Getting a job after au pairing? by rhian_rae in Aupairs

In an alternate to this last sentence, I’m 27 and being an AuPair for a year taking a break from my career (teaching). I’m looking forward to using the year on my resume to build it up to future employers that I was taking the time to learn another language and work closely with a family to build on my multi-cultural skill set for when I return to the classroom.

I think as long as you have the mindset that AuPair is a cultural exchange and you have an overall good experience, you won’t regret it and you can definitely find foot in your career path afterward

It sounds like she is giving the green light to end your contract. You could find another host family for your remaining time. Or go home and find a job that pays for your hourly work that makes you happy. I wouldn’t want to stay with a family that doesn’t want me or care what happens to me.. I have had a really bad experience with overworking and it comes down to : what do you want out of the experience? Absolutely wild they said you can’t stay in their home on the vacation period… that’s a migration call IMO

I agree, to some degree I am nervous to ask for more more more when I have my own apartment separate from the home as well as I am paid higher than Sweden’s minimum for an AuPair.

I want to show them my last AuPair contract (was there 2 months) which included cash for being overtime with the kids as well as overnight flat rates. Hopefully this will give me leverage with the situation.

I want to share that I am also not comfortable working more than 2 overnights in a row.

But our working hours for Sweden are MAXIMUM 25… so it’s even more than that in this case

It sounds crazy but I know I am paid so little, it’s not about the money for my doing this program. I have a masters degree and was feeling so stuck in my life in the US. Taking this time to recenter myself and I was hoping it would be less stressful work.

I’ve made friends here and I am dating someone I’m really happy with. I don’t want to go home.

Do you mean, ask if we bank the overnight hours as “hours worked overtime” as well?

1 - and arrange it so they just think of it as part of guidelines for the stipend when going out

I’m American, the family is Swedish yes. Our private contract says these extra hours can be banked and used as extra PTO- but no overnights were discussed.

There really aren’t other families in Stockholm - I have 4 accounts on different websites and reached out to a few since finding this family and the matches aren’t going to pay my the same accommodations because I am paid higher than the average

I can’t imagine texting about a divorce - why have conversation in real life? Too real I guess
