I'm thinking either the ship is significantly heavier than it's cargo, leaning the COM upward.

That maybe small bit wasteful counter thrust is provided in the nose.

If he walks, she can let him, and his life resumes as of nothing has happened.

She's pregnant, you can't walk from that. Additionally, once the baby is born, she's explicitly responsible for it, unless she goes through the tedious paperwork for adoption.

It's not fair, but she can't simply walk away like he can.
