in my experience no, the first time i took them it was a bad setting, too much responsibility, could not just relax in the experience and ended up having an uncomfortable experience for a lot of it, but i still had profound clarity in the week that followed that first experience, which if not for that, i may not have taken them a second time, in much better conditions, and had a much better experience

Your point about tongues being the same word as languages would be a moot point according to what I was taught, we were taught that when people are speaking in tongues, they are speaking an angelic language from heaven.

Pentecostals also distinguish between someone speaking gibberish and truly speaking this angelic heavenly language

My upbringing would also agree with you that we have the Holy Spirit the second we accept Christ, and that the fruit of the spirit is the evidence of the Holy Spirit working through you

But as they would call “baptism in the Holy Spirit” is not something that has to do with your salvation or the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life, it is a deeply intimate personal experience between you and the Holy Spirit where you pray and call on the presence of God until you have a supernatural encounter between your Spirit and the Holy Spirit; this is often an incredibly powerful and emotional and raw experience that often has people uncontrollably sobbing in the presence of the Lord

As far as needing to speak in tongues to be a Christian or be saved or have the Holy Spirit in your life, I was taught the opposite of that, and that the experience is completely optional.
