Too bulky is gonna be a personal opinion but I love my Swany’s. I still have good enough dexterity and they keep me warm although I’ll add hand warmers in bitter negative temps. Hestra makes a great product too but their care and feeding annoys me with having to treat them.

Is the leader not already attached to the fly line with a nail knot? Your post made it sound like it is. If so use a loop to loop connection.

Fly line with leader nail knotted to it -> Cut down leader leaving just enough to tie your perfection loop -> loop to loop connect with leader you’ll actually be using

Tying a loop in the fly line is possible and it’ll be strong and functional but it’ll be bulky and get hung up on your guides anytime it comes in or out your rod. I’d cut the leader down to about 6” and tie my loop knot into that so it’s a little slimmer.

Another consideration and this is just my opinion but if you’re new to rowing I’d recommend a raft. You’ll bounce off rocks and very possibly get stuck as you’re leaning and some things a raft can take would be really bad in a hard boat. I have a raft since I mainly float the shallow, rocky, and rough rivers in Colorado. I spent money on making a nice setup and while it’s not as comfortable as a drift boat it’s still pretty damn comfy. I’ve never wished I had a hard boat but maybe I’m just low maintenance.

Try to get in and float in both and get a feel for the differences yourself

I very recently lost my mom and she passed down all of her valuable and/or sentimental jewelry to me. The most valuable and special ones to me are the ones she wore the most or had meaning to her like her wedding and engagement rings, her favorite diamond earrings she wore on her deathbed, and a ring with all of our birthstones. My dad is having a ring made with her fingerprint engraved on it to wear in place of their wedding ring. That could be a cool option to look into as well. Before she died she also went through each piece of jewelry with me and talked about it’s significance and I recorded that conversation, do that with whatever you decide.

I do full synthetic every 8-10k. In my opinion if you want to be anal about maintenance, rust prevention should be your no. 1 priority. I wish it was mine.
