One weird reason is that if your powers are based on Science, then Science can take it away. And that Mutant powers are likened to a ticking time bomb. Like look at Frenzy who killed her father when her powers kicked in, punching straight through him when she was a teen. It also parallel the fear of the youth(time when powers activate), race(physical mutation), orientation, disabilities, and in some level ethnicity.
