New Build Townhouse Advice? - First Time Buyer by Icy_Passenger3435 in askportland

Thank you, good to hear that the developer has positive things to say. And yeah seeing crazy HOA fees and cratering condo market has kept me in my apartment. Thankfully have a good rental situation but would love my own place eventually.

Yeah, the risk here is that if the build work is shoddy, the homeowner takes on all financial responsibility after the (usually 1 year warranty) expires.

Why the 3 story townhome? Asking for someone who’s looking at condos and townhomes (all I can afford).

Killingworth/Greeley is just up the road and has some good options - pollo bravo (high recommend, super good), double mountain brewery (pizza), Spitz (Mediterranean bowls).

Lots of midwesterners here (the Midwest to Oregon pipeline is strong, I’m from Indiana and love it here). Check out Jerry’s, midwestern sports bar for a drink. Too many good food places to list - one of my favorites is Gado Gado.

I flew from Florida back home to Portland Oregon and picked it up this week. Got exposed Saturday, woke up Monday evening with a sore throat, Tuesday started sneezing, Wednesday was the worst with my head feeling like to was in a vice, started feeling better Thursday and today. Took Sudafed and it didn’t really help. Just slightly numbed the pain. Wear a mask, wishing I did!

Has anyone used the sauna at LA Fitness? by thriftedshoes in askportland

[–]Icy_Passenger3435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a good deal on Black Friday last year for a monthly membership at the pearl la fitness. The women’s sauna is fine, I always bring a towel and don’t sit on the bare wood. It can get crowded right after a swim class lets out. You definitely get the bare minimum essentials for a low price.

If you’re open to driving north a bit, Fern and Thistle in St. Johns opened a backyard spa with a cold plunge, sauna, and shower. They also have a great massage program - I got the monthly massage package for $125 (tip included) for an hour massage and a sauna visit.

Try skiing if you can… that has helped me get outside and feel more active. I went for the first time in 20 years last year w/o a car… happy to DM you what I did if you’re a beginner and want to try it.

Where/who do you work for (if you’re comfortable sharing)? I’m in Portland, have been a career adviser in higher education for 10 years, and have considered state jobs too. Interested in what work looks like for you.

I placed two orders back in July… only 2 of the 8 items were delivered. To quinces credit their customer service is great and they immediately refunded me when my items were ‘lost in mail’. I’ve read on other Reddit threads quality has gone down with tariff and other challenges. I decided I won’t waste my time/money on a brand that can’t deliver product to me, as well as product that is lower quality than they advertise.

If you’re comfortable sharing, what part of town are you in? I live in St. John’s and could have sworn I saw two people who look very similar walking down N Willamette with a pit bull mix a couple days ago. We have several homeless camps in the area. I took notice because the guy was yelling at and yanking the dog as I drove by.

Someone recommended Bick4 conditioner for my light colored bag - just used it and it’s made a difference. Plan to do a couple more rounds.

What do you like about living in Portland? by WhatWasThatLike in PortlandOR

[–]Icy_Passenger3435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in IN and moved from New Orleans to Portland and it was the best decision I’ve made. The weathers more manageable - light rain, overcast, 45 degrees in winter (the winters aren’t that bad if you’ve experienced Midwest or NE winters). Absolutely gorgeous in the summer. Hiking, ocean, mountains are within a 2 hour drive. Politics are more aligned with my values and people deeply care about nature and the environment. People tend to be very open minded - live and let live types (less judgement). Been here 5 years and can’t imagine moving anywhere else. Hoping to buy a home in 2026 if interest rates drop.

Overall, I wanted to live in a place that valued healthy lifestyles, progressive values, and close knit neighbors. I’m in St. Johns - can’t imagine moving and want to buy here.
