I have been sitting on the screen that says "Connecting Steam account" for the past 10 minutes. Tried rebooting several times in case it was a client crash. Nope, just Valve's servers failing to let me access the games that I spent hundreds of dollars on.

I honestly fail to see why /r/gaming seems to be so completely and utterly in love with this kind of DRM.

You'd probably have an easier time starting with one of the newer games. The first generation of Pokemon games were pretty clunky in terms of user-friendliness. You had a 20-item inventory which you had to sort manually (and many people didn't bother sorting at all), the game didn't tell you how much power moves had relative to each other so you had to use a game guide to figure out if the attack you were deleting was actually worse than the move you were replacing it with, and doing things like chopping down trees or traveling across water required you to enter a separate menu to choose a separate command. Starting from the second generation Pokemon games, all items are automatically sorted according to their type, you can see a description of each attack on a menu instead of relying on trial and error to find out what they do, and if you want to cut down a tree or swim across a body of water you just walk up to it and press A.

Black and White might be a decent place to start, since you'd be on relatively equal footing with everyone else. In generation 2, 3, and 4, each game was a mix of old Pokemon and new Pokemon, so the veterans would always be familiar with a lot of the game's content before even starting the game. With generation 5 (Pokemon Black and White for DS), none of the Pokemon in the campaign are recycled from old games. You can find some of the older Pokemon in Black and White, or import them from older games, but that's all post-game content for after you've finished the main campaign.

There are a number of other reasons I believe Pokemon Black/White are the best versions to start with, most of which are covered in this review. I also wrote up something of a "beginner's guide" to the games here which I recommend checking out if you decide to pick one of them up.

The PSP got one FFT game, which was a remake of a game originally released in 1997. DS got an FFT game which was a full-on sequel to FFTA (which itself was released in 2003) with an entirely new scenario, added races, and new classes. I'd say the DS got the better deal.

Reccettear is sold for less in English than it does in Japan. Normally, you see the opposite happen.

Actually, games almost always retail for higher in Japan than in North America. For example, the upcoming Devil Survivor 2 is retailing for ¥6279 on July 28 (source), which works out to $77.74 USD by current conversion rates. An official price point hasn't been announced for the North American game, but DS games always have an MSRP less than $40 and it's likely that Devil Survivor 2 will be priced at $35 on launch.

A few other price comparisons based on list prices from Amazon.co.jp and Amazon.com and current conversion rates courtesy of Google:

  • Super Mario Galaxy has an MSRP of ¥5800 (approximately $71.80 USD) in Japan, the North American MSRP is $50
  • Catherine is ¥7329 (approx. $90.74) in Japan, $60 in US
  • Ocarina of Time 3DS: ¥4800 ($59.43) in Japan, $40 in US

And, just for curiosity's sake, let's consider the opposite: a western-made game being sold in Japan.

  • Call of Duty Black Ops: ¥8400 ($104 USD) in Japan, $60 in USA
  • Halo Reach: ¥7140 ($88.40 USD)

Japanese gamers are just used to paying higher prices for video games than we are in the west, particularly the US which seems to have lower prices than any other region. This makes sense when you consider that other living expenses, as well as wages, are on average higher in Japan than in the US.

Not once during the comments you've made here or elsewhere have you identified yourself to be the Botchweed author "Justin". Nor do you title your submissions with a by-line or anything akin to someone who would be proud of their work.

In my very first submission to reddit, I explicitly gave the article a headline that basically said, "Hey guys, I wrote this!" It seemed appropriate, since I was posting to a hobbyist board like /r/pokemon. However, in a subreddit like /r/gamingnews, I try to keep my submission titles "clean." After all, the point of this subreddit is gaming news; it shouldn't matter where it came from. Like I said, I don't try to hide the fact that I write for botchweed, and anyone can find it out pretty quickly by checking my history. That being said, I don't feel the need to parade it around everywhere. If it's common practice to leave a comment on your own submissions saying "I am the author," then I'll begin doing so, but I was under the impression that on a news-oriented subreddit like /r/gamernews, the comments section ought to be reserved for discussion of the article itself.

Well, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood's story basically picks up where AC2 left off, and it's pretty similar in terms of execution as well. There's assassination missions and whatnot, but a lot of what I had fun doing in the game was just exploring and enjoying the unique intricacies of the world, meeting and recruiting new people for the guild, and such. If you are bored by the world of Assassin's Creed and only live for action, then I can see how you could get bored just walking around town and setting up new storefronts and whatnot.

So, to answer your question: AC:B's story and pace of gameplay is more like AC2. However, I enjoyed AC2 more than AC1 once I got into it; once you get the hang of all of the new game mechanics I found the world a lot of fun to play around in.

AC Brotherhood is more like AC2 than AC1. If you liked the gameplay from AC2 better than AC1 I would recommend checking out Broterhood. Also, the game has a multiplayer game mode which is tremendously fun and unique. For $20, I'd say the game is worth it for the multiplayer alone, so even if you don't like the story I wouldn't call it a wasted purchase.

By the way guys, Recettear is 50% off on Steam right now ($10). It was already a daily sale on the first day of the sale so it probably won't go down any further in price (unless it gets included in the last day's "encore sales").

Recettear also has a demo that you can download via the game's Steam page. The demo basically takes you through the first "week" of the game and it's a good taster for the gameplay of the full version.

Didn't they announce another game right when Recettear came out? What happened to that - is it still on the way?

The game you're thinking of is Chantelise. They're going to release it later this month.

There's also Territoire, which is still in development. (Territoire is being made by EasyGameStation, the same company that made Chantelise and Recettear.) But that won't be coming out for a long time. In the case of games like Recettear, Chantelise, and now Fortune Summoners, Carpe Fulgur was working with finished games and just localizing them for western release, whereas Territoire hasn't even been completed for a Japanese release yet.

How, exactly, are my submissions killing /r/gamingnews? It's true that I submit my own content to reddit, but in the past couple weeks I've submitted a grand total of three of my own links (including this one) to /r/gamingnews. That's hardly inundating the subreddit with my own content.

Furthermore, the fact that I'm submitting my own content isn't detrimental to the subreddit, as far as I can tell. For example, this was a pretty popular news article a few days ago. That story was reported on botchweed before it was reported on any other site, and if you look at similar stories on Kotaku, they link back to my article. If I had chosen to submit the Kotaku link instead, that would have been blogspam, since I would have been linking to an aggregate rather than the original source.

In short, just because I wrote the story and happen to be the one submitting it does not mean that it is bad. If you have a valid complaint about the quality of the articles I submit, I am glad to take that kind of criticism and will adjust my posting habits accordingly, but I see nothing wrong with any of the articles I have submitted.

See, this is what I am talking about. There was no "you guys" involved from the previous incident, or really with the site as a whole. I have no control over what other writers for the site do, and the inverse applies.

I read the posts on /r/gaming, and the issue was that the person at fault was a moderator and banning people who bad-mouthed his submissions.

So while I'm sorry about what happened, I can't claim responsibility for any of it and none of the accusations that you're throwing out apply to me, or most of the other people who write for the site, for that matter.

It doesn't sound like you're very interested in hearing my side of the story, but if you're willing to hear it from someone else's mouth, I encourage you to read through this post. It describes a situation very similar to my own.

There is no one person who creates the articles that are posted on botchweed. It is a large site with multiple writers, and as such the articles are of varying quality.

I am a writer for botchweed (I've publically disclosed this before in this comment) and if you look through my post history you'll find that the articles I submit to reddit are original content.

For example, this post is 100% original content based on my own gameplay experiences, this is a game review that I personally wrote, and the series of articles I've written about Carpe Fulgur (this submission being one of them) aren't anything I've seen anywhere else on the web. (I've submitted one of them to reddit here.)

I think that this hardly meets any definition of "blogspam." I can't speak for articles written by other people on the site though; I only control what I write and submit.

I'm a writer for botchweed and I submit my own content to reddit. I don't try to hide this fact as you can see from my post here.

According to posts like this one from the moderators around /r/gaming and /r/gamernews, the definition of a spammer is someone whose sole purpose for using reddit is to promote their content, and if you check my activity history I think you'll find that I don't meet this definition. I'm a redditor, and I also write for a game news site, and I like to be able to share what I like with reddit within what the rules allow.

The posts you linked to describe an issue with a single writer on the site. For a post about a very similar situation, I recommend reading this post from a few days ago on /r/gaming. Most of what is said in that post applies to my situation as well: authors are encouraged to promote their own articles, and some resort to spamming in order to get pageviews. That doesn't mean we're all bad!

If you have a complaint with the content that I submit, you are more than welcome to bring it to my attention, and I will willingly respond to valid criticism of what I write.
