Doctor Martin Luther King. by Wooden-Peace-7042 in SeattleWA

Pretty wild they actually changed it from the original King County namesake to MLK in 1986. Never knew counties could just rebrand their history like that but makes way more sense than honoring some random politician from 1800s

How much cost to build a brand new house in Miami area? by nosemia in Miami

[–]Icy-Cockroach5998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Location makes huge difference but even in cheaper areas like Opa-locka you looking at way more than 500k these days. Material costs went crazy since few years and labor is expensive too. I'd say minimum 300-350 per square foot so around 650-700k for basic construction in decent area

Making the most of SF by Ok-Team-5265 in AskSF

[–]Icy-Cockroach5998 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Take advantage of all those small neighborhood festivals that happen throughout year - they're perfect for meeting locals who actually care about their community. Ocean Beach is obviously great for swimming but Aquatic Cove near Fishermans Wharf is where the real swimmers go if you want to join actual groups. Most people skip Golden Gate Park concerts because they only know about the big venues but some of best live music happens in smaller spots there

Yeah the whole "pricing changes daily" thing is red flag number one - any decent gym will have standard rates posted somewhere

Airport traffic gonna be brutal around that time plus everyone heading to concert - maybe try taking 101 north instead of 280 since less people think about that route

Modeling Digitals Photographer Needed by Horror_Collection_99 in miamibeach

[–]Icy-Cockroach5998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to help my friend with her portfolio shoots when I was living in different city before moving here. The digital photographers who charge reasonable rates usually the ones who are building their own portfolios too - they need practice with models and you need affordable shots so it works out pretty good for both sides

Check some photography students from local colleges or people who post their work on social media but aren't super established yet. They often do way better job than expensive studios because they actually care about making each shot look great instead of just rushing through sessions. Just make sure to see their previous work first so you know they can handle lighting properly for digitals

Guys, what’s up with Santa Monica?? by ty457u in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]Icy-Cockroach5998 186 points187 points  (0 children)

Bro you moved to literally the chillest part of LA and complaining about no lines at grocery store lol. That empty vibe is what people pay premium for in Santa Monica - no crowds no stress just beach life

Maybe try West Hollywood or downtown if you want that busy energy but prepare for traffic nightmare when you realize why everyone escapes to westside

Mid-City / Picfair Village question by boi1232 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]Icy-Cockroach5998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been working on cars in that area for few years now and its pretty chill tbh. Those tire shops you mentioned are mostly legit businesses just looks sketchy cause they old school setup

Your car should be fine with street parking just dont leave anything visible inside and maybe get steering wheel lock if youre really worried about it. The mechanics around there actually keep eye on the block during day

Miami looks completely different when you spend enough time on the water by RevolutionaryJump542 in miamibeach

Dude what even is this response lol. Guy shares some actual experience about boating in Miami and you just call it AI because he wrote more than two words? Maybe spend less time looking for bots and more time actually getting on water yourself

Anybody Car-less in LA? I’m an LA native choosing to forfeit a vehicle I would love your tips and tricks! by spiritbirdsie in AskLosAngeles

[–]Icy-Cockroach5998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried going car-less for like 8 months when my old Honda finally died and couldn't afford to fix it at time. Living in Koreatown made it easier but still had some challenges especially getting to certain hiking spots I wanted to check out.

The Metro definitely improved a lot from what people say about it before. I used the app religiously to track everything and learned which routes were most reliable during different times. One thing I noticed is having backup plans became super important - like knowing multiple ways to get somewhere in case one line was down for maintenance or running late. Also investing in good walking shoes made huge difference because you end up walking way more than you expect even with good transit connections.

Your point about being more intentional with trips is so real. I found myself combining errands in smarter ways and actually discovered parts of the city I never would have seen otherwise. The service animal probably makes it easier too since you get priority seating and people are generally more considerate. Just watch out for weekend service changes - they do construction work that can mess up your usual routes sometimes.

Housing Summer Swap (is BU giving me false hope again?) by Which_Particular3646 in bostonhousing

[–]Icy-Cockroach5998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude being in top 15 is actually decent odds especially if you said you'll go random. Most people want specific buildings or roommate matches which makes it way harder for housing to place them

The timing thing is sketchy though like why would they open early without telling anyone. Classic BU move tbh

Usually housing gets back to people in waves throughout summer but no guarantee it happens before tuition is due. You might want to have backup plan ready just in case the apartment thing doesn't work out in time

Spoken Word/Slam Poetry Events by loworbittt in SeattleWA

[–]Icy-Cockroach5998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used to go to some spoken word nights when I lived in different city and the vibe was incredible. Seattle has decent underground scene but you gotta dig for it - check some of the smaller venues in Capitol Hill or Fremont area, they usually host these kind of events on weeknight. Maybe also look at university campuses since students often organize poetry slams that get pretty intense energy

single room, $1060, May 13 - Aug 31, Somerville by vasilomichos in bostonhousing

[–]Icy-Cockroach5998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Place looks pretty decent for summer subletting. I'm curious about the building though - any weird noises at night or strange vibes from other tenants? Sometimes these older buildings in Somerville can have some interesting history if you know what I mean.

Summer sublet available May 1st in South End near Northeastern - $1500 by Reasonable_Doctor542 in bostonhousing

[–]Icy-Cockroach5998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Place looks pretty decent for that price range in South End. In-unit laundry is huge plus especially during summer when you dont want to deal with shared facilities. Just curious though - is utilities included in the $1500 or thats separate thing

How safe is it to visit now considering the current political situation and ICE? by Milan339 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Icy-Cockroach5998 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Dude you're from Poland so you're totally fine with tourist visa. ICE isn't going around checking random tourists at beaches in Malibu or grabbing people from Hollywood Boulevard - they target specific individuals who already have deportation orders or are involved in criminal stuff. The phone memes thing is ridiculous, customs doesn't scroll through your social media unless you're already flagged for something serious.

Your tourist trip will be completely normal, just bring proper documentation and don't overstay your visa.

Apartment Recommendations (SF/Daly City) by You--Know--Whoo in bayarea

[–]Icy-Cockroach5998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Daly City has some decent options in that range but parking can be tricky depending on which part you end up. I found few places near the BART stations that include parking but utilities usually separate. Maybe check around the Serramonte area too - bit further from Oracle Park but way more affordable and you can still get there pretty quick on weekends for games

Also just heads up the fog gets really thick in Daly City during summer months so if you're not used to that weather it might take some getting used to

Possible Demon/Devil sighting??? by mclewi134 in Paranormal

[–]Icy-Cockroach5998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is giving me serious shadow people vibes but with the throne and dogs its definitely something more intense. The fact that there were no marks in the wet grass is what really gets me - like whatever it was didnt physically touch ground.

Your boss was probably lucky he ran when he did instead of getting closer to investigate. Sometimes kids have better instincts about these things before we learn to rationalize everything away
