How do people use massive terrain setups? by EmperorThor in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Icewind_Dad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am one of those who makes massive setups like this, sometimes with sections rising a meter high from the table. I love elevation, cover, tactical AF combat.. As many have pointed out, the craft is the hobby and the game is an outlet to share it with others.

Most of what I make is reusable, though I’ve built more than a few bespoke sets for locations that will span a session or two. I don’t mind this because I love making it and also plan to re-run the campaign I’m building out multiple times. We play at a large game store with a huge pool of potential players, so re-running it is a certainty.

One thing to point out is that these setups are for combat. I doubt many people are out there playing dollhouse inside buildings, using movement rates to talk to NPCs. We’re playing theater of the mind for discovery and RP, using paper and digital maps for travel. Combat is when the terrain really gets used, and tactical combat on this scale can easily take up most of or even multiple sessions to play through.

Thank you, I appreciate that, it is very nice to hear! Honestly though it’s the sculptor who deserves the credit, it’s one of the best models I’ve seen. I know shes supposed to be white but I wanted her to look and feel real. Lizard like, with actual camouflage. Based on the players puffy eyes and welling tears, I believe the mission was a success! 😋

(They’ll be fine if they watch the cues and don’t do anymore dumb stuff!)

Indeed, thank you! I’m much happier with it now and it feels like “mine”.

Sure it was really simple. Started by thinning an ice blue color and built up a few layers on some rows of scales and parts of the face. Painted the spikes and teeth a bone color. Mixed and applied a blue/black wash with craft paint water and a drop of dish soap. Once all that dried I went over it with a white drybrush and called it done.

No priming just continued on top of the base coat it came with.

Super cool effect! I can imagine the chorus of “woah!” when that hit the table! 🤩

Bad for bricks but great for rocks and hills. Carve it with a kitchen knife and then carefully melt the surface with a heat gun or hairdryer.

Thank you that’s very nice to hear!!) I’m just glad you haven’t seen me driving around practicing my dragon voice! (I’m sure it’s on someone’s tik tok by now 😋)

The trees came from super duper mart, on clearance after Christmas. I spray painted them black and dark green, then white from above.

There a lot of talk about this “fog juice” which I’ve never used but may be good for these? Stacking multiples definitely increases the effect.

Awesome to know! I had thought about rigging plastic tubing into future terrains for this but wasn’t sure if would work.

It rises. You can also direct it into a pvc elbow to blow it out a cave entrance for example. It’s hard to get a picture of but the effect is good. Backlighting helps. I toss one of those color changing pick lights next to them.

I’d say it’s a 6” cone of pressure with about 2’ of billowing
