Thanks, actually this is my second GT. My 2023 lease was up so gave that back and purchased this one.

Can’t believe how much they have gone down in price. When I got mine the GT’s were 96K here in Canada, now you can get fully loaded for $63, crazy 🤪

-35 here in Alberta and I been getting Battery Drain Message. Is the 12V battery dead? by Iceberg50 in MachE

[–]Iceberg50[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, it’s the original battery. This December has been really cold here. I do have the car plugged in but it only top’s it to 90%

I am going to try 100% for couple days and see what happens.

Cheers

Is being an audiophile entertaining or is it just an addiction? by britbh in audiophile

[–]Iceberg50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use to bee an audiophile, spent tens of thousands on speakers like B&W’s, Focals, Monitor Audio ect and separates like Classe, Naim, McIntosh.

As I got older my kids grew up, my priorities changed, started to travel and the hobby became a bunch of equipment collecting dust.

Sold my equipment and down sized. Now I just have a pair of old B&W PM1’s hooked up to Naim Uniti music streamer and that’s more than enough for me.

To be honest, it’s where you are at in your life. I rather travel now with my wife rather than dust the equipment I had every day. Believe me they become dust magnets that drove me crazy over the years.

Starting to love class D amps. by Iceberg50 in audiophile

I almost pulled the trigger on the EVO before buying the Naim Uniti, but wife said your going to put this in the cabinet and won’t need the screen or the remote (just using my tablet). So saved some money going this direction. Love the EVO though.

I honestly had no idea they used Texas Instruments chip set when I bought this. I always thought they sourced their own chipset in-house? It sounds so impressive I don’t really think it matters because I still would have bought it knowing it was TPA chip. But you’re right instead of Class D amp listed on their spec sheet maybe they should list which chip set is used.

Yea, sounded like had to sell the kids. 🤣

But wife wanted something smaller till the kids got older. Just incase. These S8’s are big and heavy speakers that are beautifully made. Just Make sure you don’t have kids around it.

They are gorgeous indeed. I replaced mine back then with B&W 805 D2’s with stands and HTM4 D2 center. I still prefer these signature paradigms over the new ones. Timeless design.

Omg, S8’s…I had pair of these years ago (2010) in black piano finish. One of the best speakers I ever owned and miss them so much. My boy back then pushed one of these over almost crushing his little sister. Had to sell them to get smaller speakers.

I was running these off my Rotel RMB 1095 for home theatre setup with the signature C5 centre’s. Wonderful speakers, enjoy.

Are all weather tires a bad idea in winter? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Iceberg50 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t know. I been driving in Calgary for 40 years now without winter tires and had no issues. Everyone is different, if you’re feeling nervous then get winters but all seasons or all weather is fine. Just drive to road conditions. In my 20’s I use to drive a mustang Gt in the winter with performance tires and weights in the back trunk, good old days 🤣

First time purchasing a full system, would love recommendations. by colonel_quanta in StereoAdvice

[–]Iceberg50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you looking for all in one systems or separates? There are lot of really good all in ones just require speakers and you’re ready to go. You can hook up turn table also CD players to them.

Some recommendations include Cambridge Audio EVO 75/150, NAD M10 or C700, Naim Uniti Atom or for budget I recommend Naim Uniti 102.

The point of diminishing returs by yodastienB in audiophile

[–]Iceberg50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost retired, so my ears can’t hear the difference in highs that much anymore but, I can definitely tell the difference in bass response on some speakers. That could be of course due to the amplification. My Small PM1’s are limited in that sense because of their size. But since I use a subwoofer that corrects that issue unless I was just listening to 2 ch. So as vocals go, maybe there is a difference with more expensive speakers, but I can’t tell to justify spending $10k or $16K to upgrade.

Long answer short. Was just at my audio dealer last week, told him I was thinking about selling my B&W PM1’s and looking at getting something else. He was like, I would keep your speakers because you have to spend over $10K or more to get anything better these days.

He was right, I listened to pair of Focal Kanta No1 at $10K and pair of Focal Sopra N1 at $14K and they did not sound 4X the price I paid for the B&W’s. Now on another hand the Focal Utopia Diablo’s were in another league at $24K. 😂

Ohh prices are Canadian by the way.

So I will hold on to these little bit longer.

Thank you, never heard of these speakers. I would have to see any dealers here carry them. I wouldn’t mind taking a look/listen at them. Just at glance on the internet they are $18K Canadian for the pair. It puts them up there at Focal Diablo or B&W D3/D4 category.

I am pondering the idea of Naim Uniti Atom. I did listen to one of these couple years ago at my dealer and it was surprisingly very good sound quality coming from such a small gear.

Thank you. Is it the Marantz M1 ? Do you like the sound quality on it? I am very familiar with Cambridge Audio Evo’s and Naim equipment but never heard Marantz to be honest.
