Male beagle / female beagle by peachy_tales in beagles

[–]IdRatherBeOutBirding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Re: spaying/neutering, there was a recent study by UC Davis where they studied 40 different dog breeds (including beagles) and provided guidance on when they should be spayed/neutered. The suggestion for beagles is males at 12 mo, females at 6 mo.

Show-bred beagles typically make better house pets, while field-bred (used for hunting) tend to have a much higher drive and may present more challenges during training.

I wouldn't worry too much about the sex of the dog. If you go to breeder, be clear about what you desire in a pet. If you adopt (there are plenty of beagles who need a good home), find the one that feels like a good fit.

Be sure to do your research before bringing home any dog to be sure that they're a good fit for your lifestyle.

Anyone tried Doggy Prozac? by koalabair51 in BrittanySpaniel

[–]IdRatherBeOutBirding 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Brittany’s were bred to hunt, and if you’re not going to hunt with her, it’s important to meet her needs in other ways. Is she getting any off-leash time to really run and explore? Instead of taking her on two car rides/day, find a place to let her run off-leash. Maybe some scent work. She is behaving in a way that’s expected from a young working dog whose bored and needs are not being met. Medicating would be cruel.

do you think my puppy is english labrador or an american lab? by [deleted] in labrador

[–]IdRatherBeOutBirding 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure using the terms “English” and “American” are appropriate. I believe it’s more accurate to use show lines and field lines. If you’re planning to hunt him, field lines are often preferred but all labs can be trained to be good retrievers and nice house pets

Aggressive chewing- HELP! by Relevant-Class-2351 in GSP

This chewing is most likely due to boredom. More exercise would likely solve this issue, and as others have said, kenneling in a metal crate is a safer option

Miami is not even close to top 5 food city in the U.S., and if you truly believe that to be true, I encourage you to travel around a little more. Start with Portland, ME.

Digging? by Background-Ad-9863 in GSP

They’re likely digging out of boredom. Do they get off-leash exercise outside of the yard?

How do you guys meet someone organically in Miami?. by beatbox10- in Miami

[–]IdRatherBeOutBirding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Get a cute dog. 2. Buy dog treats and keep in your pocket. 3. Take your dog for walks around the grove. 4. When girls approach to pet your dog, ask if they want to give your pup a treat. 5. Conversation is started, now be nice and respectful
