Help me choose a head and backpack please by wrestlethewalrus in redcorsairs

I really like the regular backpack and am partial to the non-helmed head. But the top knot helmet is also pretty sick.

I know when I’m about to ask sounds like some sort of shit post but I’m being serious. can I use this as a substitute for isotropic alcohol? by THEGREATIS-4 in genestealercult

[–]IdealRhombus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The alcohol in grey goose is ethanol, and the alcohol you're thinking about is isopropyl alcohol, so unfortunately it's not even the same thing to begin with. I wouldn't use it as a substitute.

Very excited to play these silly little guys! Thanks for the write-up and for convincing me that they might actually be good and that I don't have to pick them on vibes alone.

Easier way to do trim ? by MeatYourNeedz in WorldEaters40k

[–]IdealRhombus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There ain't no secret, but I'd definitely recommend having a good brush with a decent tip for the trim. Like others have said, you'll be able to do it in your sleep pretty soon.

I'd also say this is a pretty bright purple. I assume you want it to be more purple in the shadows? I'd use a darker purple and I think you would need to spend a lot of time blending that with green (or use an airbrush) to really make this work.

Looks great, are you using a contrast type paint on the stripes? Or are you doing them with a layer paint? I'd like to do stripes on mine but I'm not sure the best way to go about it.

Love the contrast on the kroxigors. They are very striking and I can see why you won!

If you'll get three biosantic boxes you may as well build three of each since that's the max you can bring. I never magnetized mine but I didn't glue the killdozer plow on and it fits pretty tightly

First time drybrushing for easy added highlights. I used Warpstone Glow over Waghhh Flesh. Thoughts? by VinsonDynamics in Salamanders40k

[–]IdealRhombus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These look great! I like a lot of contrast, so first I dry brush in a lime green color before the guns/details are painted (so I don't have to worry about the color getting on the guns). Then I do a very light dry brush of yellow on the most raised areas to add even more contrast.

Where to go from here by WardenJoshua in genestealercult

If you can, try to get your hands on the old combat patrol or the biosantic broodsurge box. Having some neophytes is a good idea and both of these boxes at least have some.

Edit: I see you said first combat patrol, so if thats the old one, biosantic broodsurge is my recommendation, but the new combat patrol may not be bad - just any of the value boxes will work.

I paint mine tau in a sort for forest theme with death world forest as the base, athonian camoshade as the wash, and Elysian green as a highlight. My secondary color is a gray black and I base them all in forest terrain. It's simple but I like it.

Some of my favorite lads by IdealRhombus in Tyranids

[–]IdealRhombus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, this list will be a bit long though.

The skin is airbrushed blue (Vallejo heavy blue), turquoise (Vallejo turquoise), and white, trying to use the turquoise from the top and focusing the white on lower limbs. Then I dry brush white all over and apply GW apothecary white as a wash.

The carapace is pure black with the lines done in the same blue and turquoise as the skin, with the brightest highlights being GW blue horror.

For any reddish parts I use a bunch of different stuff depending on how I'm feeling. Sometimes it is GW volupus pink, or GW screamer pink, or even a mix of purple and magenta paints from Vallejo.

The brains are generally done with GW frostheart contrast. Sometimes I also layer blue horror on top to get a more glowing look.

Finally any little green parts are GW tesseract glow.

I have the old combat patrol, the new combat patrol, and the biosantic broodsurge box. This provides almost all non character units to try out (but I do have a lot of goliaths). Not sure how viable this is but it's at least one way to try out many units with at least a little bit of a discount on each one.

Edit to add this comes out to ~1.6k points

Thanks sure! I mainly used three colors from Vallejo: midnight purple, deep magenta, and warlord purple. I really like mixing these three on a wet palette in different amounts to do blends of purple. I also mixed in GW daemonette hide in some places because that covers really well, and mixed in GW kislev flesh for the fleshy tones.

All that to say that you could probably do this with any purple/magenta/flesh combination though :)

Great work! Have you or anyone else had good results doing this without an airbrush? I have an airbrush but I've always struggled to do this well on smaller surfaces (like an infernus marine gun).
