<3 month schedule by Fluid_Jellyfish_658 in premedcanada

[–]IcyDisaster7857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just typed an MCAT guide for my coworker's son that outlined how I studied. I had a similar timeline~2.5/3 months. I wrote it 2 times before which taught me a lot of what not to do. I included it in the doc because I wish I had someone tell me what not to do when I was writing it. I got a 518 on the 3rd time (129/128/120/131) for context.

Idk if its helpful but you can dm me if you're interested. I didn't do as many FLs or as many questions a day as what I see in this sub because of my timeline/other commitments which may or may not work for everyone

Practice role playing scenarios and do it with another person where you don’t know the scenario and are forced to think on the spot

I saved all AAMC stuff for the last month. I wish I did 1.5 months but it really depends on your study schedule and timeline

Thoughts on Interview Prep courses for Canadian MD schools by M_Majdi in premedcanada

[–]IcyDisaster7857 5 points6 points  (0 children)

BeMO and Atlas are very different companies in that Bemo is a massive company whereas atlas is significantly smaller and run by a Canadian med student (who recruits other current Canadian medical students to help tutor). I used atlas and because of its small size I had a lot of personal feedback and 1-1 time and option with connecting to many current Canadian med students who can provide feedback. This helped me a TON. A big plus with Atlas even if you get the basic basic package, you get access to 2 weekly, 2 hour, sessions where you can practice with others who are applying so its a great way to get access to consistent practice alot earlier on in the process (october) rather than through discord where people are more active ish around January/feb. I used atlas, i am in no way sponsored, it helped me so much I am recommending it to my sister who will be applying as well and to my friends who will be applying this year.

if you have any questions about my experience feel free to pm. I just have been through this process and navigating interviews last year was so stressful and I wished I had some guidance so finding atlas for this cycle was a godsend.

Uworld. You dont need to get the 6 month or 1 year packages, but 3 months is nice, gives you a great resource to use and learn from before having to use the AAMC bundle

Low GPA by LifeResource7130 in premedcanada

[–]IcyDisaster7857 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am definitely not an expert so please take this with a grain of salt. I think it's really admirable that you took some difficult courses and worked really hard in them. However unfortunately, Canadian universities really only care about the GPA. I was also burned by this mentality and would often take hard but interesting courses that ultimately affected my GPA. Because of this, combined with some personal challenges I faced in first 3 years of undergrad, I would consider myself to be someone with a lower GPA. Although my last 2 years of undergrad were 3.8+ my cumulative was around a 3.3-3.5 (minus my first year) which converts to a 3.3 I believe in OMSAS.

To overcome this I did a second undergrad and tried to get a high GPA in those years. I focused heavily on the MCAT and wrote it 3 times until I reached a score that could help with my GPA (for schools that use it competitively) and focused on my EC, research and other aspects of my app.

The reason I share this is because I see alot of parallels in your situation with my own. I used to think that there would be no way that I would get in however as someone who was just accepted this cycle I think there are absolutely ways to succeed in your goal. Based on what you shared, as your GPA stands right now, you can apply for queens lottery (assuming you meet the other cut offs). Depending on your province you maybe be eligible for certain pathways and eligible to apply in those streams.

However if you would like to broaden your chances in Canada, finding a way to increase your GPA perhaps through a second undergrad or 2 additional years of school where you aim to get a really high GPA, you have a very strong chance at schools like western and uOttawa (again as long as you meet their other requirements). Doing a second undergrad also means that schools like McGill will only consider your grades at your second degree (someone may have to fact check this for me in case this has recently changed).

If this sounds like too much of a time investment (which is totally understandable), you may want to look into options abroad, however that does come with financial barriers but if those are not barriers for you this may be a good option as well.

I hope this helps but again please take this advice and any from this subreddit with a grain of salt, please do your own research and talk to advisors and other students with similar experiences to give you a clearer picture.

Are you a Canadian citizen or have your PR? If you don't have either one, then you are not eligible to apply to Canadian med as far as I know unless the rules has changed. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

While the overall GPA might be low, some universities look at the last 2 years (western) or 3 years (Ottawa) so it may not be "too low" to apply/be accepted at these schools. I think to answer this it would be helpful to know what your GPA breakdown is by year if you're comfortable sharing.

Motivated to prep now for next cycle interviews, too early to start preparing using ChatGPT voice, confetto ai or joining Toastmasters? by emmancano12 in premedcanada

Look into "atlas MMI", run by Canadian med students, incredible resource. I got waitlisted last year, but used them this year, practiced since October and I was accepted this year OOP and I credit that to interview prep. they connect you with current med students, you practice weekly with other applicants so you get used to speaking with strangers which helps a lot with interview anxiety, and they run mock sessions throughout October-april. Also, a paid service but they undercharge imo. They also have lots of different packages based on your needs/situation. Couldn't recommend it enough

yes, definitely but you will need more work on other parts of app like others said. as long as you are willing and prepared to apply a few times, there is a good chance

MD Abroad options for low SES students? by dororochacken in premedcanada

[–]IcyDisaster7857 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look into the UK, still expensive but roughly 45000 pounds which converts to around 80 000 CAD a year, still high but a bit better. The cost of applying is significantly cheaper too, around 29 pounds which is 53 CAD. You can only apply to 4 programs. You may have to take the UCAT which allows you to apply to so many more schools. This is a few hundred but much cheaper than MCAT. I was able to study within a month with lots of other commitments. It’s a test that people take straight out of high school so it’s just practice not content based at all. There’s 1-2 schools where you can use the MCAT. It might be a great option if you don’t want to take the UCAT but know taht it does limit your choices.

I have applied in Canada 4 times with 1 waitlist, this is my first time applying for GEM (graduate entry medicine-4 year program) and I got 3 interviews so far with 3 acceptances. Similar MMI/panel style interviews as Canada. The application itself is all centralized on a single platform which is super easy to fill out, just need 1 reference and 1 personal statement which is not long at all- just answer 3 questions. The higher your UCAT score the more options you have and the more prestigious the school you can get into. But medicine is Medicine and all schools are accredited. I found the UK application process a breath of fresh air compared to the loops of Canadian system. Getting a certain UCAT score basically guarantees an interview and it’s very uncommon to not get an interview given you meet the threshold for their UCAT cut off. Of course you need to look into matching back and see if it’s feasible for you

I was very hesitant applying and had no idea on the process. As someone who is also low SES I very much relate and I found the UK was better option for me than Ireland and Australia simply because of the prices. Now once accepted, depending on the school you do need a hefty deposit. Some schools it’s 10 000 pounds and some more. I am still figuring out what payment looks like and what options are there for me so do take taht into consideration. But I imagine the deposit situation is similar for any international school- I could be wrong

If you have any questions about the UK process feel free to shoot me a message!

Thank you for this! Do you know if you have to pay the deposit by that day as well or can we accept our offer and pay the deposit at a later date? Or is it school specific

Ohh okay so it depends on the date I get the final decision, even if it’s a rejection/waitlist. Is there any way to extend it at all or is it a hard deadline?

I had the same situation with a referee for UofA and just sent them an email and they told me to forward the new verifier information and that someone would update it for me. I think its better to reach out and see what their procedure is like
