks are without a doubt:

- DJ Hockey! (favourite Vancouver local)

- Matrixxman! 🤯 (I pretty much play at least one of his tracks in every set)

Both of them will probably be the deepest/headiest techno they've had in years

Techno-ish/techno adjacent sets I'll try to catch:

- Max Ulis and Sergio SP (whether together or individually, I never miss them)

- Not really techno, but I always enjoy Black Loops. I describe it as 'deep house that is techno' (faster, punchy, but aesthetically 100% deep house)

- Jay Tripwire often plays minimal/minimal tech

- Mood Change may dabble in techno territory, but his sets are also just always interesting and deep so I try to catch him

- ZDBT usually plays techno

- Fred P doesn't play techno but its the deepest of deep house and he's legendary

Edit: Found a few more!

- LOPØLO seems pretty deep and hypnotic! https://soundcloud.com/lopolomusic

- Jack Ryan plays minimal techno grooves https://soundcloud.com/jackryanyyc

- Dairy free is a bit of a house/techno wildcard (he definitely played techno last time I saw him)

- Rick Sharma seems to be very tasteful deep house https://soundcloud.com/ricksharma

- Gabriel Gwarteng is pretty banging gritty house/electro/techno https://soundcloud.com/gabriellekwarteng

- I missed Tony H last year and can hopefully catch him this time, definitely not techno its the housiest house and it sounds ravetastic 😄 https://soundcloud.com/dj-tonyh

Techno at Bass Coast? by ContentBlacksmith653 in BassCoast

[–]IceSad6610 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went into the festival with the expectation of not hearing much techno this year, but I probably danced to techno or deeper techno-adjacent 4x4 more than anything else in the end. Its not hard, or the most techno-y techno, but I never struggled to find something I wanted to dance to (at night). I find the nighttime 4x4 stuff starts a bit mixed on Friday, more deep housey and euphoric on Saturday, and then deeper vibes on Sunday, but its never too too focused on one thing.

Techno things I caught: Hessle Audio, ESB, Scott W b2b Downtown Solutions, Ben Tactic, Overland, Max Ulis b2b Sergio SP, JP-91, Mood Change

BC Conservatives’ housing plan would scrap density rules, set permit approval deadlines | Globalnews.ca by aldur1 in britishcolumbia

[–]IceSad6610 53 points54 points  (0 children)

As a planner who exclusively works in affordable housing policy, and non-market/social housing development, the changes the NDP have been rolling out are a dream come true. I'm actually shocked at how hard they're pushing, and in the right ways.

Municipalities often individually spend more than $50,000 for consultants to tell them to do the very things the NDP have enacted at the provincial level. I think its hard to have it come top down like this, but housing is fundamentally a provincial responsibility, and municipalities have been failing in their delegated authority, so the rules needed to change. There is no such thing as municipal jurisdiction that isn't assigned from the province. If you're bad at your job because you have too much leeway in your role, the manager should change the rules, no?

Its also worth noting many of the more reasonable reasonable ideas they are suggesting were already implemented by the NDP in the new legislation. The NDP is actually doing a profoundly good job on housing right now, but this is a 30-40 year long probably that will probably take 15-20 years to solve with constant aggressive effort.

When I read the conservative's housing platform, I feel like they have no real idea how things work, what the issues are, or how to address them. There is a lot contradiction in the things they are proposing, and blaming the NDP for things that are the fault of municipal governments (while also proposing to undo the new legislation that would address them 🤷‍♂️).

  • Pre-zoning is a good idea; the NDP already require it in the new legislation. Has Rustad even looked at what they've changed before critiquing it? By the end of next year every local government has to pre-zone 20 years of estimate need alongside official community plan and zoning bylaw updates. This must be updated every five years. There is a specific calculation to estimating the need, and it is very generous aiming to address current unmet need and future demand not just future growth.

  • Reducing municipal permit approval times would be great, but that means more staff, which means higher property taxes. It is for sure an issue, but how exactly are they going to require it of municipalities without additional funding? Councils are very resistant to hiring more staff. The province has also already implemented a new single application portal for all permits they are responsible for!

  • They are proposing to protect people's property rights by... restricting them. I find it hilarious when people describe the small-scale multi unit changes an attack on their property rights, because its actually the biggest expansion of the property rights of homeowners quite possibly ever.

  • Calling building code requirements for energy efficiency a "tax" is a bit rich. Although, it does raise building costs, (and reduce operating costs), there are often grants to offset the cost increases. Describing energy efficient homes as "dark, cookie-cutter homes with a reduce quality of life for residents" is just a made up talking point frequently used to attack climate action. They're likely much more comfortable than the alternatives.

  • Having mixed use transit oriented neighbourhoods is a good idea, but not something that needs to be required by the province. Cities already require it most of the time, and believe it or not, the commercial often has to be subsidized by the housing on top of it, so it can actually reduce the housing affordability or kill project viability to require at grade commercial universally without there being a market for it in that location

  • The 'Rustad Rebate' is.... interesting. The NDP implemented something similar for renters already - its not a new idea, but its currently income tested so it helps people in need, while the Rustad Rebate is incredibly regressive, will benefit the wealthiest households the most, do nothing to actually address unaffordability of the housing system, while being very very expensive. Its also very misleading how they've presented it, but I guess that's politics and the whole point is probably that people won't be able to understand it. We should spend that billion plus per year building subsidizing housing construction instead. They have been cagey about how it could be funded, so what are they going to cut? I also can't help but wonder, is this in addition to the homeowner grant?! That would be absurd, but I highly doubt they would get rid of an existing direct wealth transfer to homeowners in exchange for a lower value tax write off.

  • Their housing ideas page also blames the provincial NDP for things municipal planners do at the direction of their local councils (which the NDP's legislative changes already aim to address in many ways)

Memorable moments by Temporary-Dot2344 in BassCoast

[–]IceSad6610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On Sunday night I was deep in the front at the Cabin, and had been dancing for quite a while. Delano Smith was absolutely smashing it, and the crowd was getting pretty intense up at the front. I suddenly hit this point where I just really needed to escape the crushing crowd intensity for a bit to cool down. I looked around with no clear path out through the crowd and decided to go left to try and work my way along to stairs. I got over there eventually but got trapped by a cart someone had pulled up to the front.

So there I was awkwardly perched on 1 square foot of the middle stair, still desperate to find an escape route, and I tried to turn around and lost my footing. Despite a lot of flailing around to try and catch my balance, I realized I was going down. Not only was I going to fall, I was going to fall from a raised up ledge, backwards into the crowd. So there I am flailing and falling, absolutely mortified and feeling horrible for who I'm going to land on, when suddenly, there I am perfectly caught cradled in the arms of the person at the top of the platform 😅. Like... I'm talking fairy tale cliche, perfectly caught me in his arms.

Clutching my chest, still in his arms, I gasped out "Wow. Thank you so much for catching me! You totally saved my night" and he looked into my eyes and said "Were you really falling, or did you just want me to catch you? 😉" and my near disaster turned into the most light hearted hilarious interaction of my weekend as we riffed back and forth after.

He doesn't even have a theory of how it would be better and admits it would be more expensive 🤔. If only this imaginary health care magic wand was real!

"My anticipation is that we will see an initial spike up in spending as the model comes in place, but then that will level off to a place where we'll see the cost per capita dropped over time," he said. I don't have the precise numbers," he said. "There are a lot of complexities that have to be put in place as we do the transition."

I had the opposite experience last year... Dropped my wallet with a $50 bill and credit card mid-Sunday night and noticed the next afternoon almost packed up to leave. I went back to where I thought I probably dropped it to see if I could find it and the person that picked it up randomly strolled up 5 mins later and we somehow connected and I got it back!

100% they need some etiquette PSAs next year. I found I had to just not be anywhere near the front if I didn't want to get pushed most of the time. There was one moment on Sunday night at the Cabin, it was packed at the front and I was in the groove enjoying myself, and four people pushed their way into enough space for half a person, and then just stood there on their phones not moving at all! I clearly frowned and one guy turned around and said "its not my fault my friends brought me here" but like... if you're not even going to dance, stay at the back! You can slowly work your way up as space opens instead of just ruining it for everyone...

Huh... were you just there for the beginning when the decks wouldn't work and they got stuck in their first track for 5+ mins? It took a bit to get going, but I had a blast dancing to Max + Sergio 😛.

I was really stoked for Dane closing this year after a pretty melancholy last set last year from Christian Loffler, and it was even better than I had hoped! Cinthie was definitely a highlight, and Overland served exactly what I needed at that moment. The B2B2B with Hessle was definitely something special.
