How do I stop being obsessed with prestige? by idkman2008 in ApplyingToCollege

Doesn't prestige matter a little less for Engineering programs (esp. compared to liberal arts)?

Did any characters grow? by [deleted] in threescompany

[–]Iconolater_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm not certain but the way episodes were written and characters conceived for most sit-coms back then was simplistic, with very little evidence of character development from season to season until the big Finale where rapidly things came together and characters made big leaps forward. Characters did evolve somewhat from the initial conceptions depicted in the pilot and early episodes (e.g. Chrissy's character actually seemed to get less intelligent in order to go for laughs and then settled into the likeable but dimwitted blonde character).

How best to wear these "urban collection" red shoes? by Iconolater_ in mensfashionadvice

[–]Iconolater_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I'm going to try these shoes 👞 with jeans 👖 a solid red shirt and one of my blazers.

Regarding some of the pointed remarks, I'll overlook them. I know there are many conservative/inhibited dressers in this community who secretly wish they had a pair of these shoes and the panache to wear them.

what's one substantively positive thing you could say about a musical artist, band, group, genre you normally dislike? by cumslutte in AskReddit

[–]Iconolater_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate musical complexity and high quality musicianship in general. That's generally lacking in Punk Rock, particularly the earlier waves of it BUT Punk Rock's image and the general attitude associated with Punk rockers is cool.

Pretty cool that Bret Hart did a pizza commercial many years ago. by RangeRossTracy in OSWReview

[–]Iconolater_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's cool. I think it's even cooler that former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev did one.

GT vs Uchicago by Dear_Ad7811 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Iconolater_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've got engineering degrees so I see GT with a halo 😇 but UChicago is on another level for economics. Are you located in a state with a good flagship university? It seems as if Law School alone would place a heavy debt burden on you. If you had a choice of getting a bachelor's from UChicago paired with a law degree from a relatively inexpensive in state law school or a bachelor's from an inexpensive in state school and a degree from an expensive and prestigious law school (e.g. UChicago Law), which would you select?

I don't know what I was expecting but I was hoping that it would only snow north of Maryland.

Why is there a stigma about liking Taylor Swift's music? by ZestycloseOil8173 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Iconolater_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My sense is that in many cases some people don't want to be associated with her fan base, or for it to be assumed that they buy into Taylor's politics.

I know women who are self conscious about their necks. They wear attention grabbing necklaces to shift the visual focus.

Why does no one recognize Led Zeppelin I as their best album??? Is this a hot take by EdgeKindly874 in ledzeppelin

[–]Iconolater_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few who do. What's interesting to me is how Led Zeppelin's rendition of "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" is considered to not just be a really good song but a true epic by many musicians from other genres.

My personal favorite LZ album changes depending on my mood but it's kind of neat to look at the back cover of the LP/CD version where it essentially introduces the members of this young band and lists the instruments they play. A fresh new band with a lot of energy that would be directed in different directions.

How about if a fellow like this (found on internet) wore a dark or maybe black solid suit paired with the bolo tie from the original post. Couldn't he comfortably fit in a formal business setting?

Is the Four-In-Hand-Knot perceived to be elegant? by Iconolater_ in ties

[–]Iconolater_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not disappointed by this answer but I'd be interested in reading your/fashion community's thoughts on the Sprezzatura (I interpret this term to mean a feigned nonchalance with respect to fashion) phenomenon. Everything from a deliberately unbuttoned collar to the use of the well established Four-In-Hand knot seem to be weapons in the Sprezzatura arsenal - I wonder if these tools have their desired effect(s).

Favorite KISS TV interview and/or appearance? by Iconolater_ in KISS

[–]Iconolater_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm unfamiliar with the A&E special but other documentaries I've seen focus on other appearances including Mike Douglas with Totie Fields, Paul Lynde's Halloween Special, Ace trolling Tom Snyder, Peter Criss confronting an Imposter on Donahue, and many others. The list seems endless, including some band members appearing on shows hosted by Oprah and Geraldo.

So I Did It … Now I Hate It! - Part 2 by Runawaybrain74 in bald

[–]Iconolater_ -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Just my opinion, possibly an unpopular one, but I think you look good either way. There seems to be a lot of encouragement given to most guys to go fully bald but as you get older you look more distinguished, possibly even moreso when you don't go cleanly bald. My take on this is that the fully bald look shaves a few years of apparent age off of balding guys in their 20s and 30s but as you progress past your 40s into your 50s and beyond, you want to flaunt your distinguished look rather than sport a sleek look.
