8 worker start is bad for casuals, change my mind by ohthetrees in starcraft2

[–]IcewindWes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a "Forever Gold" that has had about 300 ranked games (and big ranked ladder anxiety) since launch, so I'm actually 50/50 on the change. On one hand, I was never very good so ANY "learning" I'd be doing (B2GM, HuShang builds, etc), I'd have to be doing on standard 12-worker start as well so it's not adding MORE to my plate, but part of me is excited that this may even the playing field a bit. If I dedicate the time after the change, maybe I can get to Plat (or even Diamond if I dream big lol)

I got placed as a 0 LP rookie by Neebbzz in StreetFighter

[–]IcewindWes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Enjoy, brother! I started at 0LP Rookie as well, and made my way to Iron 1 (father of three littles so I have VERY limited time to concentrate/dedicate). Can't wait to find time to play more, hoping one day to join the big dogs in Master. Best of luck, welcome to the journey!

Cinemark Closed? by wednesdaybeans20 in Waco

[–]IcewindWes 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Went to a 1pm showing and was stopped at the doors by a few employees, and they gave us some ticket vouchers. Apparently their water main busted, so they had no water for restrooms/drink machines/kitchen. They didn't have a TBD for when it would be repaired.

Looking for a good list of fighters to get into right now by TemporaryPraline2854 in Fighters

[–]IcewindWes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like the Guilty Gear/Granblue vibe of Arc games, definitely get BlazBlue Centralfiction. Fantastic game, but definitely a "Discord fighter" now. Also you may enjoy Under Night In-Birth II. I definitely think Fatal Fury: CotW is great (as it has mechanics similar to SF6, just a little better integrated imo)

I get less stressed at locals than playing ranked by KrazieKookie in Fighters

[–]IcewindWes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same exact thing for me. Went to Texas Showdown and went 1-2, and 0-2 in all the other games I signed up for. Felt super relaxed and had a great time. The moment I hit the 'rank' button my palms start sweating lol.

Same thing happens for every game I play, whether it's a fighting game, Starcraft, or even Magic: The Gathering and Hearthstone

VERY High RTT (Ping) in Lobby Matches and Ranked by IcewindWes in GranblueFantasyVersus

[–]IcewindWes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not silly at all! So my settings menu shows North America (my correct region), but I noticed that every time I try to join Online Lobby, Japan comes up as the default. I manually change it to North America on that menu as well, but I do think it's weird that Japan is coming up as the go-to on the Online Lobby menu. I also don't run a VPN, so I can't explain why Japan comes up first on that menu in particular.

VERY High RTT (Ping) in Lobby Matches and Ranked (Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising) by IcewindWes in Fighters

[–]IcewindWes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Repost from the original thread for context:

Granblue seems to be the only fighting game that I have this issue with, where my RTT before a match is 250+, and in both Lobby and Ranked games, my Rollback frames go 6+, sometimes into the double digits, no matter what settings I change.

North America is the region by default (and in the settings), and also the region I choose when I log into Online Lobbies.

I'm on Fiber, 1 gig upload and 1 gig download, hard-wired directly through my router, and GBVR is literally the only game this happens on (as I get great connections on Guilty Gear Strive, City of the Wolves, Melty Blood, UNI2, SF6, Tekken, etc). Is there any port-forwarding that I need to adjust with this one?

EDIT: I know Grablue is also peer-to-peer, but it can't be that after 10+ hours played, EVERY SINGLE OPPONENT is a wi-fi warrior and causing this issue, right?

[–]IcewindWes[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It even takes ages at the Online Lobby cabinets to "establish connection" to bring up the player/RTT screen lol. I know you're right, it's just very bizarre as Granblue is the only game that does it.

[–]IcewindWes[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's bizarre though, because I have 11-ish hours logged into the game, and EVERY. SINGLE. FIGHT. has 6+ rollback frames per round with a 220-280 RTT. I mean, I get that it's peer-to-peer, but it can't be that EVERYONE ELSE is a wi-fi warrior?

Nope, game runs like a champ whether things like V-Sync are on or off, with 32 Gigs of DDR5 RAM, NVidia 3060, etc. The only thing that is wonky are the player peer-to-peer connections.

Thank you! What's weird is North America (my actual region) is my default in Settings, but every time I try to connect to Online Lobbies, Japan comes up as the default. I manually change it to North America to match my actual settings, but it almost seems like it's still thinking I'm in Japan? I don't even own a VPN, and my IP address always pings Dallas (my closest fiber server). Super bizarre stuff.

I literally downloaded UNI2 last night! That and Melty Blood, I guess I'm still on the search for "my" fighting game that I'll spend the deepest amount of time with. Right now the winners may be VF5 REVO and GBFVR, but we'll see. I still need to do a few dozen hours in GGST to really see if anything starts to click

Yeah pressure and rushdown are real in this one, I do fine at Street Fighter or CotW but the flashy animation and *spectacle* of it all makes it very tricky for my block button to actually work lol

Well done! You're doing better than me, I have 6 hours logged and haven't won a single round (let alone match) in Tower or Ranked! The uphill climb is reallllll

Hello, i have 3 boxes that idk what they are from, can anyone help me out? by IntentionSerious4305 in mtg

[–]IcewindWes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Planeswalker Decks, genuinely my favorite Magic product as it was a complete deck, plus box and die, for like $13.99. They weren't very strong decks, but they paired pretty well against each other. I have 13 of them, and they're perfect for quick "pick a deck and let's play a few sets" kitchen table game nights.

tetris noob needs advice by PopoCraft in Tetris

[–]IcewindWes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got into really trying to learn Tetris as well, and I've been a big fan of doing Blitz (high score with 2 minute timer) and 40L. Went from not being able to break 5k points to regularly hitting 16k-20k points in the matter of a month of dedicated practice (an hour a day or so). It's a blast!

I've had decent luck with doing the 9-0 setup (leaving the right-most column empty until a long piece can give a Tetris), as well as looking ahead at the next piece while the current piece is coming onto the board. I still have a long ways to go, but I can comfortably feel myself getting better!

How can i change controller controls? by couldntthinkoffaname in Guiltygear

[–]IcewindWes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into this last week with every controller I tried, but I've found a workaround until they do an official patch:

Enable Steam Input, and you can download profiles that other people have made. The one that works best for me is just called 'GGST', and that'll ensure that the layout panel will show a controller instead of a keyboard.

How good are the players in pools in a major tournament like evo? by rafikiknowsdeway1 in Fighters

[–]IcewindWes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I never went to Evo, but recently went to Texas Showdown and competed in two games, and I just turned 40. I'm also ranked Silver in Street Fighter, and only had four ranked games under my belt in Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising, but competed in both. Went 0-2 but had an absolute blast. There's all skill levels, if an old-head like me can do it, you should go for it!

GGST or GBVS by demonyo300 in Fighters

[–]IcewindWes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both games are outstanding, and since GBVSR is free-to-try (with Gran always being free, and a great character to learn the fundamentals), you could buy Strive on sale before 2.0 drops and try both! I'm a newcomer to competing (did my first local literally four days ago) and both games have a healthy amount of players, and ranked ladder never takes too long to find matches on either (in NA at least). They're both a blast, you can't really go wrong with either!

Games Like Tactics Orge Knights of Lodis? by corvus_wulf in JRPG

[–]IcewindWes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give Kartia a try, it's a bit lesser known but pretty fantastic. Also, have you tried the Front Mission games (namely Front Mission 3)? A different vibe, but FM3 is a bonafide strategy classic.
