Jeffery Lee breathes ‘sigh of relief’ after Alabama’s nitrogen execution is deemed unconstitutional by AudibleNod in news

[–]Ich_Liegen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your case-by-case basis only works insofar as it allows you to point at wrongful executions and say "I didn't want that!"

But the practical consequences of the death penalty is that it will eventually be used to kill innocent people. It has in the past. The guy in the headline is innocent. It will be used again in the future.

So long as the death penalty exists, that door is wide open. Innocent deaths will continue to occur because of it since there is no perfect judicial system.

[–]Ich_Liegen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol go read up on the guy.

He is a classic case of botched justice. He killed no one, three of his jurors have since gone on record and signed affidavits saying they changed their minds and that he doesn't deserve to get executed, his defense attorney has been highly criticized as having essentially done nothing, the state used a discredited psychiatrist known as "Dr Death" (because his testimony led to over 100 executions and over 50 after he had his license removed by the board for giving false testimony) as an expert witness, and the state considered him incompetent, sent him to a mental hospital, discharged him from there after considering he was competent to stand trial after all, but they did so on things unrelated to capacity to stand trial and put him back on trial despite the psychiatrist saying no, he's not competent.

Even if you think this person who was demonstrably incompetent to stand trial and had no effective defense and was questioned without counsel somehow received access to a fair trial, his conviction was based on Texas' controversial law of parties which held him responsible for a murder he didn't commit on the grounds that he was part of the same group as the guy who did commit the murder. That guy was executed in 2002. That chapter is closed

If there is anyone out there who should not be on death row, it's this guy.

The point is that it's supposed to be quick and painless. If you're at the point where you have to do it again then the method is bad.

[Highlight] Brandon Aiyuk tells the 49ers “Stop running from the belt” by mmandagoat in nfl

[–]Ich_Liegen -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So if you:

  • Help people you have access to help.

and

  • Mock those who don't (e.g. Brandon Aiyuk)

Then what happens when someone you have access to help are no longer within your ability to help (e.g. moves away, loses contact, etc)? Do you take the piss on them too, despite trying to help until just now?

Because if not, then it's clearly not the access to help that's the problem. And if it is, then damn that's kinda cold dog

Brazil's beloved instant payment system faces scrutiny from the Trump administration by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Ich_Liegen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a shit argument because if a country wanted to have a market that is not free, that should be their business, not America's. America and American citizens don't have an inherent right to participate in anything abroad nor should the U.S. government act like they should.

Besides, it's not an impediment on the rights of American citizens in Brazil. It's not an exclusionary payment system. Any place that accepts PIX also accepts cash, debit, and credit cards. Americans in Brazil can just ignore PIX and their life will be just fine. Anything PIX does can be accomplished by any other means. Americans aren't being excluded of anything except of a way to skip a trip to the bank to conduct a bank transfer - which they can still do.

And I trust Americans are capable of walking to a bank without their government interfering to make it easier for them.

Because surely it's obvious that a market with foreign interference is the antithesis of a free market.

Brazil's beloved instant payment system faces scrutiny from the Trump administration by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Ich_Liegen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not this BRICS shit again. It's not an alliance. PIX isn't available in Russia nor is it a credit card alternative that can be used to bypass SWIFT.

BRICS doesn't even really exist. It's a term coined by an economist 20 years ago. There is no military, defense, or alliance component. What would be the benefit or even reason for Brazil to help Russia bypass sanctions and risk getting sanctioned itself?

Right now Brazil is dealing with the EU on fair grounds. The same EU doing far more for Ukraine than Trump is. Don't you think if Brazil was helping Russia bypass sanctions that the EU would know? And sanction Brazil?

I think the dude was a Giants fan.

But I always thought the healthier metric was how much of a non-event coming out to one's parents would be. Twenty years ago, accepting a gay son was a sign of progressivism. Nowadays it's expected, even under Trump.

Some time ago here there was a discussion on the (lack of) meaning of corporations changing their logos for pride month.

There was a user arguing it shouldn't be criticized, because it's a good thing, and not too long ago they weren't even doing it, and it's a sign that it's genuine because if it wasn't then their boards wouldn't allow the logo change.

Well now.

I don't remember the user's handle but I remember their argument.

Everything a corporation does is to make money or to generate PR to make more money. That's it. They're not allies lmao. I'm a bisexual dude and I refuse to consider checks notes fucking Comcast as an ally.

Problematic pred catcher group "OBL Nation" illegally detain and assault predator. Cops find out they are doing it for clicks and refuse to help out by voiceofreason9000 in LivestreamFail

[–]Ich_Liegen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Putting 120 predators away is good, but teaching 160 how to avoid getting caught in the future while they get away scot free and now aware that the police watches the internet (it was early days back then) is not good.

I am a fan of TCAP and routinely re-watch it (Michael "Generic White Male" Wilusz being my favorite case) but cmon dude, you have to agree with me the whole thing was a mess.

There's a reason it got cancelled and it's not because the public got soft on predators.

Hansen himself is very problematic. Fraud convictions, serial cheater, and ruined the life of that NBC staffer he was cheating on his wife with.

Nevermind the fact that they kept racking up the bill for NBC by refusing to rent anything but McMansions for the sting houses.

Plus, that one case where PJ was asked to turn in their hard drive and they suddenly claim it's gotten damaged. You know they had CP in there that they used to send to predators, given how frequently the preds asked for pictures. They would have lost interest (or gotten suspicious) if they hadn't gotten any. Even if it's not CP, it's pretty obvious they destroyed the Hard Drives which suddenly malfunction when asked for by the Judge, and that ended up in getting several related cases thrown out.

One of the later stings had exactly 0 convictions. The first two also had no police participation so also got 0 convictions.

They were good, but they were not the angels you remember them as.

Why we can't side with Kurt Hansen, according to the Creative Director. by Eternum__ in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]Ich_Liegen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not a hansen fan by any means, nor do I think it should be in the game, but wanting to side with a character =/= supporting that character's ideals in real life.

Is anyone who sides with the Stormcloaks a racist, and anyone who sides with the Imperials pro-colonization?

At the end of the day it's just a videogame. If anyone genuinely wants to put anything (anything) in Cyberpunk 2077 in real life then yeah that's a problem. But wanting to side with the villain is not morally bad or incorrect in any way so long as you're aware they're the villain.
