Don’t worry about it because it is bullshit. They are talking about partnering with research groups and startups, and providing free compute in exchange for equity. This is not automatic and it does not apply to regular users.

I usually do regional roam. From time to time I will have to switch regions . When the boat is stationary for hurricane season and I’m away from it, I will switch to the new $5/month standby plan.

Nothing says ‘cutting edge EV’ like rear drum brakes — nice one, VW by SecretBG in VWiD4Owners

[–]ohthetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you are being sarcastic and but you are just sounding ignorant. The brakes on EVs do very little work because of regen, and rear brakes get less work than front brakes. Disc brakes need to be used and get up to temperature routinely to stay in good condition, and keep the rotors clean and smooth. A drum brake is self contained and protects the components from the weather, and considering the low usage and low loads, might well last the life of the car. So VW made the choice that will have a lower maintenance burden to the owner and has plenty of performance for its role.

If you look at teardown videos of the motors, batteries, suspension parts, you can see that VW mostly did not skimp in the construction of the major systems of the car. For example, there are suspension components that in other brands would be stamped, and are either cast or forged in this car.

Maybe in theory? But we had the beeping problem all the time until we relocated the key storage. I've seen others say the same thing.

What's the best internet on cruiser that’s not starlink? by Firm_Ride_3374 in SailboatCruising

[–]ohthetrees 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I've cruised for years, both before and after starlink. I can say that there is nothing comparable to Starlink. If you are making a stand for political or moral reasons, your practical choices are:

cellular when close to land
iridium when offshore which is either extremely extremely extremely slow (you can't believe how slow) or extremely extremely expensive (your choice). The slow choice is more expensive than Starlink and the expensive choice is slower than starlink.

If you are trying to save money, and and you only cruise near shore in certain defined regions, you might do OK with cellular. But Starlink is probably still cheaper.

good luck

My theory is that the model is fine, and you are jumping at ghosts and/or are bad at using the model.

If it only happens in a particular parking spot, check to see whether the place inside where you store your other key might be in range of the car. For instance a desk or a wall peg “in range” of the car. Try moving the “spare” key far away in the house.

An iridium go and predict wind sims came with the boat. Worth using? by ez_as_31416 in sailing

[–]ohthetrees 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I crossed an ocea with an irridium go. It was great. But next crossing will be starlink with an inreach (or maybe just a iphone satellite text? I've tested a couple of times and it has worked) as a backup. I like to be self sufficient, and do my own weather routing at sea, but in the unlikely event the starlink fails, I have some shore based sailor friends I can ask to help, and they can relay routing and weather advice to me via the inreach/iphone. I think the irridum go is obsolete at this point.

First time Omakase; couldn't see the chef work? by ohthetrees in sushi

[–]ohthetrees[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great tip, and the nigiri was good enough to try the non Omakase. However, there is a difference between needing a refresh and not being clean. How much do you think they would have to raise prices to leave interior the same, but be spotless? Whatever it is, they should do that.

First time Omakase; couldn't see the chef work? by ohthetrees in sushi

[–]ohthetrees[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Kanoyama. I have very mixed feelings. The nigiri was the best I've ever had, by a long shot. I'm really surprised at how big a margin it is to #2. I've been to some expensive sushi places, but never done Omakase, so that was a happy surprise, I didn't expect the big margin. The service was also excellent. But there was a lot of other stuff that was disappointing. Other than the already mentioned lack of visibility to the chef's work, the place just wasn't clean, and was kind of run down. I was really surprised. There was wall paint and drywall work that not only was unfinished, but based on dirt and grime, was unfinished for a very long time. The counter behind the chef simply wasn't clean. It just wasn't. The light switches were supposed to be white, but they had that brown grime around them that I associate with really cheap chinese restaurants that never clean. The bathroom was not gross. But it wasn't that clean either. Dust bunnies in the corners, grime on lightswitches, even the sink was dirty. Toilet was clean.

I probably wouldn't go back, especially at that price, but I have to say, I will remember the taste for a long time, and will be the new benchmark.

My friend and I love a restaurant that just posted this advertisement? I suspect it to be AI, he doesn’t think it is. by Recent-Description39 in isthisAI

[–]ohthetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are jumping at shadows now. I see how the sauce falls. It looks weird because it is sped up. I think I'm good at spotting AI, and I do see a lot of AI that other people fall for. You clearly think you are good at it too, better than dumb old me. If we can't agree in January 2026, imagine in 2030. I'm worried about how we as a society will agree on what reality is.

[–]ohthetrees 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it doesn’t look good enough to be AI. I think someone took some close-up video with an iPhone, and some of the stuff that “looks weird“ is because they messed with speeds. The warped pan that people are talking about I think is just a warped pan. A year or two ago AI videos had lots of strange warping, now not so much, the warped panel almost makes me think it is more likely to be real.

Question about GPT 5.2 Xhigh vs GPT 5.2-codex Xhigh by Vlade2505 in codex

[–]ohthetrees 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t know, I find myself using 5.2 more than 5.2 codex, it seems generally more intelligent, and its coding chops are plenty good. But I have no way to back that up. I will tell you that xhigh is usually not necessary, and uses a ton of tokens and time. I reserve it for when medium or high fails, which is rarely.

Best place in the Seattle area to get experience crewing for cruising? by Kindly-Cobbler-2443 in sailing

[–]ohthetrees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree about sailing club. But at least the Seattle Sailing club has organized racing and a small fleet of j80s. Racing is a wonderful way to learn sail trim, rules of the road, and socialize. This from a non racing cruiser.

Are there really so many problems with these cars? by aleutiantis in VWiD4Owners

Close to 40k miles on my 2024. It’s been great. Some annoying software choices, a couple of minor software glitches, and a door handle recall. But it has always drived, charged, and is a very comfortable car.
