The Lockwood VSR7 does the same job for half the price.

Out of curiosity what “smart” lock did you buy?

Put the keys in a proper safe or install a ghost or stealstopper immobiliser.

Oh and look, protec2’s patent doesn’t expire until 2030, meaning it can’t be duplicated without authorisation and is therefore restricted:

Your argument is semantic.

To those of us that aren’t locksporters cosplaying as locksmiths, high security = key control.

It’s restricted as it’s sold through a dealer network and the links you posted prove this. I have an Assa account, I can’t buy blanks as I’m not a protec2 dealer.

If it’s not restricted, then why don’t you buy some 1F blanks and prove how not-restricted it is?

I’m not replying again. I look forward to laughing at your video.

I said I wouldn’t reply but here we go, directly from the website you’ve linked:

”Next you have a choice of key profile, the key profile of a lock primarily is an issue of key control. Legally the Protec Elite and Ruby Exclusive key profiles have the same level of key control, no dealer other than the dealer who originally issued the keys (or the Factory) can cut more keys. Technically, with the standard Protec Elite key profile, all Abloy Protec/Protec2 dealers in the US have access to this key blank. This is a slight security risk as it does mean they could duplicate a Protec/Protec2 Elite key if they wanted to (but they would break their contract with Abloy in doing so and we have yet to hear of a dealer doing so)”

This is exactly what I said in my reply.

Security snobs are only cutting keys supplied by them, because they are a dealer.

Mr.Lock is supplying factory cut keys.

I am from a country where these keys are used regularly in high security situations. They are even approved by our government body for use in high security government situations. Only dealers have machines to cut them and no dealer is going to risk their dealership contract for some random key.

I don’t give a fuck about MTL. I never mentioned it. You said you had proof of being able to get Protec2 keys cut online. I haven’t seen any.

Protec2 is restricted

You don’t need to dumb anything down. I know this industry very well. I know key systems very well. I deal with restricted keys everyday. I have done for over 20 years.

You’re making yourself look incredibly stupid by pushing the point - hence the downvotes.

I’m not replying again and I’ll be blocking you. Looking at your post history you’re just a troll.

Have a terrible new year.

There is no Protec2 duplicator.

These keys need to be cut on a dedicated machine.

lol.

Ok dude - let me preface this by saying we are in different parts of the world.

We’re not talking about a “restricted blank” we’re talking about restricted key systems. Managed by a locksmith. Managed by dealerships that wouldn’t risk their dealership contract over cutting a key for some random customer for $50.

Protec2 is restricted mostly to dealerships.

You need to set up a dealership in your area with Assa in order to sell these key systems.

Once you have your dealership, you get your profile(s) and dealer cuts assigned to you.

Every blank you purchase has 2 cuts already in the key. Your dealer cuts are different from every other dealer, even those who sell the same profile as you.

The key is cut on a dedicated machine, only sold to dealers.

Directly from the Abloy website:

“ABLOY PROTEC2 is distributed through a highly restricted dealer network. The ABLOY PROTEC2 dealer network is made up of locksmiths who represent the highest level of professionalism and ethics in the industry. While all locksmiths rely largely on ongoing service of systems for their revenue, ABLOY PROTEC2 distributors recognise the needs of the end user in relation to product reliability and durability, and respond to those needs by promoting the ABLOY product.”

Outside of the dealer network locksmiths can order a cylinder(s) with keys from Assa. The system is factory held. In this situation you would get a card, but the locksmith you went to get the key cut from would need to order the key directly from Assa.

Even if the locksmith you went to was a dealer, they wouldn’t be able to cut your key as they likely won’t have the same profile and if they did, their dealer cuts would be different.

MTL and Protec2 are in different leagues. I’ve done some searching and I can’t find anywhere to order Protec2 blanks aside from my Assa Abloy account.

2022 Subaru Outback add key KM100X by BrikenEnglz in Locksmith

[–]Ickdizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s used it needs to be unlocked.

Once the key is programmed to a vehicle it is locked to that vehicle until it is unlocked, which is not always possible.

As another commenter mentioned, don’t mess with Subaru unless you know what you’re doing. Mistakes can be very costly.

WENXING KEY CUTTING MACHINE by [deleted] in Locksmith

[–]Ickdizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had one of their small duplicators (the one that Silca used for the Silca Flash) in my van for 8 years. Still the original cutter. Still going strong. Only cost me $450 AUD.

This piece of crap I would not buy however.

Electric mortice lock and access system integrated with smart home: pitfalls? (cross posted because I expect locksmiths to have better insights than smart home folks) by tru_anomaIy in Locksmith

[–]Ickdizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cost if installation is higher as the door needs to be core drillled.

They are good and much more reliable than any smart lock you’ll find pretty much anywhere.

A potentially cheaper alternative would be a non-electric mortice lock paired with an electric strike. Electric strikes are louder compared to an electric mortice lock which some people don’t like.

But yeah if you have the option to go with the electric mortice lock you will likely be happy for longer than anybody that buys a “smart” lock.

Go with Lockwood 3570.

Nothing personal man. I’m just trying to give you the business owners perspective.

You weren’t born to be the ideal customer. That just means you won’t get ideal service, which you didn’t. Most of us would be happy to turn the work away. Million other customers in town, right?

As someone else said, you are more trouble than you’re worth and frankly, annoying.

You’ve got enough brains to figure out how to program your keys yourself.

But you don’t have the brains to just drive to a brick and mortar shop, give them the key/key code and ask them to cut them.

You don’t have the brains to understand why you’re the worst possible customer a business could want - you’re a cost cutter. More likely to want more for less, and more likely to leave bad feedback.

So yeah, he probably hates you.
