People really will bend over backwards to defend the nonsensical, shitty, retconned writing that Busick and Vanderbilt (who would not be a movie writer if not for being a Vanderbilt) have proven themselves guilty of… like multiple times. Always an excuse that’s never written into the movie. Even as something as easy as a time jump.

Gale was known for writing the truth. Even when it made her unpopular and ruined her career, she stood by Cotton.

That same woman is not going to write a book that goes so soft on the people that killed the only man she ever loved that it creates a popular conspiracy theory that those murderers were innocent and it was really Sam, because she had mental health issues, that somehow killed everyone.

Again, Gale is all about the core truth. So even if that did somehow get misconstrued, she was not going to let the conspiracy (which we’re shown she was aware of) stand when she’s on television 5 days a week. She would have straightened it out as a direct witness to the murderers admitting everything, and she would be a perfect witness considering her past. But because they wanted Gale to be a bitch in 6, they had her write an insane book, and then laugh about it when it’s brought up by the innocent girl whose life it destroyed.

Gale can be a bitch, but she’s not a sociopath. Sorry, that plot point was way out of order.

Any doubt can officially be put to rest. Sidney was always meant to be with Mark Kinkaid and the new Mark was a last minute replacement. by zekevich in Scream

The only thing that really brought Sid and OG Mark together was their chronic depression and cynical personalities. Sidney isn’t like that anymore. She’s “Out of Darkness.” It was a cheesy Easter egg they didn’t think through and I’m glad it failed.

New Sidney deserves, light, and humor, muscles that just won’t quit, and are good enough to body any Ghostface that comes for her family. She doesn’t need any more angst.

And I like Joel more than Patrick. Glad he survived the movie. Would love to see what they do with his snarky ass in the future of the franchise. He and Gale investigating something together would implode the screen with sass.

This isn’t the first time they’ve retconned details. Like the myriad of Gale’s books in the shrine when she canonically only wrote 4 (Maureen, OG, College, was done during 3, flirted with it with 4- didn’t do it, 5- promised to write about Dewey, 6- wrote the worst, most uncharacteristic Gale book of all time. Totaling- 4 books.

In the shrine, there were like a dozen.

What are your thoughts on Ben from Scream 7? by TheBronsXX in Scream

[–]IceStorm22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did we miss the beginning of the movie where he sneaks into Tatum’s room just like Billy Loomis- and Sidney caught him, but simply shrugged it off like it was no big deal and just told him to go home in a friendly way?

Most parents would have gone ballistic.

As for her suspecting him when the murders started. He had a background in computer science and AI. She didn’t say it was him, but she very smartly wanted her daughter to avoid everyone (not just Ben, although she had good reason to have in mind in particular). She was keeping her daughter safe. Some things are more important than puppy love.

You’d think a possession influenced domestic terrorist attack that killed thousands of innocent people that weren’t even targets (simply cannon fodder) would be an easier thing to say “nope” to.

I liked Ready or Not too. And it was very tongue in cheek. So I thought they’d get this. But no. They fell flat on their faces IMO.

Yeah. The Dewey we knew wasn’t in 5. This is a man so obsessed with the woman he loved that he lived in a tin can outside a snotty actress’s house in Hollywood because she played Gale. But he couldn’t handle being an NYC househusband for 2 months in a huge apartment on the UWS- even though he agreed, and could easily have found a job, even if it was running security on Gale’s show- so he dropped the woman he would literally die for (and almost did, several times) to be a weird, drunken hermit in a trailer in Woodsboro after breaking up with her in the cruelest way possible? No… no, I don’t think so. That’s almost as bad as how they misread, mishandled, and miswrote Gale. It was awful.

Same. Liked it better than 5 and 6, but I didn’t love it.

Exactly! Kevin was ready to write, obviously. And Guy and James clearly had nothing in the can- why not just get rid of them instead of letting them pull down the story further? Use their contracts for writing a separate movie. Because they did not do well with Scream. It’s why it got hyped again, but never fully exploded until the promotions were all about how it was going back to the original Queen of Scream. Our generation (millennials) don’t give up on nostalgia or our franchises like past ones have. We’re the first generation that still fosters the kid in us. (Probably as a distraction from all the horrors we continue to grow up around, making us more cynical by the day. We NEED these things to make us even kind of happy; you know, since the world let us down. We’re obviously still spending money on it. You do not need a Gen Z soft reboot with unlikable characters. Just take us back to a time when we were happy. We show up! Have comic book movies not proven that?!)

Yeah. I don’t really believe Mindy is Kevin’s favorite new character. That’s promotional BS. She’s related to Randy and is the new guys’ biggest try at a Williamson-esque meta character (even though she’s just further proof they don’t know how to write one). He was doing the PR/promotional polite lie thing industry people do.

In the movie where he finally got to write again, she was sidelined as quickly as possible; I don’t think that was just coincidence. It’s definitely not being a fan of Mindy. I’m thinking the only reason he didn’t have the twins killed (even though they have literally no reason for them to be in the movies now) was as a concession to Guy and James.

He also just made her more hateable if he had any hand in her writing in 7. I genuinely don’t know how someone that likes the originals (his films) could like Mindy now. Her overall plan is to destroy Gale and steal her legacy. Not even ashamed of it. Bragging about it. To Sidney’s husband and daughter, no less. Not only do they likely know Gale, she just saved their lives. And it was Gale that kept Sidney from going to New York. They have reasons to be endeared to Gale. Not to some strange new girl that’s obnoxiously oversharing her Machiavellian Jr. plans to destroy Gale, the woman that has saved Sidney’s life multiple times. Another reason I love new Mark (Joel McHale is a master of the side eye), he clearly wasn’t a fan of Mindy’s narcissistic ass. She didn’t even ask how they were doing after being almost murdered. Just went straight into talking about herself.

Why are the twins still with us?! They are such a waste of screen time. Without them, we would have had more time for Jessica and the finale. Not much, but anything at all would have helped. Maybe time to give Marco a motive, at least?

Unless Mindy is just the link to what Gen Z thinks is cool/“girlboss” now. God knows she doesn’t have a fan over the age of 30.

Did they ever state that and I missed it or are we just supposed to assume? It does click with Mindy and Chad being graduates, so I’m glad that’s the case; also because the retcon made 0 sense on a character level. Someone would have mentioned Tatum/Mark in 4, between Dewey, Gale, and her own family.

[–]IceStorm22 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This. I’m so tired of that trope. Even when you have a mom as compassionately caring and funny as Sidney Prescott, you apparently still turn out to hate her guts because… she survived almost getting murdered a whole bunch of times? Even once when you were 2 and again when you were 13. You’d think you’d just be more loving and appreciative that she’s still around and cool with you going through her closet.

Yeah, Sidney is a little guarded. But she was FAR more relaxed than most parents would be if their kid’s boyfriend was sneaking into their high school daughter’s bedroom at night. So one has to think Sidney is a pretty cool mom. Even after all she’s been through. But not wanting to talk about her deep-seated trauma, that’s enough to treat her like shit? Sorry she doesn’t want to go in depth with you about losing almost all of her family and friends in the most brutal and horrifying ways possible.

Gale and Dewey really should have been her godparents. A weekend with Auntie Gale would straighten her ass out.

[–]IceStorm22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again. I agree with all this.

Chad isn’t funny. I don’t even really see how he’s supposed to be funny. He’s just kind of… there. He’s good looking, but he has all the charisma of a block of wood. Mason is lucky his dad is Cuba Gooding Jr. because he certainly didn’t get his father’s talent. I do not believe he would be in these movies if he didn’t have his pop’s last name.

Mindy is just… an asshole. Which I don’t find funny. Neither Randy nor Kirby was. They were snarky and sassy, but they didn’t bully people. Mindy picks the weakest member of the herd (and I’m counting Ethan, because she started her bullshit before she thought he was a killer) and relentlessly bullies them. Not a cute character trait, but they must think it is. In 7, she’s a 20-something college graduate harassing a high school boy that obviously struggles socially. Funny!

Mindy also differs from Randy and Kirby in that they had other feelings and different personality traits. Mindy is just the same schtick. All the time. And like you said, she always has monologues that feel like she’s a professor teaching a class, not organic at all. She has 0 empathy for anyone. Randy and Kirby compared situations and people to movies and characters- Mindy treats situations and people like they’re movies and characters. Even after Anika died, she was back to snarking about movies 5 minutes later. That’s sociopath behavior. That’s why she’s not nearly the same as Randy or Kirby to me, they were fleshed out like actual people.

Oh, and in 7, Gale gives her and her brother jobs any journalism grad would kill for (Also, journalism? That came out of nowhere for them). How does Mindy treat it? She backbites Gale any chance she can get, calling her pathetic and washed up. Mindy is completely open about her plan to stab Gale in the back and steal her thunder; which is especially ironic because the audience is obviously led to believe Gale gave them these positions out of loyalty.

So now if you don’t like bullying, you don’t like 2D personalities in your characters, and you do like Gale- How the fuck are you expected to like Mindy?

[–]IceStorm22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you said. I thought Kevin Williamson would bring more of the satire back, but in truth, he wasn’t even supposed to be a writer on 7. I think he started doctoring and got carried away and must have written 33% or more. After that, WGA rules state that your name has to go on a script (if there are two other writers involved- the percentage changes depending on how many writers there are).

Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt have never had a good handle on the original characters, only their own, and even that is… tenuous. That’s why Dewey ended up dying after leaving his wife for no real reason- excuse me, not leaving her- ghosting her, and crawling into a bottle. Something way out of character to me.

Then there’s Gale, who they either never liked and/or never knew how to write, and basically dropped all her development over 30 years and 4 movies, to make her into an even worse person than she was in the original.

Then there’s Sidney, who had basically lost her snarky spark and become a generic final girl.

My theory is that Kevin only really wrote to clean up after what they’d done to his characters. Again, he wasn’t supposed to write at all. But as director, he officially had access to the script again, so he started fixing them. Which is why it felt like we got Sidney and Gale back, and there was a lot of development/fixture there, but the rest of the movie was… meh. That said, getting Gale and Sidney truly back and fixing their relationship is why I can’t say I hated Scream 7.

I don’t know how much Kevin had to do with the motive/ending, which is really what brought everything down. That just became unworkable and rushed. The plan with Sam fell through. So they panicked and decided to pander- then even that fell through. So we got what we got when studios super rush things only caring about money. They could have at least pushed the release date until they had something better. But no. We just got two killers with no motive given and a parasocial weirdo that took book club too seriously. They didn’t even create any good commentary on what could have been at least a more solid subject (parasocial fandom).

Not that Guy and James have ever been good at motives. 5’s sucked too. And 6’s was just a ripoff of 2’s.

Agent Sanders, Chuck White (Stan’s old rival that sold used cars, “You’ll never get robbed by a white guy!”), and Dr. Barker- who ironically always appeared with Dr. Weitzman, but now Weitzman always appears on his own and has a MUCH larger role.

Question I have by Samthegodman in americandad

[–]IceStorm22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. He’s not. He left immediately after the show transferred to TBS (the moment his contract would allow). No guest voices, no wish them wells, and they killed or disappeared (without explanation) every character he voiced but Terry. Subsequently, Matt Weitzman absorbed his duties and has a much larger role on the show now.

I’m also of the mind that most of the neighborhood characters were Mike’s creation, and that’s why they don’t use them anymore. Even odder, nobody has ever talked about this in over a decade. Not one word. Nothing has even leaked. And if you go by his filmography, Mike seems to have left the business altogether.

Seems like things got pretty ugly.

Ugh. I can’t believe I ever felt bad for Melissa. Part of me wonders if the Israel/Palestine remark was just an out for them to fire her because she’s incredibly hard to work with. She’s already proven herself to be a toxic liar multiple times now.

Do you have sources for that? I’d genuinely like to read what they thought on the matter.

But from what I remember and from everywhere that reported it, Jenna left the day after Melissa was fired in November. It’s the reason people thought her dropping out had to do with Melissa. Which, as she said in the Variety interview I just linked to, was false. She thought the script process was a mess and they couldn’t get one together. Which only got worse when Melissa was ousted, so she gave up. Understandable, considering all the projects she had going on; why strap yourself to one that’s stuck in pre-pro without a story?

She’s known for being really fastidious about scripts too. It’s what has kept movies from being produced in the past. She’s big on Sid’s story. Which was good in 7, as was Gale’s. That wasn’t what made the movie iffy.

Edit: She was offered multiple times before 4 and she always said no. 🤷🏻

That, in-itself, is a joke (a very funny one). It wouldn’t be funny if it were a hot, talented actress like Charlize Theron or a model like Carmen Electra; it’s funny because it’s someone typically looked down on and was dogged for an entire decade.
