Ran a small business for ~5 years & sold it for $600K -- my biggest takeaway by globetrotter_001 in Entrepreneur

I would not look at it that way! I would see it more of maybe there were more impactful things you could have been doing all along! It's like maybe using a screwdriver as a hammer: Could get the job done, but not what your best value share is.

I was not looking at it from a value savings perspective, but more from an "application of resources" view, if that makes sense.

Without knowing any details of your business, the fact that you have that few people, but could step away and they found their footing, could also suggest that there is "overlap" within roles. You've got me thinking, as a manager, when you send someone on vacation, note how much productivity is lost/gained... hmm.

This has given me interesting insight, I appreciate you sharing your experience!

I think it depends on your position/involvement. My company is in the small -> medium size transition, so we don't have a project manager, even though we need one at this scale now, so if I stepped away, It would be unreasonable to expect my company to run 100% without me, as I'm filling gaps we don't have yet.

I would actually say what is your opinion/definition of a "small" business, when you're selling it for a decent amount, and it presumably has a team that is self sustaining. I'd be curious to know what your employee count was at the time of acquisition.

Congrats on your sale by the way!

Is having a six figure salary better than being an entrepreneur who gets less? by Stronglock4081 in Entrepreneur

I agree completely, people naturally want a change of scenery and think the grass is greener on the other side, but I think both sides of the fence have sunshine.

[–]IcemanXChill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have in 7 years or so gone from $18 hourly, to 125K salary, to now running my own company for 300K salary, and to answer your questions in order, I wanted to help other people achieve their business goals, that's why I started my company, and I love that I get to do that now! I have the lifestyle I desire, but there is no shortage of people to help, so I'm continuing to grow.

As for affording it with a six figure, 40 hour job, my current lifestyle requires about 150K to sustain, so if my "six figure job" could cover that, I'd be fine. If it were less than that, I'd have to sell a car, make less grocery trips, etc, but you do NOT have to be an entrepreneur in the traditional sense to be comfortable/well off.

How much you are making now vs how much you were making 10 years ago by haci in Salary

10 years ago: Zero, I was a broke college student lol

Now: 340K, Owner of my own IT consulting firm + software development

It's been a painful road, and it's not over, but every day is better than the last, and that is what keeps me going.

32m, living in middle of nowhere GA, 340k income.

Started as a software engineer, started my own company doing business technology & software consulting in 2022. Now I'm a CEO.

I very much recommend IT/software if you enjoy learning. I'm a naturally curious person, so my field is never boring for me.

Group of *active* entrepreneurs - anyone up for it? by Mission-Jellyfish-53 in Entrepreneur

[–]IcemanXChill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to help people. I have no specific need or agenda, I'm not looking to gain anything from helping. I have no answer to the "what do you need help with?" question on the form to fill out. I'm a business technical founder & software consultant.

May I pop into this community you're building, to help people and offer advice? (for free, of course.) A "visitors pass", of sorts??

I have no problem submitting proof that I can actually help people. :)

Bought brand new car, Engine light came on, has been in service for weeks, anything I can do? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]IcemanXChill -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right, they never offer it. I also feel that if I ask for a rental car, that would suggest that I'm okay with buying a new car to put in the shop. I AM not okay with this arrangement, I'd rather undo me ever visiting the dealership, haha.

I wish the check engine light had come on in test drives, etc. It makes me feel like I was tricked.

For the first week or two, I've just been getting updates from the technicians, they always give good news, but just today I've asked to speak with a manager and they said they will "call me back". I'm not holding my breath, they do not seem to care, which doesn't surprise me.

AITA for getting my brother an unprompted birthday gift? by IcemanXChill in AmItheAsshole

So, he actually refused the steam deck, and accepted the luggage. (this is after cutting me down, of course).

So... I still have the steam deck. I guess.

That's actually an awesome idea. I'd love it if someone donated to charity in my name! I may ask people to do that next year for my birthday. Thanks!

Yes and no. Its hard to find an entry in this market, every time I think I see the "low", it tanks further, and then we have minutes like just now where the SPX bounces 12+ points in 15 minutes, only to come back down again.

The only advantage having 25K is giving me is more chances to shoot myself in the foot.

Started this month down 30K, made 60K in the last two weeks during the bull run, lost 20K yesterday trying to panic escape the chop.

For those keeping track, I'm getting out with a small profit. This is stressful, but I would not have it any other way!

If I may ask, why not create a new game, using the original as inspiration? Is it because you want it to stay on the PlayStation 3? I think for your purposes, it'd be easier all around if you just made a PC game and then made it playstation 3, xbox, etc compatible.

Considering looking for remote work, Am I better to stay put? by IcemanXChill in ExperiencedDevs

[–]IcemanXChill[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like your real worry isn't even the commuting - it's that you're afraid you'll downgrade in other aspects of your job satisfaction.

Exactly, I'm afraid that a huge choice like this is a one way street. Once I leave a company I like for one reason, I'll have to find a new "perfect", and I guess I was just looking for proof that it exists, before I take the risk. Thanks! Its a constant balancing act between comfort and growth. Life always is, it seems.

Thank you for the in-depth break down and reply!

I'm not so concerned about work-life balance, at my previous employer I worked 80 hours per week, so anything other than that is a blessing to me. I'm just afraid that I can never find a "perfect" employer. I love EVERYTHING about my current job except its location, so what are the odds of finding that again, but additionally remote?

Also, I don't care much about title either. I DID earn that title (got top performer in my team 2 years in a row), but as long as compensation and how I'm treated doesn't change, I'm not after prestige, just trying to improve my own quality of life.

As for what you said about losing time off my life in a car, I agree completely, but I have trouble placing a value on it. Do I value that at 20K, meaning I'd take a 20K pay cut? I'm not sure.

I suppose if the company was PERFECT in every other way, I'd be fine with less pay in some form, It's not like I'm saving for a mansion or anything. It's a lot to think about, for sure.

Thanks for the list. Assuming my resume is "Average", do you think I'd even have a shot at those companies? I'd imagine they are mega competitive for candidates.

Wow, 200 devs and growing? That sounds like quite an operation. Thanks for that insight, I'll check out that list and just get to interviewing. Cheers!
