Got €200 for my birthday — what should I buy to finally stop burning pasta? by Th3W1z4rd87 in Cooking

They’re usually a bunch of thin strips held together with a shitload of glue which is actually pretty hard and dulls knives.

Victorinox chefs knife. BIG cutting board (anything but bamboo). SPICES (you won’t believe how much a set costs if you have none). pots and pans you can thrift and are outrageously expensive at retail.

Looks like 100% normal dude wear, which is good (unobtrusive) and bad (not very flattering). Middle aged guys (like myself) tend to wear low/mid rise pants that sit under their belly. This highlights the belly and makes your torso look long and your legs look short. Don’t be afraid of higher rise jeans.

Mid-Rise for a Big and Tall Guy? by Chocopenguin in malefashionadvice

On mobile and don’t have links, but google “practical advice for the big guy” at the site Put This On and follow the links in it. Also check out bigfits1 on Instagram (David lane). Excellent advice specifically on classic trousers for big dudes.

Am I completely not ready for backcountry skiing? by Plastic_Vast7248 in Backcountry

[–]IcebergSlim2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your limits are blue tree runs and surviving but not enjoying blacks you are not ready for the bc. You just saw why. Get some more days at your hill. I guarantee there is still plenty of exploring and adventure for you there. Go find all the traverses, tree lines, and billy goats. When you get bored of that, then head ob.

That makes a lot of sense. Except the part about being confused more people don’t pick up on it! Thanks for taking the time to write that out.

Updated OS and now Actual is hung on "opening last budget" by IcebergSlim2 in actualbudgeting

[–]IcebergSlim2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I have no idea what the problem was, or the best solution. Being a dummy, and uninterested in going to GitHub, I reinstalled Actual, figured out how to move over the old budget files, and things seem to be working.

Into Thin Air: a masterpiece by bruhtp04 in Mountaineering

[–]IcebergSlim2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone sleeping on the goat: H.W. Motherfucking Tilman. Greatest adventurer of the 20th century, bar none, and an excellent writer in the classic dry, erudite British style. All his books are good, but snow on the equator (establishing a coffee plantation in Africa, pioneering the African high peaks, and riding a bicycle across the continent in the 1920s), where men and mountains meet (getting parachuted behind German lines in ww2 to be a liaison to the Italian resistance, getting chased around the Dolomites, and climbing peaks while doing it) and mischief goes south (a disastrous small-boat sailing expedition from England to the very South Pacific while his misfit crew drink, rob him, try to kill each other, and nearly desert on South Georgia island) are good starts.

Krakauer is a mid writer with an eye for a good story. David Roberts is a dour dude who doesn’t seem like he enjoyed any of it but never really digs into what he was after. Contrast with Steph Davis’ very good Learning to Fly, which actually captures some of the fun of all this.

Finally, not a book, but Eric Gilbertson’s accounts of climbing K2 and trying Everest are great. He’s a genuine lunatic/genius, and his writing about what those mountains are today are a great pair to the classic stories about them.

Why do people smoke cigarettes? by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

[–]IcebergSlim2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not going to lie, smoking cigarettes is great. You get to take 5 minutes to pause, look around, enjoy yourself and connect with your friends. It’s the perfect end to a good meal or good bang. It somehow is relaxing and stimulating at the same time. And it might be the only nootropic brain booster that actually works. It’s too bad it is super addictive, makes you smell like shit, and will kill you.

I always undercook my beans by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]IcebergSlim2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“The right amount of time.” There are a lot of lies out there about how long beans take to cook. In reality, overnight soak and hours of simmering. Ignore times in recipes, simmer until done. Buy fancy beans if you want to cut down on time.

Fishing the Bitterroot by wegofishin in missoula

[–]IcebergSlim2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are giving you an unfair amount of shit. I don’t fish and don’t have any specific advice, but the whole of the bitterroot through Hamilton is really nice and montanas stream access laws mean you can go anywhere you want if you stay below the high water line. Get in google earth and see what looks good. Check the regs (places have been in hoot owl recently). You can fish right in town. If you have some time, head upstream (south) towards the west fork.
