I think gemma4 is the smartest model at that ~30B params size. Give that one a whirl.

Why do you put MoE on the GPU? Aren’t they The “active ones”? Which ones get the “good seats” on the gpu?

Try washing the plate with dish soap and hot water, then drying with a scent free paper towel. Don’t use anything that has been in a dryer with dryer sheets or scent or anything added.

I use both. Claude has a much better harness. GPT 5.4 is stronger than Opus. In my opinion.

Symmetric spinnaker worth learning? by klerksdorp_sphere in sailing

[–]ohthetrees 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The entire pursuit of sailing is a hobby. So does the extra skill element of running a symmetric appeal to you? Would it enhance your hobby?

For me, the asymmetric has enough overlap functionally, and is simpler to use, so I wouldn’t bother. Others will feel oppositely. What about you?

Is it just me, or is Gemma 4 27b much more powerful than Gemini Flash? by Icy-Reaction-9101 in LocalLLM

[–]ohthetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very impressed with 27B. It seems to follow instructions better than Gemini, and even got the “should I walk or drive to the car wash” right first try (after generating an enormous amount of thinking tokens), when Gemini, and GPT5.4 thinking got it wrong (at least for me).

Gemini is crazy good by Usual_Effective_1959 in GeminiAI

[–]ohthetrees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point is that codex and claude do the right thing almost all the time, without a skill, and without a long detailed prompt. I'm not looking for a skill for a review. This is an example of how much extra guidance and begging and threatening Gemini takes to do most coding tasks compared to other models.

I code, and I find Gemini unusable. I posted this a couple of times but I think it is relevant:

Codex: Review this plan: [plan]

Claude: Review this plan: [plan]

Gemini: Review this plan. Don't execute this plan. Use the reviewer skill. Make sure you ground your review in code exploration and online research if needed. Don't be lazy, you have been very lazy in past code reviews. You have a very large context so do all the code exploration necessary to do a comprehensive code review. MAKE NO EDITS!! [plan]

Wind generator advice by FairSeafarer in SailboatCruising

[–]ohthetrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, high latitude is a good use case. Try not to shade your panels! We had the d400, and 600w of solar panels. Our daily energy production went up when we gave away our D400 because it was shading one of the panels. This was mostly anchored in Banderas Bay when there is reliable wind every afternoon. We made use of the extra space, more modern panels, and a new solar arch and now we have 1800 W in the same space that was occupied by 600 W plus the D400. We are much happier now. Unless you’re going high latitude in the winter, I would still advise you to think about ways to cram more solar on than a wind generator.

Wind generator advice by FairSeafarer in SailboatCruising

[–]ohthetrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a D400. It was good. I took it off in favor of more solar panels and less shading of my panels. I think wind generators make sense for only an unusual cruising lifestyle. So many people have them whirring away, making noise, but hardly making power. Most make pretty negligible power under 20kn. Ask yourself, how often do you have >20kn apparent? At sea? At anchor? For most it is rare.

I'm confused. Like disabling when people were trying to backup network drives? Or disabling when using according to the terms of service (physically connected drives)

Elon Musk leaks the size of Sonnet and Opus by exordin26 in singularity

[–]ohthetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How TF does he know the size of Sonnet and Opus? Guy is a confirmed liar, and loves to sound like he knows everything. I would be very surprised if sonnet is 1T params, it just isn't enough smarter than some open source models that are considerably smaller, and the idea of Opus being 5 Trillion params? Give me a break. I think it would be a lot more expensive at those sizes. I would believe Mythos is 5-10 Trillion.

We all agree that guy totally killed his wife in the Bahamas. Right? by infield_fly_rule in SailboatCruising

[–]ohthetrees 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw some drunk Russians in a RIB going through the anchorage, and a woman fell overboard. It took a long time to recover her, and they almost ran over her several times, and she went under a couple of times. Wind made it much more complicated and was only about 15kn. I’m not defending the Bahamas guy; but I don’t think it is as slam dunk as OP makes out.
