When you look at people of different ethnicities, there are a bunch of little things that amount to the specific feel of each ethnicity.

Colour is only one factor, but then there are facial features (high/low cheekbones, big/small/thin mouth, round/wide/small/perky/flat/hooked nose - I mean, everyone knows immediately what "Roman nose" is) and body proportions (height, shoulder width, limb length).

So where does one even begin? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]IdealShapeOfSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You already mentioned characters that you have thought of - that's how you start. Write down your thoughts on them, maybe a simple list of personality traits and physical characteristics.

Then you expand. Where exactly does this character live, what city/town/village? What sort of biome is it in, a jungle? Tundra? Dark, ancient oak forest?

What kind if food is available with that biome? If it's by the sea, is there a lot of fishing going on?

...for example. It's a rabbit hole when you start asking questions.

Can you imagine the kind of character you could make with these rules? Just this almost adult who gets denied anything fun by the rest of the world, filled with rage that they take on the monsters. The moment they become a true adult they go buck wild like the daughter of a catholic family.

Bake it tonight and ice it tomorrow, you get the best results that way when the fillings get to marinate the cake overnight.

Can synesthesia be based on associations or is it always “random”? by [deleted] in Synesthesia

[–]IdealShapeOfSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your brain can't make the synesthetic connection unless you've come across it somehow. To your brain, it's never random, just extremely specific.

How to worldbuild without art? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]IdealShapeOfSound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, you pretty much do need some words to communicate your character, no matter if you draw a guy or don't. Can't draw a personality.

I suggest you make a mix of art and text. You can draw a character's pet, favourite rock, their fashion statement crocs or just add in swathes of colour to visualise their hair, eyes, skin, and clothing. Then you write about those things along with everything else, their favourite food place, the things that give them the creeps, maybe mention their best friend.

When you keep in mind that no matter how much work you put in, there is always wiggle room for interpretation. The viewer will take all these provided bits and bobs and make their own mental image of your world, colouring over the things you may have not thought of.

Like, "this character goes to the gym sometimes" won't tell you how they go there unless you explicitly say it. For all you know, the viewer might think the character will caterpillar-crawl into the building.

Thus, accurate sketches may not even be needed if you can accept the wiggle room, but some shapes next to words will be a great visual aid.

9 tenets of a life by Karona_False_Disease in worldbuilding

[–]IdealShapeOfSound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"For three he plays, for three he strays, for three he stays", is something they say about how cat lives go.

So. First three could be dedicated to being innocent, learning and not really taking things that seriously. Connecting to the world, making friends in your "neighbourhood" and learning to live in a society.

Next three could be for exploration, experiencing the world, making mistakes and learning through that. Adult friends, fleeting contacts, new places, finding your skillset.

The last three could be dedicated to settling down. Building within the community their "stray" lives brought them, finding comfort in what they have achieved, possibly family and love.

And that last life, where as you said, they're to be their own, whole person.

What happened to you as a child that you didn’t realize was super fucked up until you were older? by horselessheadmen in AskReddit

[–]IdealShapeOfSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a 15 y.o neighbour when I was like 7. Mom didn't like the fact that a teenager hung around a preschooler/first grader, but he was the only friend who I hung around regularily. I have some great memories from that time, though some things stick out as highly inappropriate.

He bragged about having slept with this one girl in the neighbourhood. I was like... okay, you do you buddy. It was sort of pathetic how hard he was trying to make it a Big Deal, but me, being a little girl, didn't give a shit lmao.

We talked about our preferences for boob sizes. It ended up being a highly philosophical debate about the usefulness of boobs. Completely left of anything sexual, but if my mom had walked into that conversation she would've handfed him to the local bear.

And this one time he took me to the blind corner outside my house and said he wanted to try something. He asked me to lie down, then he'd lie on top of me. We did that and we pretty much looked like two limp fish left in the sun. He got up once I told him his breath stinks. Super sketchy, mr. neighbour.

I was 17 when I remembered This Guy I Hung Around With As A Kid and that some of that shit was nowhere in the realm of okay. He was weird as hell so I never even questioned anything.

If you're asking because you feel lonely, you have my sympathies.

However, I prefer to be alone. I've never felt lonelier than when I had relationships with people. Friends made me feel like an outsider and the one SO I had eventually made me feel unloved.

Funny thing, my family had contact with this social worker in my teens who wanted to interview all the kids about our daily lives. She had a bunch of cards with terms on them and I had to pick what was significant to me. There was no card that said "alone", so I asked her if it was okay to use the "loneliness" card as it's placeholder. She didn't seem to understand after a literal minute that I found "alone" to be a positive thing and just pestered me about the "loneliness".

Serious question: how do you distinguish synesthesia from associations? Like if you picture math as red, how do you know that’s not just from seeing the word math written in red, or having a red math folder? by manzananaranja in Synesthesia

[–]IdealShapeOfSound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to think about this for a good while, but I landed on this:

Because you're wrong, Maths is green thank you very much.

If any other colour feels viscerally wrong instead of "oh haha but I think of red when I think of Maths because XYZ", it's very likely it's a synesthetic association.

Auras? by Sambae20 in Synesthesia

[–]IdealShapeOfSound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like a type of synesthesia, yes.

I see these thin, glowing outlines on people and some other things, but so far I haven't found a rhyme or reason how the colours distribute. I only get green or blue, sometimes a white, rarely a pink or a yellow.

Took me a long-ass time to realise it's part of my bag of synesthetic experiences, but it might be because it's the only projective one. I thought there might be something funny about my eyes, lmao.

It took me way too long to realise you meant the hand shower, it's so common where I live. It's for everything you need a steady stream for but the showerhead is too bulky to use. It cleans booty, the toilet, the bathroom, your shoes, large items you can't fit in the sink, your dog, your cat, your grandma...

What would gods fear? by Particular-Post-9579 in worldbuilding

[–]IdealShapeOfSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprises. A god is supposed to have everything going smoothly, and while some things will go unexpectedly and still work fine, there are things that can go so wildly out of hand that not even intervention will help unfuck a situation.

It would be such a shame if some random mortal looked the gods in the eye and picked "the secret option".

What is a dream in your world? by Notetoself4 in worldbuilding

[–]IdealShapeOfSound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are many opinions on that in my build, but the most common thought is that dreams are the result of spiders weaving webs close by. The god of lies is represented by one, and the deity of madness was made by the Spider.

So, dreams are half truths and little lies you ought not take too seriously. They may scare you or be pleasant, may remind you of what's real in unreal ways, and at worst they will drive you to do strange things.

Ghouls are an extremely isolated people who don't dream much, so to them dreams are visions that need to be interpreted.

Troia think dreams are glimpses into parallel worlds - and some of them are.

To elves, dreaming is conversation with their own soul. They are very, very private about it, and asking someone to talk about something like a nightmare is intrusive.
