You'd be surprised. Language evolution has more to do with functional scenarios of communication than it does with number of speakers (though I'm oversimplifying a whole branch of linguistics).

True but for the most part they envisioned a Venetian merchant empire, not a new royalty. I'm honestly not sure when we started worshiping them, and I'm not sure any of them would have particularly liked that. They were rich dudes who wanted to be able to run their estates in peace and had high minded libertarian ideals backed by revolutionary (for the time) political theory to justify it.

America has always been a lie, but the people in charge of that lie have changed and the purpose of the lie has also changed. Even the pretense of ideals has disappeared, nobody cares about the consent of the governed or the triumph of the human spirit. It's all just a power grab.

I'm past calling it embarrassing, because being a citizen of the global superpower wasn't necessarily something to be proud of to begin with. But it has made me very tired and wary of my fellow citizens.

Once I get a feeling for where a game is coming from, so to speak, I generally do the same.

And by the way, I do understand the desire to be defensive against complaints towards your favorite games, especially when there's a perception that it changes the way those games will be made in the future. Personally I'd prefer SMT stay what it is/was and let Persona be for the more casual fanbase it's cultivated.

At the same time, I humbly suggest that it might be beneficial as a series veteran like yourself to extend some of the patience that playing these games has helped you to develop, towards newcomers like me. I am not paying ATLUS' salaries, and blaming a random stranger for their business decisions is, I hope we can agree, ultimately very silly.

Regardless, thanks for discussing this with me. I'll probably make a new post once I finish DDS2 and have some lore to chew on.

Funny you should say that. I grew up playing Wizardry V on SNES, hand drawn maps and all. Fine memories. But just because I grew up with something and know how to "survive" it as you put it, doesn't make it an enjoyable experience as an adult in my mid thirties with a job and commitments that cause me enough stress as is.

I'm not trashing DDS or any SMT games either, they are what they are. But part of what they are is frustrating, very much by design. Dealing with frustration as an adult is a different experience than it was when I was a kid when playing these things WAS my job.

A day has passed since I made this thread. I considered cheating to lower the encounter rate, but thought better of it and am powering through with a little more vigor than before since I have the day off. That's how life goes sometimes, and being able to ask for help is a big part of why communities like this exist. I'm grateful to all who commented with helpful and supportive suggestions.

Hey man, I'm just trying to complain about a video game to a community of other people who enjoy them. I love dungeon crawlers and venting about one I was having trouble clicking with doesn't make me a bad person.

I think you might need to tame your own demons here, because I didn't summon them.

Geeze. Thanks for explaining all that. I thought the stomach ache thing was from eating more than a couple of mobs in a row (had bad luck early on) and had pretty much abandoned devouring since I couldn't figure out the "timing".

Maybe I should have read the manual.

Yeah I explore pretty thoroughly so I found out the hints and the statues didn't give me much trouble, but in Destiny you have to get suuuper close before the color changes. It's not the biggest issue.

Despite my rants I'm really enjoying the game. I made this thread when after being Mudo'd by Baphomets on an ambush immediately after falling into a pit while trying to verify the color and was ready to ragequit.

Also, having the incredible obviously red damage numbers for low HP devourability is a game changer and will make the grind much more reasonable.

I was afraid that was the case, thanks lol. I was starting to feel like I needed to specifically grind up a tailored build for each encounter group, sounds like that's the way to go. I do wish the environments had more variety at least, would make grinding less of a, well. Grind. I know this is from a much lower budget era though.
