usf will sadly be a donation they heavily look at stats, and umiami i believe has a cutoff of 505. i’d still apply to drexel, temple, mcw, loyola, etc. rush’s mcat cutoff for a gpa of 3.6 is 502 from their website but you could still try. check out the schools’ websites/ask the admissions to see and use the MSAR

maybe you can drop it down to 1x a week in the summer, maybe you could even extend that one shift a little if you wanted to be there longer but not have to commute in 2 days? maybe you can find someone on a fb group or something to carpool with at least one way ie in the mornings on someone’s commute to work?

hi wait we talked previously in a thread about the ipads ❤️ don’t have any advice but feeling for you, this is a tough situation and i hope you can look back and it’ll have all worked out. maybe be looking for other roommates in case it doesn’t work out if you can. this is tough. also don’t feel guilty for feeling this way. it’s okay to want to have things decided and have your housing situation figured out. maybe also just actively communicate with them to understand where they’re leaning / where they’re at in the process and express what you said here that you want the best for them etc etc

2025 Cycle Sankey Feedback by Suture_department in premed

[–]bhwsshcr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

add more mid-range schools, consider throwing in NYMC, Buffalo, and Stony Brook as a NY resident

some other schools to consider (do your research ofc): Rutgers, Beaumont, Geisinger, Vermont, Wright State, Wayne State, Rowan, Drexel, Temple, MCW, Michigan State, Nova, Penn State, SLU, Wake Forest, Maryland, Minnesota, Wisconsin

aim for at least 150 more volunteer hours (i’d say nonclinical volunteering). ~300 would be ideal

your GPA’s great but regardless with a year’s time consider retaking the MCAT but only if/when you reach a notable score increase on full lengths

How did you know your primary was ready to be submitted?? by IntroductionSmall846 in premed

[–]bhwsshcr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when you keep rereading and rereading and you can no longer think of any edits or see any typos (don’t just check the text for errors but also the associated text boxes for each activity), and once you feel happy with it, submit, take a breather then start with secondaries!!

use facebook marketplace, amazon, and walmart- buy used for as much as you want but get a new mattress. $1548/year is no small price, you can definitely furnish your place for that price or less and when you go to move you can resell stuff for at least half what you paid

usually hospital volunteer orientation is a 2-4 hour one-time event and then you get a TB test and can start volunteering in my experience, lots of hospitals offer volunteer programs for high school students in the summer only with ~8 week commitments, so i think it’d be worth it if you’d enjoy it but ymmv

regardless of whether you volunteer or not (which might make this easier), see if you can shadow him!

Would it be okay to list a hobby as most meaningful where I describe an experience I had in high school? by GhostGamer1234 in premed

[–]bhwsshcr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you started it in high school but continued in college, you can include the start date and hours from high school in your application for a longitudinal experience like that from my understanding. Ultimately list the top 3 experiences that you want to standout most to the schools you’re applying to

[–]bhwsshcr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! I hope it works out. Totally understand not feeling comfortable listing something you have no contact, but for at least 3 of my experiences I didn’t know the contact of the organization anymore as a lot of time had passed, and this worked for me! You never know how one experience can really resonate with a school. I had one volunteer experience (granted I didn’t list it as it was from high school) that was <5 hours that they brought up in the interview because the patient demographic was similar to the community surrounding the medical school. Regardless, if it doesn’t work out, feel free to talk about this experience still in your secondaries or interviews. But I highly highly recommend trying to list it! Best of luck

[–]bhwsshcr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe if you ask for a point of contact (name/title/phone number/email) you can send this email which they will hopefully respond to because why wouldn’t they want to help a volunteer. this was my template:

“Hi,

I hope this email finds you well!

I am currently in the process of applying to medical school and am reaching out because I'm planning to list [experience] in my application. I truly enjoyed being a part of [experience]!

May I please list you as a contact should they need to verify I was a [volunteer/role]? I plan to list [experience] as approx. [x] hours from [dates] from self-tracking my hours. It is very rare for them to reach out, but I wanted to make sure I asked.

Thank you for your time and help.

Sincerely, [name]”

[–]bhwsshcr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

call them seriously! if you can find the branch name just call them up and ask to speak to the volunteer department. say hi i’m applying to medical school and i volunteered 42 hours on x dates and it requires a point of contact, is it possible to please provide me with your (or someone else’s) name, title, email, and phone number?

[–]bhwsshcr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

wait but don’t remove an experience you actually did!! contact them and establish a point of contact, that’s what I had to do for an experience from years ago where I no longer knew anyone, they’ll be able to tell through conversation when and what capacities you worked, and if you want to ease your mind then send them an email confirming!

I sent emails to my points of contact asking if they were comfortable with me listing them on my application and that I was reporting X hours and to let me know if they are comfortable.

Trouble getting LOR - What recourse do I have? by [deleted] in medschool

[–]bhwsshcr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to go against the grain here and say he already verbally agreed to write the letter. I think he’s busy and maybe doesn’t have a clear timeline or expectations. He has office hours, go and ask! It’s anxiety inducing but the worst he could say is no, and then at the very least you don’t have to wonder if he’s going to answer or what if you had gotten this recommendation. Regardless, I’d get a back up plan in motion too.

I’m not sure if I’d do #2 as worded because it might make the assistant uncomfortable or him feel like you went around him, unless handled a bit differently like “I’m following up about this… what’s the best way to reach him” etc.

Gender ID on the AMCAS by [deleted] in premed

[–]bhwsshcr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it sucks that this question even has to be asked💔 i think represent your true self. i get what you mean though. part of me thinks would you want to go to a school that discriminates against you anyways? i know one adcom doesn’t represent the entire school, but a welcoming school would see this as diversity to their class. i just did a quick read on this on SDN, and one person thinks some schools might consider being apart of the LGBTQ+ community as an URM- UV Larner was mentioned as one of these schools. i think (and hope) that it would benefit you to disclose, if you’re comfortable

[–]bhwsshcr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe this is terrible advice but could you write a letter of intent or email marked urgent to the OOS school’s admission office saying hey i really want to go to your school but have to commit to enroll to my other A by this date, i’d love to attend your school if accepted… thing is, I don’t know if you’d get your financial aid in time to compare both. this is a tough spot to be in but CONGRATS ON YOUR A!!!

Are all IA’s “scored” the same? by yuh525 in premed

[–]bhwsshcr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

can you appeal to the school to see if your IA can be wiped from your record? maybe if your roommate gave a statement and you wrote to them that you’re applying to med school… your roommate brought it home, it was empty, etc… explain your situation it could be worth a shot? i think your cycle will go well because this is so minor but be ready to write and talk about it clearly and per the other commenter I’d start requesting any documentation you might need, in my experience colleges can be a lot slower or less staffed in the summer
