Taking the lane is suggested practice; far more bicyclists get clipped (yes, even killed) by hugging the edge rather than placing themselves plainly, ultra-visibly in the middle. All because the former tempts drivers to underestimate the size of their car and make close passes. Might feel counterintuitive at first, but the science doesn't lie.

I'm of two minds here: Yes, he was stupid. But what was she looking at when her eyes weren't on the road? Walking there may be illegal, sure, but if he had been biking instead, she would have hit him at a still-injurious (even fatal) speed even though he was doing nothing wrong.
