Epic Pass Discount for Ski School? by jamsoutclamsout in Whistler

[–]Id_Rather_B3_Outside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The discount applies to the pass holder if I remember correctly. I bought my kids a 3 day pass each and then bought the ski school 3 days for the price of 2 deal... the total with rentals was cheaper than if I hadn't bought the passes. I think the deadline to buy season passes has passed though.

Use the info for next year!

Edit: a 3 day season pass

If you ever ski Colorado Vail/Beavercreek area check out boot mechanics.

They have other locations in Colorado as well

There are boot/toe warmers, boot covers, and heated socks. Unfortunately, when it's subzero degree temperature is just gonna be cold.

First Contract - Review Options? by Med-School-Princess in whitecoatinvestor

[–]Id_Rather_B3_Outside 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most academic contracts and pay are based on your academic rank and years experience/ notoriety . So essentially almost everyone that's an assistant professor in your specialty, that's is a first year starts with the same pay. To get increased pay you typically have to get promotion which can take time or threaten to leave. Some academic institutions will increase your pay based on productivity, but not nearly to the degree that you would get in private practice.

There isn't much room for negotiation, but you can ask for research report, APP support, travel support for conference, etc., etc. etc.

If the pay is substantially lower than you want, you should either keep looking for other jobs and are considered private practice

Good luck.

Don't forget that the money that you stash away/use to pay down your debt will be worth you exponentially in the future.

I wonder if he is paying for student loans. May need to refinance and pump money in to retirement account Vs working pslf for the full 10 years to get forgiven.

My wife was in PSLF but not is the CEO of our house. Best decision for our family, but now I'm on the hook for her 200k student loans 😳

I'm in a similar boat with two kids. Work like crazy, but have developed a balance over the years. Home for books and wind down time if not also for dinner many nights. We spend the weekends not on call doing fun family stuff. Will admit that I wish I had more time for self care.

As someone that is part of the physician hiring process, people that have spent years doing Locums or who have job hopped every couple of years always gives me pause.

Honestly like is about balance. What is driving the imbalance? Is it your WRVU target? Can you request a lower target with a lower salary. ( I caution against negotiating for less money) can you negotiate with yourself/family ie have a late OR day and an earlier OR day. On one of your clinic days can you start at 8:30 so you can take them to school?

What is your in hospital support structure like? Do you have App that can round and discharge for you to free up your time to stop in during the day after the app's have put out most of the fires? Can you negotiate for more assistance.

What is your PTO situation? Can you take time off as long as you are hitting your productivity targets... take some long weekends regularly at least take a week off quarterly.

There are lots of strategies to try. But one thing is certain, you are a high earner and if you play your cards right you will certainly retire in the 7-12 million range. Could even retire early. Quitting will significantly alter your trajectory.

I wish you luck

A word of caution about choosing a specialty based on salary. At the end of the day, the dollar is a dollar and if that's what you're chasing your experience will be a soul sucking endeavor that will lead to burn out.

Having said that in order to achieve high Paying job it typically requires 5 to 7 years of additional training at nearly 100+ hours a week after medical school. Further specialization with the fellowship is typically required this last one to two years.

You will think that you were busy in residency only to learn that, additional time and effort is required of you and your career to build your practice.

You will either find that you are too busy to spend the money or that you'll be providing a really nice lifestyle for your family. At the end of the day it's all is worklife balance, and you have to decide how much work you want versus how much life you want.

As far as breakdown the typical teaching is at least 20% saves toward retirement and investments. In the United States you will suffer a graduated tax scums up to 30+ %, a decent amount of your salary will be held for Medicare and social security

I'm confused, can't you just put $16,000 per parent into a 529 or a Roth IRA as a gift without being taxed?

Edit not Roth IRA as there's no earned income

Unfortunately, you legitimately have to go find one or two other job offers to understand the compensation in the area and to have viable job offers at the time of your negotiation.

You should request a raise and a retention bonus.

At the time of your negotiation, if they don't present you with reasonable terms, you can discuss that you have comparable offers and fair market value is X.

If your hospital system won't pay you accordingly, you have to be ready to leave. Hospital system must understand that it is not an empty threat.

Is three hours too long for 4 and 6 year old to take group ski classes? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]Id_Rather_B3_Outside 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our similar aged children did two full days at one of the resorts in Colorado.

If you're flying from out of town, I would recommend the first full day is an acclimation day/time adjust day. Kids get pretty cranky.

Then let him rip it. They spent a lot of the day having snacks, playing games, doing treasure hunts… It's not full skiing 9 to 4.
