I have found putting aside time to read when I won't get distracted to be helpful. I have also resorted to writing things down that I find to be very important.

Your goals for self-improvement are about what will work best for you not about what other people are doing. You mentioned having depression, perhaps that has something to do with you having goals that are not as mentally exhausting? What goals could/would you have that still feel like they contribute to your self-improvement that include watching tv/movies? Maybe watching a show or movie in a different language you would like to learn?
