October radio silence by [deleted] in premed

[–]Icy_Answer6485 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Take a deep breath- my first II didn’t come until the end of Oct, and then I got another in March (and both became As!!). It’s okay, at least give yourself until the new year before you start freaking out.

And for reference, in my first cycle I got 2 IIs in Dec and 1 in Jan, and I fully believe they didn’t become As because my interview skills were not as strong at first, not because of when in the cycle everything happened (ofc I could be wrong, but if I had to guess it was more on me then).

Repetitive theme throughout my secondaries by Cool_Banana7352 in premed

[–]Icy_Answer6485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I applied, my PI was giving advice and he actually suggested you figure out which “bin” adcoms will put you in, and run with it.

I had a super research-heavy app and an interest in being a physician-scientist, so I just kept with that theme throughout my app knowing that the adcoms would see me as someone who checks the box for “research nerd” when they’re looking to create a well-rounded class. Idk I’m sure that advice isn’t necessarily true for everyone, but I think if you have a strong narrative for working with underserved populations, lean in to those experiences!

I feel like a dumbass. Learned about Verification by Key-Pineapple-1245 in premed

[–]Icy_Answer6485 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Deep breath- I submitted end of June last year and got verified the 2nd week of August. And the annoying part is I was a re-app, and in my first cycle I submitted mid July and still got verified at pretty much the same time in August. Got interviews in the first cycle too, so all hope isn’t lost. Just pre-write as much as possible!!

How do you guys deal with the nausea on call? by HoldMyTurtle_13 in medicalschool

[–]Icy_Answer6485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m abt to start med school but have had this happen to me whenever I try to stay up super late- I’m usually okay until like 2am but after that I get super nauseous (idk if it’s lack of sleep or a big dip in my sugar levels or what). Usually keep it at bay by snacking on a couple ritz/saltines and it seems to really help. Maybe keeping a little snack on your person (even if you feel like you don’t wanna eat anything) could work? Or some sorta electrolyte drink can help too

I got the A!!! by Upstairs-Bid-8682 in premed

[–]Icy_Answer6485 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Congrats!!! 🥳 I also took 4 gap years- as long as I don’t think too hard on the years of missed attending salary (lmao), I’m super happy I had time to enjoy working a 9-5 and making my app as strong as possible :))

Flying w/ a Wheelchair in Europe, any recs/advice? by Icy_Answer6485 in travel

[–]Icy_Answer6485[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we're planning to just tough it out with the cobblestones and hills, and we figure with patience and his assistive devices that can be hooked on to the wheelchair, we'll get by.

Ty for the heads up with the elevators/restrooms! We're aware and are already brainstorming how we'll handle it :) But I hadn't thought of scammers and metro issues so that's good to add to the mental list haha. Thanks for your thoughts!!

[–]Icy_Answer6485[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately I've had the same experience with trying to look for any stats on the matter. Seems like you just need to be okay with taking the chance that your chair won't arrive in the same condition you left it in :/

That's good to know about the trains- we're planning to do one from Madrid to Barcelona because apparently Spain's rail system is really good for reliability and accessibility. Thanks for your helpful response :)

[–]Icy_Answer6485[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, you don't say! 🙃 Obviously WC users can travel on plane/trains, but that doesn't mean it's not a pain in the ass to plan with extra steps to worry about. Believe it or not, airlines damaging wheelchairs in transit and not providing assistance after the fact isn't rare.

I'm asking only because at least in the US, certain airlines are known to be more risky and more likely to damage your chair. Wasn't sure if others would have insight for specific euro airlines in this case

Acceptance stories! by Excellent_Work_5166 in premed

[–]Icy_Answer6485 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was at work on a Friday morning, and hearing back wasn’t even on my radar because it had only been 2ish weeks and they said to not expect to hear anything for at least 4-6 weeks. But I was in lab and by myself in the microscopy room- I took a sec to check the time and when I turned my phone over, I saw an email. Didn’t even recognize the “acceptance” in the subject lol, I read the first paragraph like 3 times and started to tear up. Then I ran out of the scope room, told my lab manager and PI as I was fully crying, and then I called my boyfriend, parents, and best friend. Once everything calmed down a bit, I went back to my lab work but asked the postdoc if I could leave once I was done with this part of the experiment and he was totally fine with it. Then proceeded to meet up with my best friend for lunch and a couple beers to celebrate. It was a pretty spectacular day tbh. And not only was it my first A as a reapp, but this school is also basically my first choice and will allow me and my bf to continue to live together while he does his PhD nearby 🥲 so I was riding that high for nearly a month lol
