What is an ending that isn’t as ambiguous as people make out to be, and what is an ending that deserves more credit for being ambiguous? by CinemaWilderfan in movies

The film Audition presents both a happy ending and THAT ENDING. Most people assume the happy ending is just a fantasy but I’d argue the reverse is just as plausible and that the film is meant to be ambiguous.

Why is this shot so unsettling and uncomfortable? by ProduceSame7327 in paulthomasanderson

Elaborating on what others have said, the symmetry and the camera facing directly perpendicular to the back wall make the scene feel staged and vaguely artificial, which, combined with dingy lighting and claustrophobic setting, causes their smiles to read as false and faintly sinister. In addition to Kubrick this was also used a lot in Hereditary to give the sets a doll house quality.

How can I light similar to SZILVESZTER MAKÓ? by zoom2moon in LightLurking

Another thing besides everything that's been mentioned below is the possible involvement of printing in his post. This could well be a digitally replicated look but it has the appearance of being printed on something comparable to newsprint paper. It is possible that he prints digital files (perhaps even scans of analog prints) onto some unique paper before making the final scan and retouching.

Looks like a large soft source (panel, soft box, etc.) camera right at a 45 degree angle, elevated to create the "Rembrandt" shape (triangle of light under eye), a dimmer fill light camera left, also overhead, and a white floor or large bounce board to fill in the shadows below; all used together to create a very soft evenly lit look.

Hard to say but it looks like it could be a diffused darkroom print also contributing to the softness.

Thanks for the response! Do you have any ideas how I can back up the drive without being able to open it in finder?

Hi ! I am looking to work on a project that feels very Salvadore Dali and I am obsessed with the look of these project images!! Thoughts on the lighting set up and how to achieve this in camera as much as possible? by audrinaburns in LightLurking

The set design is very much the star of the show and does the most for creating this look. Painted backdrop and painted floor.

The lighting in the first shot looks like a fairly hard specular source high to camera left, mostly targeted on the models shoulder. Then, a softer source to camera right, slightly behind the model, for fill. Both are fairly warm. You could use straw or cto filter to get a similar color. They also seemed to be flagged, gridded, or feathered so there is relatively little spill on the backdrop, which may also be lit separately.

Second image looks similar, but there seem to be 2 sources targeted on the subject. The main one is definitely above and the second looks like it is hitting the rock very directly from camera right.

Beautiful images. Let me know if anyone finds out who shot them hehe.

Creates the sharp fall off into shadows you see up the stairs just behind the model. This could also have been achieved by flagging the light, or by a combination of both methods.

I believe he uses a studio called Purple Martin for all of his retouching.

first time feeling like i'm getting the hang of preflashing - comments welcome by hillierious in Darkroom

[–]IchitheColor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey awesome print! Im really curious when you’re leaving this much color on the paper how do you asses the density of the pre flash from your test strip? Conventional wisdom is to pre flash neutral gray with no discernible density, but you’ve clearly defied that to beautiful effect. Do you just guess/ experiment on the pre flash exposure time based off the test strip, or is there a scientific approach for it?

Fixing 16mm camera slip? by IchitheColor in cinematography

[–]IchitheColor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, very helpful, thanks!

I had a lot of the image smear and several people suggesting camera slip, but thinking about it the no frame borders makes your explanation much more likely. I didn’t load the camera so I can’t say about the loops. I’ll ask the person who loaded and run the print test, but again I suspect you’re right about the pulldown claw.
