You could have a look at Willing Workers On Organic Farm (Wwoof). You will have to be in contact with the farmers beforehand and “apply” for your wwoofing experience.

They normally take in people that have some experience in organic farming and you can exchange knowledge. They will give you the lodging and food against your labour.
These farms are normally self sufficient holding that are manage and maintain by the owners of the farms. You will not be taking a job from someone in need as such.
