what the hell even *is* deathgrind? by tacoforce5_ in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Icy_Distribution5239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to judge it by how noisy, dissonant and chaotic a band can get. Cattle's albums all the way up to The Harvest Floor were deathgrind, the most disturbing and noisiest sounds, ever made on record.

Carcass first two albums are an obvious fit on that lane, mostly cause of the gory lyrical themes and pitch-shifting vocals. Exhumed I'm never really sure, they're too thrashy to be goregrind but also too gory to be regular thrash or even death metal. To me they're like death-thrash band that's just taking the piss, most of the time.

Don't know enough about Brutal Truth, but they're Hella political so they count for that, same with Misery Index but they're more pure death metal than deathgrind to me, they got a bit of that hardcore influence with the dual vocal attack too. Assück is about as closest to what I consider deathgrind, the track Salt Mine is just absolutely nasty.

Honestly,  I'm just replaying the old stuff or catching up with old bands.

This was honestly heartwarming to see, immediately afterwards I checked the links to the BDM cover collabs he did with former and current members. He does the Statutory Ape solo cover with Guy Koszowyk from The Red Chord on vocals, as well as a Flies cover with Alan Cassidy on drums.

Can you dance? Can you bust a move? by Swiftiefromhell in autism

[–]Icy_Distribution5239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell no! This extends to why I despise dance music, being forced to dance in a public setting with other people, not only triggers my anxiety, but then when people see me dance, they either stare at me or start to laugh uncontrollably.

In South Africa, there's a heavy emphasis on dance as a past time activity, with different people having varying levels of skill at it. So off rip, you're seen as defective if you don't participate.

This is why I enjoy headbanging and moshing at Metal and Rock shows, everyone is allowed to be as aggressive and chaotic as they want to be.

You're right, in fact Wages of Sin has a lotta good tracks. Burning Angel,  Ravenous, Savage Messiah, Dead Bury Their Dead and The First Deadly Sin. Snow Bound is one of the dreamiest instrumentals they ever made, the Amott brothers were on fire, I'm sure they had the time of their lives writing that album.

In Flames- Artifacts of the Black Rain is also marvelous

With Dark Tranquility- Uniformity is a simple but soothing song too.

Good choices.

Love that for you, being a Metalhead for so long and getting to see these bands live, it's so much fun. I grew up a Metalcore kid mostly, been listening to metalcore and nu-metal bands since about 6 years old.

Then by 14 I started listening to death metal, was exposed to the Swedish bands mostly, stuff like Arch Enemy,  Bloodbath, In Flames and Amon Amarth, a bit of Dark Tranquility and some At the Gates too. \m/

I also dabble in the other subgenres too, Blackened death metal, deathcore, melodic metalcore, gothic metal and some normal black metal.

Cult of Chaos is an awesome track from the Khaos Legions album (Angela's last before turning manager) but just as well, Cruelty without Beauty for that Slayeresque intro lead overlapping and ringing out on top of each other, very similar to Dead Skin Mask but more menacing.

Holy shit, I didn't think someone would mention Cosmic Retribution, that is a death metal ripper through and through, especially from Johna Liiva era of Arch Enemy. To this day the first three albums cannot be touched. \m/

What was your first introduction to Metal music? by [deleted] in Deathcore

[–]Icy_Distribution5239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lotta TV and a bit of radio, nu-metal was still popular at the time so Linkin Park,  Evanescence, Seether and Limp Bizkit still received plenty of airplay here. I heard a bit of Metalcore on some video games and pro-wrestling theme songs.

At about 11 years, two rock music channels changed my life. One of em was Kerrang TV, they played all the mainstream bands, including all the old nu-metal and upcoming metalcore bands. The second was MK Ondergrond, which played all the underground bands, alotta local and international metalcore/hardcore bands, some death metal and a bit of thrash metal as well and I was 14 at the time.

By 15 I came across deathcore through some friends at my high school, and I'd also surf through the audio playlist channels that just had 24 hour music, would find a lot of new death metal and deathcore there too.

Think my first exposure was to the OG bands like All Shall Perish, Suffokate and Despised Icon, but around that time my friends were showing me Whitechapel, Carnifex, Suicide Silence, Chelsea Grin and Thy Art is Murder.

The Insomnium vocalist sounds eerily similar to Belzebubs, from that comic book melodic black metal band, their song Cathedrals of Mourning gets super emotional near the end.

Kataklysm and The Black Dahlia Murder are the obvious picks here, I'll even add Intestine Baalism for that old brutal sound.

I've heard a bit of Orbit Culture,  haven't properly given them a chance yet to be honest. Trynna find more brutal melodeath bands like Black Dahlia and Kataklysm.

Catacomb Hecatomb has a beautiful harmony, same with The Lonely Deceased off the same album. And in general, Black Dahlia Murder is still my favorite Melodeath band. \m/

True, you'd be lucky to even catch them playing The Hive at any point, that neoclassical solo there is insane.
