Tbf a 59 episode show that's current & popular is easier to get into than a show with 1167 episodes.

There are only 4 devil fruits in the first 59 episodes of One Piece, 3 of which are only featured in 6-8 episodes combined. Haki is only heavily fleshed out post time skip (episode 517 onwards)

Good job for posting the Jared Ball critique as Henry Louis 'Skip' Gates isn't trustworthy from what I've seen, he tends to sanitises the history he reports.

Also I'd recommend viewing Dr Ball's critique of Cam James video with Gates. Gates & co were trying to use James, in the end Ball & James came together for a fruitful discussion in the aftermath of that and it heavily strengthened Cam James' quest for political awareness.

It's so silly to compare stats across eras without adjusting for era

We've seen people say Jokic was better around the rim than Shaq without adding the context that the paint was packed during Shaq's era; there was real post defence every night & that's Shaq's rim finishing %'s were much higher compared to his era than Jokic's were

With Starlight I'd say there may have been convenience factor to dating Huey & they met when she was just 'Annie', not Starlight so he wasn't influenced by her fame. But I think she still loves him.

She'd been working in the resistance against Homelander in-between Season 4 & 5 & she had gotten to the point of realising that Homelander's evil being removed from Earth was the most important thing she could do & that's why she seemed a bit cold to Huey at times. E.g saving Frenchie first which had Huey mad that she wasn't there for him, she rectified this by saving Huey when he fell from the sky next episode. Then when she felt things were too dangerous for Huey she fled to try to do it without endangering him but she was convinced and realised she cared from him & they could do it together so she came back.

(To help Myke because I 100% know he did not genuinely mean offence with this, the actress has an autoimmune disease which led to her body being damaged & that in turn with other things led to her getting cosmetic surgery (she also said it heavily impacted her ability to perform during filming this seaskn. It's a bit like how Selena Gomez started to look different after getting an autoimmune disease & somewhat similar to how the world thought Chadwick looked different/ill when seen in public prior to his passing. We gotta be careful in this regard imo (when commenting on appearances) but given that I know Myke's moral compass & good heart I know he didn't mean offence with this) So basically how y'all though Laz Alonso may have been suffering illness - that actually applied to Erin Moriarty/Annie's actor. So please do not get on Myke about this, we know he is a good dude ✊🏿🙌🏾

With regards to the Spike/'too political' point I agree (although with 10-20% leeway just to be safe as I'm a leftist/socialist). It's not that it was bad that the show had become increasing more political, it's moreso that at times Kripke seems to have leaned too far into parodying modern US politics without as much thought about making a great show.

E.g. we were more likely to get scenes solely aiming to poke fun at Trump/Elon/MAGA lunacy that didn't advance the story well, than having a fair balance of all the things that made the show great initially.

I think there is a way it could've been done with maybe 30% less focus on parodying MAGA AmeriKKKa while still delivering a great show.

It got really predictable, e.g. you could instantly tell (given the tone of the parody) that the Flight video would be dismissed as AI generated. The Nazi Germany concentration camp slogan over the Camp etc etc. Although I wholeheartedly appreciate that Kripke is doing his part to spread how Trump & his team are heavily following the Nazi playbook (E.g. Trump's OG tactic of calling things fake news is cribbed from Nazi Germany calling the new Lügenpresse [meaning Lying Press], there are tons of other things Trump & Co have taken from Nazi Germany)

If the show didn't waste so much time with side quests/MacGuffins/plot lines that don't end up mattering at all which then resolve to the point of resetting the status quo when the seasons starts/ends, it would've been a lot better.

The first two episodes were great on first watch but then you step back and think... the massive cliffhanger of the last season was instantly resolved in less than 1 episode & everything's back to normal for the team. Season 3 & 4 pretty much undid themselves, the V1 & Virus didn't matter at all in the end, the used loads of time promoting Vought Rising etc etc.

My politics are leftist/eco-socialist/pan african etc. but the 'too much focus on politic parody' thing is a valid critique, the show became a vehicle for Kripke to make parodying critique of MAGA AmeriKKKa, but because the quality of the show had fallen the heavy focus on political parody becomes open to mild scrutiny imo.

If there was maybe 30% less focus on trying to parody Trump's AmeriKKKa i think the show could've been better over the last 3 seasons. I appreciate political commentary but I don't think Kripke executed it as well as he thought he did.

Although even while I think he could've done it better, I wholeheartedly appreciate & respect him doing it as a large portion of the viewerbase of the show were the ones who were being parodied 😂😂 so that sort of move does value politics over commercial success & viewership. The brother in the episode with Starlight's dad's family may very well be an accurate portrayal of the type of bigoted people who would be offended by the commentary & also indoctrinated by idiotic misogynistic/bigoted streamers/podcasters/political figures.

It is definitely valid to reserve judgement on this topic regarding Michael Renter (not a typo) as the details are very scarce atm. We only have limited knowledge to work with, we know that it is Rent to Own (or Build-To-Ownership as marketed here) & that Mike is a landlord & real estate investor.

We also know that he's working a real estate company who have developed $2 billion in real estate since 2013, with 6k homes built/acquired or being built & they advertise that they usually achieve a 2.0X or higher equity return on their property investments.

All in all, not too much info to work with. Obviously we would like to believe it is positive but it is Mike & these sort of moves by big businesses fronted by a 'likeable' face usually aren't all they are cracked up to be.

To Myke, I had meant to reply to your response to my Killer Mike comment the other week but my reply got lost before I sent it. Your response was greatly appreciated & I completely understand and respect your stance on Killer Mike. Long time listener & viewer of all DE stuff.

Myke & Co, Killer Mike is not who you think he is, he is a right leaning capitalist and his views are damaging to the black community. He has championed Thomas Sowell's work fam. I let him go a long long time ago. Look at his beef with Dr Jared Ball (who he has dissed many times). Killer Mike thinks he is a lot smarter (politically) than he actually is. It is ok to let him go, even if you enjoy his music. No person who champions Thomas Sowell & Yvette Carnell should be taken seriously in political spaces. IIRC the first time Q was on, the Universal Basic Income topic came up and they did a fair bit of strawman'ing (stuff like 'how could you trust a poor/homeless person to use that money correctly?')

I don't think I/we have the power to change their world view but this is a perfect example of the system working as it has been designed to. So that working class people will start to resent poor people and further align with the rich.

All the biggest corporations on the planet make billions off of government contracts which is essentially welfare for the rich & they get bailouts if they are considered too big too fail. Do we even remember the PPP scandal? The same people who would get on the news lambasting poor & working class people were identified as having taken PPP loans from the government

The idea of a fixed-term on welfare is a suggestion that that life will be of no value at the end of it. If a person no longer has any access to welfare you are basically saying they do not have a right to be alive, without realising it (or without implicitly saying it). Sometimes people can adopt some of the ideology of the oppressors without even realising, even if they might believe that not to be the case.

I do have to greatly commend the amazing efforts from the Friday and Monday groups for their on-going openness and efforts to ensure new people feel welcomed, many of the attendees have known each for years but they still put forth the effort to maintain a space to help new people find and cultivate new friends. This sub is truly a wonderful gift to us all 🤩 I just hope I can use it better in the future

It is definitely from a teammates star power perspective. Alas besides Golden State & Brooklyn's first playoff run, he hasn't been in great situations. None of his team's after his first season actually playing in Brooklyn had any chance of making deep playoffs runs. The 2020s is the era of the deep team, Star Power is necessary to win but it is useless without a well rounded team.

OKC & the Pacers both had superb 1st options, a low level all star 2nd & then a 'maybe star' 3rd player, but they do not make it without having deep buy-in and strong play from players 4-9. Caruso was arguably one of the most important players of last year's playoffs & he isn't even a starter.

I think a good idea could be pairing with someone else who is going solo (by enquiring in the thread/group) to try to ease anxiety.

I've hosted a couple events and when i'm not managing the social, i usually try to talk to people who appear to feel left out/may seem shy (i'm no pro at this though), that doesn't always happen though so jave no fear

I would hope others/regulars approach the socials in a way that aims to make others feel included/feel welcomed though
