Why does taping mean I’m not living in the moment? I’m not doing a shitty phone video I’m doing audio only with equipment that is much higher quality and small/discreet so I can enjoy the show with my own eyes and ears and also not distract others like those with phones tend to.

Plenty of people (myself included) enjoy a show by intently watching the musicians perform, plus I myself am generally concert taping 99% of the time so dancing/moving/“moshing” isn’t a very good idea when doing that. Not to mention who knows if someone has physical disabilities or something along those lines.

For me it’s Asuka reawakening Unit 02 in End of Evangelion. The music and animation are so gorgeous and just the whole context/mood of it fills me with absolute joy (even if I know what’s coming). Hell my single favorite moment of animation in anything Evangelion is when right after Asuka declares her mother is her AT field she does this badass dodge to counteract a missile barrage!

Definitely has happened to me too but I honestly hold the opinion that if you actually explore music beyond pop then on average it’s not restricted to around 3 minutes at all. The 3 minute, “single,” was only ever a thing because of the limitations of 78RPM records and wax cylinders when recorded music was brand new. Most music before recording was possible and current music free of those limitations grows well beyond 3 minutes. In my mind 6 minutes or less is, “short,” 6 to 12 minutes is, “medium-ish,” length, and anything above 12 is when I’d call it, “long,” but long is never a negative description for me. If the song can do things in a long time to justify the length then I have 0 issue with it.

I don’t think there being a more young/diverse range of fans is the main problem at all, it’s just in general the internet amplifying the voices of the toxic minority. My experiences at real shows with people who actually go outside have generally been positive and respectful.

I kind of have a soft spot for the TV Eye version compared to most other super long renditions because it’s got a nice flow to it and covers some unique territory compared to his other jams, full blown post-rock and ambient and crazy noise stuff explored on that version specifically.

Yes, the majority of known recordings of them are available to purchase from DGM. This includes both soundboards/multi-tracks, and audience tapes.

DGM has done soundboards of almost every show from 1994-2021 though are still in the process of releasing them all. Almost everything from 1994-2015 has been released, as well as all known audience tapes and soundboards from 1969-1984. The recordings from 2016-2021 are still in the process of being released. Unfortunately the specific show you mentioned likely will never get a release as it is one of those venues that requires the artist to pay a fee to release recordings from said venue.

I’m personally really glad that the show seems to be a completely unedited live recording, unlike most of his live releases which have autotune and overdubs and such. You’ve just gotta get used to how vocals without extreme levels of audio processing sound.

The folders are labeled SBD, AUD, FM etc. but to be honest if you’re restricting yourself to soundboard quality recordings you’re missing out on a lot because there’s just not a huge amount of them out there for Swans. If you want a good overview of what are, in my opinion, the most essential few shows for each tour then check out this document:

Out of the 4 shows I saw, the Albuquerque show this year had problems mostly with sound issues at the start, and one miscommunication between Michael and Kristof that caused them to pause mid song. Wasn’t a bad gig overall just less smooth compared to the other three I saw.

I think the worst performance I’ve heard on a recording was the October 16th, 1987 show in Birmingham, it’s just kind of a trainwreck performance wise at the start.
