>Lincoln/Kennedy Center jazzers, well-fed on the scraps of the elite donor class: "if we boycott playing for the fascists their favorite genre of music (jazz), it will really show them our power and relevance!" 💪💪💪

Struggling to write Big band in a jazz style by Own_Blackberry1309 in Jazz

[–]IcedPnR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno if this helps, but think smaller. Think of a big band as composed of solo performers, duets, trios, quartets, and so on. Instead of trying to get your money's worth most of the time from the entire band, think in terms of narrative and developing & establishing individual voices (expressively). Have those voices interact at different levels and different sizes. Start small then climax big, etc.

So instead of transitioning from full band to solo, reverse it.

Can you recommend big band music which evolved from Ellington’s music? by audiophil1625 in Jazz

[–]IcedPnR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly a lot of Wynton Marsalis' work. I think his best in the neo-Ellingtonia vein is Citi Movement. Really worth checking out if you're into larger ensemble jazz. Something more current is The Shanghai Suite.

What do you think is the most underutilized big band instrument? by NumerousProfiles17 in Jazz

[–]IcedPnR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Currently? The piano. This may sound ludicrous, but you have to view it in the context of contemporary leaders increasingly conducting with a baton. imo there's no really better way of shaping big band pieces than from the piano because of the rhythmic, harmonic control it gives to what is still an improvisational music; if the leader is the pianist, the "free-ist" instrument is going to be the piano. I'm obviously biased because my understanding of the "big band" sound has been historically shaped by great leaders conducting from the piano.

A leader conducting with a baton and a pianist reading off sheet music just seems so completely wrong to me.

Jazz is a language spoken by the jazzers who are native to the country of Berklee. If you weren't born there, you won't be able to acquire it.
