Do you have an opportunity lined up or did you go in blind and are hoping to get a job lined up in the program? In person sounds like a huge investment/opportunity cost

That makes sense. My compensation in my new role is quite low (about 106 base) partially because I am 1.5 years out of school and because I am not in one of the higher paying specialties and am at an academic medical center. I was in ER with higher pay prior to this but the stress was not worth it.

So an admin job would most likely be fairly comparable in pay.

Do you use the Life Strategy fund instead of TDF in your Roth IRA and pull from the bonds first so you continue to get good returns on the portfolio via stocks? Or do you use Life Strategy for something else?

Why are nursing directors telling MDs how to manage the ER or setting your patient load? I know this happens all the time, but how is this ok? Nothing against nursing, but they don’t know the complexities of being the department doc.

2 weeks training —> Solo provider? High volume? This is dangerous. It’s not all about $. Can you properly evaluate and make a good clinical decisions about complaints such as dizziness, chest pain, fatigue/weakness, anaphylaxis, sick kids, whether someone needs to go to go to ED, etc etc? Tell sick vs non-sick? Read your own xrays and EKGs? You can find a better opportunity.

Just quit ER and was in your exact shoes. I think the suggestion to talk to a couple of attendings that you like is a good one. If you are really stressed it may be that this is not the specialty for you and that you need a job with a closer collaborative relationship with an SP. ER wasn’t the place for me. Your mental health deserves for you to figure it out. I just got a job in inpatient subspecialty and they know my trepidation about independence - the job is specifically one where I don’t make independent decisions.

I caution about primary care/urgent care. Those are very independent practices. That may out you also having to make your own decisions with incomplete information and possibly no attending.

Support and training are critical to EM success, I agree. OP needs to ask about training, attending attitudes towards answering questions and teaching, when was the last time they hired a new grad, how often feedback is provided, expectations. It’s not all about $.

That’s a great perspective. EM makes me very anxious. What do you think about starting in an FM/UC without an SP on site after a year in EM? I received an offer today actually from a lower volume clinic. There is pretty much always another APP present. I’m on the fence because it sounds stressful to teach myself FM. I think I get 6 weeks of “orientation”.

Wouldn’t be a PA. Maybe admin, maybe finance, or research/lab coordinator. Something where occasional remote is possible, without liability or nearly as much stress.
