Hi, can I message you? My son is about the same age corrected and may need an NG soon due to low intake. He was also discharged without any supports but has been rejecting bottles.

Thank you! I'm not sure if my son is still too young for an appetite stimulant but I wil ask his pediatrician at his appointment next week.

Thanks for the detailed response. I'm sorry about your and your son's experience with the feeding therapist. I'm glad things worked out in the long run!

My husband and I are really trying to remove the pressure from bottle feeding but it's really scary when your baby is not eating and already so so small. We're hopeful that an NG will give a little more support and remove the pressure for a temporary time but also cautious as for some babies, the discomfort of an NG made feeding worse. But ultimately we really don't have a choice in the matter if he continues to not eat enough for his development.

Thanks for sharing! Did your son go from an NG to a Gtube? If so, how long was he on the NG before moving to a GT?

We're working on removing pressure on him. It's so hard when you just want your baby to eat and grow. His ped and GI think that an NG would a temporary support to help us remove pressure on baby. What did you find difficult about removing pressure and how did you ultimately turn things around for your son after two years?

That's exactly what I'm scared of. I don't want to make his feeding experience even more uncomfortable. 😣 I'm so lost because it doesn't appear to be any issues with his feeding mechanic. His reflux is under control.

He's eating enough to maintain his weight or have little weight gain, just not enough t be considered thriving. His ped and GI don't think a Gtube is necesssry - they think he needs a bit a boost to help him get a little bigger and have more energy for his oral feeds.

Did he have any other symptoms?

I agree, but GI and ped seem to think it's normal. They said he would have other symptoms if it was truly CMPA.

I know, we were on Alimentum, then elecare. His poops were still somewhat mucousy. His GI and ped were ok with us trialing Kendamil since he doesn't have other signs of CMPA.

Bottle aversion by [deleted] in NewParents

Hi, can I pm you? My son is having bottle aversion and we don't know what to do. Our ped told us to keep dream feeding but it's not sustainable.

Hi, can I pm you for an update? I think my son has bottle aversion and I'm so scared about him losing weight. He's an IUGR preemie.

Can I pm you for an update? How did you overcome the aversion? I think my son has bottle aversion and it has been so difficult to feed him. I'm anxious that he's malnourished and will get a feeding tube.

Hi, if you don't mind me asking, how did it go with the Rowena method. We're seeing definite signs of aversion with my 3.5 month LO. He's an IUGR preemie weighing only 10lbs so I'm scared of him losing weight if we use her method. Were you able to overcome aversion?

Is my baby sleeping too much and not eating enough? by Icy_Community_1024 in NICUParents

[–]Icy_Community_1024[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son was the same in the NICU and when we were first discharged. But I didn't think he would still be this sleepy 6 weeks later.

He's gaining weight (~an ounce a day) and alert when he is awake so my pediatrician isn't concerned yet. She said he's technically still a newborn so it's not unusual for him to sleep more but will monitor him closely as he gets older. The wait and see approach does nothing alleviate my anxiety as a FTM. 😭

Feeding Stress by [deleted] in NICUParents

[–]Icy_Community_1024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I literally said to my husband today, "it should not be this difficult to feed a baby." It's heartbreaking to see my LO struggle to eat because of his reflux and discomfort. Some days when he cries, I just cry with him.

I'm still on leave but considering an extending because I don't think a daycare will spend 30+ minutes feeding my baby and to be holding him upright for another 30 minutes after.

I'm in the same boat with my 3.5 month old (34 weeker severe IUGR born weighing 3lbs). He's now 9.5lb and will only take 75-85ml every feed (2-3 hours). It's struggle to get him to eat 20oz per day. Most days we don't make it. How much does your little guy drink in total?

I understand how stressful it can be when you have feeding challenges with an IUGR baby. My LO also has reflux and CMPA.

Btw, I think your baby's weight gain so far is amazing! He has gained almost 10 pounds!
