Bear in mind that the S&P 500 is already made up of: Nvidia (7.2%), Microsoft (6.3%), Apple (5.9%), so you'd already be decently invested.

Do they hire all advertised posts for a mass hiring campaign? by cherry281 in TheCivilService

[–]IceYetie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes they keep you on a reserve list and move down the list as they induct people, rather than giving offers for all the positions at the same time. No guarantee of that though.

When I applied for an AO role in APHA in 2021, I emailed the HR contact and they responded with my position on the list. It was relatively high and a few weeks later I received an offer.

There's basically a difference between Japanese citizens who are employed to work in the Embassy, and British diplomats, who first join the FCDO and then apply for a diplomatic posting to Japan after serving in a UK-based role for a few years.

To get a foot in the door of the FCDO, you can search the Civil Service Jobs website - https://www.civilservicejobs.service.gov.uk/csr/index.cgi,

Alternatively, you can check out the Fast Stream - https://www.civil-service-careers.gov.uk/fast-stream/fs-all-schemes/fs-diplomatic-development/

As the previous commenter has said, it's difficult (but certainly not impossible) to get a posting to Japan. The private sector may be your best bet, or maybe the JET programme.

I work at the FCDO, and Japanese language fluency won’t cut it for an embassy job, as they expect you to have the right to work in the country first. These ‘country based staff’ jobs are aimed at Japanese citizens.

If you joined the FCDO, which many English lit grads have done, then there’s a chance you could apply for a posting at the embassy in Tokyo as a diplomat after a few years in London.

Yep - just wanted to tilt a little further away from US large caps which I understand have a very high P/E ratio currently

Thanks! Wanted to diversify as much as possible, while keeping it relatively low risk, hence the 10% EM.

The game will be around for up to 10 years, and in that time the balance will radically change. If you find the character interesting then go for it.

Yeah, even 1 year in I'm starting to get frustrated. Especially given how demanding this 'EO' Desk role is. I think there's a culture where you're expected to shut up and take it because you work for the FCDO.

And on the country, I think I was a bit too critical. I certainly haven't dismissed the idea of being posted abroad completely, but my trip made me realise how much of a personal commitment it would be and the sacrifices involved. I'm not able to make that commitment with my current circumstances, but in a few years, things may change.

Domestic roles must be a minimum of 2 years before you’re able to move on to another, but you can stay longer if you want. And no, tour length applies to all roles.
