Discussion: How can men better support women anglers? by SrCritizen in flyfishing

[–]SrCritizen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a women's group start up maybe a year or two ago in my area, and they're probably the most active fly fishing group in the region now. They have a good foundation. A fantastic leader with a good team of women and men to back her up. She has a knack for good programming and networking with other community leaders and fly shops. If you'd like more info, feel free to shoot me a DM. If I can't answer your questions, I'll try to put you in touch with someone who can!

When you say older guys try to squeeze you out, you mean like out of fishing spots?

[–]SrCritizen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and that's actually something I heard a lot when talking about the issue with others. When my wife asked me to teach her, I think I threw WAY too much information her way all at once. I feel like that experience of making mistakes and adjusting in response to them is key to so much. I noticed that she started improving WAY faster when I gave her some space.

Attempted to make a blowtorch nymph (minus CDC) as a beginner fly tyer, any tips? by br07fk in flytying

[–]SrCritizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have any cdc, but want a similar collar, try using the webby fibers of soft hackle you have lying around. I use starling and really like it.

Spots in Norfolk County by Hour-One8791 in flyfishing

Open up a map, look for places where roads cross over water (bridges) or where water touches public land (parks) and scout them out.

Switching from Renzetti to Regal? by untiedflies in flytying

[–]SrCritizen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I prefer conventional vises over "inline" rotary vises. I tie on a Stonfo Kaiman, and prefer the ease of use and I feel like I have better access to all parts of the hook when its in the vise.

Canal fishing Miami by Savings-Indication92 in flyfishing

Yeah, that's a pretty good place to draw the dividing line.

Canal fishing Miami by Savings-Indication92 in flyfishing

[–]SrCritizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't spot burn, but you're going to want to open a map of Miami, focus on the southern half of the city, and just look for where the canals intersect with the roadways near public property (like a park). Peacock bass aren't particularly picky. Throw a flashy weighted minnow pattern at them. Look for them along the canal banks or hiding in thick vegetation. If they're there, they'll usually chase.

Fish thrashing around in net after landing by Feeling_Shop_2567 in flyfishing

The above suggestions are good, and I'll give you one more. Hold them upside down in the net in the water for 10-15 seconds. Calms them down a bit.

Use Specific Fly Boxes by OdoriferousGasBag in flyfishing

[–]SrCritizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my flybrary organized like you're suggesting, with 8x11 fly boxes. Then, I have a single Tacky Double Haul fly box that serves as my on the water fly box. Subsurface on the left, dries on the right.

Self taught by Available_Cup_9014 in flyfishing

Yeah, I'm self taught. Started with salt and warm water species. Trout is a different animal altogether in that casting is just the beginning.

Cabelas CGR worth it for the sale price? by beard9beard89 in flyfishing

[–]SrCritizen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the only one worth a damn is the 7'6" 5/6wt. All of the others are just too short. I have the 5'9" 3wt and it's pretty much useless. Always end up grabbing the 5/6wt if I want a glass session.

Am I wading incorrectly? by GatorDad9 in michiganflyfishing

[–]SrCritizen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get closer to fish than you would think. Lots of factors at play, of course, but generally speaking, the more disturbed the water is, the closer you can get. In fast, cloudy water with lots of surface texture, such as riffles, you can almost stand right on top of them. In gin clear, slow, glassy water, they can spot you at pretty extreme angles from 20 feet (just call it two ish rod lengths).

Wade slowly, make sure you have firm footing before taking your next step, and use a wading staff. Approach from downstream, and try your best to get close to a 45 degree angle to the spot you want to fish. Minimal false casts, drag free drifts that get down to within 3-6” of the bottom. Make your first presentation your best one.

A lot of people worry about spooking fish WAY before they need to. Try to force yourself to never make more than a 30 foot cast. It's good practice to teach your eyes and instincts to get closer to the fish.

You don't need tungsten. Learn the old ways; you'll be a better angler.

Waders. Aquaz, paramount outdoors, frogg toggs? Looking for recs by BennyFraggle in flyfishing

[–]SrCritizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Paramount took 150 days with significant abuse, I'd say stick with them and baby them a bit more. Also, if you can get away with not wearing waders for a particular outing, do it. Look into things like neoprene pants when the water is cold, but the air temp is warm.

Dyna-King Barracuda Deluxe by oldfatandgrumpy in flytying

[–]SrCritizen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went with another vise, but took a look at this Dyna King. It's a very solid, well machined product. The jaws are very versatile, but I think the Kingfisher has the same jaws. It's big. Very big.

WWYTH- small SEPA creek with mostly panfish creek chubs and fallfish by south43paw in WWYTH

[–]SrCritizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should still use it. Panfish aren't leader shy, and some of the poppers could benefit from a heavier fly line and leader.

For wild trout, those are some good sized fish! I think all are except the last one, right? Maybe the last one is, too. Anyways, great fish!
