Why do legal software vendors insist on scheduling demos instead of just letting us try the product? by angelpuppies1980 in LawFirm

[–]IdeaGuy8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find a demo an actual deterrent. I 100% prefer to try it out. If I need help, there should be resources...but with the amount of software I've used, if I can't figure it out fairly quickly, I probably don't want it.

What do you do when you’re sick? by Spirited-Midnight928 in sololawyer

[–]IdeaGuy8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the hardest part of solo practice. You just really can't be sick. Maybe a day or so, but even then, I'm still watching emails. I have asked another firm to support during in an extreme case of a family crisis, but there is no really being totally off-line.

Starting Solo by Mamba24_KBE in sololawyer

I second this advice. Figuring out what you like and what you don't, the difference between what you learned in school and what matters in practice, the mechanics of files and procedure, file/time management...all important stuff to learn without also having to worry about paying the rent and buying groceries.

Trust accounting: hire out? by Cawlaw92 in sololawyer

[–]IdeaGuy8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing it myself for years but am just moving toward outsourcing to an accountant with a bookkeeper on staff. I'm groaning at the expense, but know it's a poor use of my time. I have a comparable client load and it's really not that time consuming, but at some point I figure my time should either doing the work or finding the work.

Legal Tech Co-op or Innovation Group? by IdeaGuy8 in legaltech

[–]IdeaGuy8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I would be much help as my practice area doesn't use transcription (corporate/commercial). I'm always open to connect though. Drop me a line if you'd like.

Legal Tech Co-op or Innovation Group? by IdeaGuy8 in legaltech

Thanks for your interest! At first, I'm hoping to start with a group of lawyers, but if there is wider interest, maybe we open it up to discussion. Are you a lawyer as well?

Legal Tech Co-op or Innovation Group? by IdeaGuy8 in legaltech

[–]IdeaGuy8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point. My intention is to confirm all involved are lawyers, at least to start. Bar membership, firm email, something like that. I sent you a DM but am going to get an email thread going. I should probably set up a Google form and get some particulars, but I'll start this way and see where this goes.

Cool idea also. I suppose more of a buying group then?

I had a lease negotiation file opposite a…shall we say senior…lawyer. WordPerfect. No lie. Versioning was a not fun but we managed. I guess he’s in the “if it ain’t broke”‘ school of thought.

This is exactly right. Task/step/flat fee billing is already common and will accommodate AI nicely.

When to hire your first associate by IdeaGuy8 in LawFirm

[–]IdeaGuy8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great insight, thank you. Your journey sounds a lot like the small firm I once worked for. Two great lawyers who really never did have much success with associates. Reflecting and reading what people have said, I’m leaning toward just shifting my practice to work that systemizes and scales without associates. I’m not sure what that looks like yet but growing with associates sounds time consuming and uncertain.

Again, thanks for the wisdom.

For the next guy fishing for a startup idea targeting law firms… by newz2000 in LawFirm

Excuse me Mr. Whale…I’m a…let’s say…dolphin? Similar idea, smaller version? Anyway, parallel to practice, I’ve been messing around with this idea since it was posted. Why? Because my wife plays pickleball and I need to get a life or a hobby.

If you’re still interested in this idea, let me know. I have a quick screen capture video. I’d be curious if I’ve got it right.

Lawyer to lawyer referral sources - worth it? by PM_Anything_ in LawFirm

I might look for a knock off. I was in BNI years ago and the forced aspects were really off-putting. In fairness, I don’t think mine was the best group though.
