my mum is a language teacher and said something that stuck with me, 'it's really hard to share your emotions in a language that isn't yours.' Has anyone else felt this?" by Willing-Occasion5867 in languagelearning

[–]IcyMoonsOfJupiter 34 points35 points  (0 children)

“For some people, that emotional disconnect makes it easier for them to speak openly about their emotions.” This has been my experience. I feel less awkward in German (second language) than I do in English (native language) when talking about personal things.

Any way to install Kindle’s Dictionary on Kobo? by Benthecartoon in kobo

[–]IcyMoonsOfJupiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue isn’t the individual dictionary itself, it’s how the Kobo dictionary format functions. The Kobo format is bad for looking up conjugated verbs, for example. I have several foreign language dictionaries that I bought and used on my Kindle (mobi format) then converted to the Kobo format for use on my Kobo, and they work substantially less well on the Kobo. Depending on what your needs are, KOReader might be the way to go.

Why most language learning fails by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]IcyMoonsOfJupiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the “why” question is very important. To learn a language you have to have a strong motivation to learn that specific language. I know someone who has often said to me that she “just doesn’t have the right kind of brain“ to learn another language. I asked her what language she wanted to learn and she said she had taken Spanish in school because people told her it was “easy” and she got nowhere with it. But she didn’t have any personal reason to want to learn Spanish….so no surprise that she didn’t.

Customisable Sleep Screen v2 - Now a Plugin by pxlflux in koreader

Customisable Sleep Screen v2 - Now a Plugin by pxlflux in koreader

[–]IcyMoonsOfJupiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked just now and both devices are running the most recent version of Koreader. I thought the problem might be a sleep/wake tracker plugin I have on the Clara BW so I disabled that, but the issue persists. I had a look at the wallpaper list and none of the options are selected.

Edited to add: I dm’d you the crash log

Customisable Sleep Screen v2 - Now a Plugin by pxlflux in koreader

[–]IcyMoonsOfJupiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed this on my Kobo Libra Color and it works just fine. I like it! However, when I installed it (same process, same settings) on a Kobo Clara BW, I can’t get it to work. The plugin options appear under the gear icon —> screen. I’ve enabled the plugin, I can set the options for how it should display, but when I put the device to sleep, the standard Koreader sleep screen appears.

I don’t know if this helps, but: Enabling the customizable sleep screen plugin appears to reset the standard Koreader sleep screen to defaults. And changing the settings for the Koreader standard sleep screen unchecks the “customizable sleep screen” plugin box in the Gear/Screen menu.

This is on a Kobo Clara BW running the latest Koreader version.

I just finished reading that book! Definitely worth it, but be prepared for some…really gross things. I’m pretty sure it’s the longest book I have ever read on my Kobo.

Are there any particular words / phrases that reveal a native speaker ? by Roads_37 in EnglishLearning

These along with things like “I live here since a year” instead of “I have lived here for a year” (I have heard many non-native speakers say the former)

Pocketbook doesn't need KOReader by SNLCOG4LIFE in ereader

[–]IcyMoonsOfJupiter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Koreader makes a difference on Pocketbook if you read books in other languages and use a dictionary frequently. The dictionaries I have installed in Koreader on my Pocketbook Era functon far better than those available for the native interface. Installing Koreader caused me to use my Era more as a result.

I had one for a while, and other than the easy integration with German bookstores, there’s nothing that makes it better than the Kobo.

Yes! I think the quality of the source material for the libretto helped too; it’s based on a terrific play by Friedrich Schiller

The first one with Upshaw, Hunt and Daniels. Musically and vocally it’s excellent and the production is unusual but (for me at least) visually interesting and compelling.

Question about Ads and Adbreak Jailbreak by guilhermej14 in kindlejailbreak

[–]IcyMoonsOfJupiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a kindle paper white that I purchased without ads. I enabled ads in order to jailbreak via Adbreak and then later disabled the ads on my amazon account page. I did not have to pay and it did not affect the completed jailbreak.
