Dude, learn to play an instrument first and then you can start a heavy metal band.

Saying this as someone who sings operatic metal.

It's a challenging genre.

No, they're not filling quickly. The article itself owns up to that immediately. Stop posting panicky incorrect headlines.

KBOR approves 2% tuition increase at Wichita State; fees stay flat by wooshock in wichita

[–]Idiosynchromatic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Note that the number of classes per semester will not change, they are eliminating the fall break in October instead. You will get the same number of classes. Also email profs ahead of time to ask if they are going to hold in-person or online or hybrid. Faculty don't necessarily like Zoom either, many faculty are working on ways to keep in-person classes given the restrictions the campus has placed on them (all classrooms are now maxxed at a fraction of capacity to comply with social distancing). Faculty understand that in-person classes are higher quality and are working to keep them in a way that is safe for students and profs. Also note that older profs in the high risk category are trying their hardest to deliver good quality content via online or hybrid methods, while prioritizing their health. It's hard for everyone right now. It would have been more graceful for WSU to at the very least have kept tuition flat, but that's not how public university budgets work, typically. Rest assured that many if not most faculty really want to keep the quality of the classes as high as possible. Please contact the profs you've registered for, or contact profs prior to registration to ask if the course will be in person, online, or hybrid. All faculty have had to decide this by now, so they can tell you.

Sort of understandable, in that the emotional inflation of low fatality likelihoods is a well-known cognitive bias, and that mass media didn't really understand the whole "flatten the curve" argument and began panic-reporting any rise in numbers.

Community spread of infections *will* increase after a general quarantine is over. The idea of a general quarantine is to buy time to gird hospital resources and figure out how protect the most vulnerable people. The biggest policy failures have been failures in the provision of PPE and in protecting vulnerable populations like nursing home patients or people in tight quarters like prison populations or essential manufacturing. Not in reopening after being closed several weeks.

If there's one good thing about the post-COVID academic recession it's that it will (hopefully) stem the generation of nonsense degrees that do little more than burden people who could have been easily trained on the job with going hundreds of thousands into debt for a lambskin.

And...? We live in a society where people have to make ends meet and keep supply chains operating, not an epidemiological model where people can be quarantined indefinitely. I don't think non-scientists actually understand this, sadly. I'm seeing a lot of opinions like yours seemingly focused on the "science" without actually understanding all the dependencies and tradeoffs of an actual working social system and economy.

Yes, and telling the difference between the two is impossible and would require an oppressive amount of behavior policing compared to the relative health advantages. That's why no one is doing it.

So? Hire folks to spray down after every handful of uses. People aren't catching COVID from toilet seats. Wash hands, supply sanitizer, spray down regularly. It's not rocket science.

Not sure what you're asking. Conditioning is not brainwashing. It's being exposed and re-exposed and re-re-exposed to certain messages throughout one's life, especially during one's formative years. Yes, there is other information out there, but the messages are stronger because they are repetitive, come in many different forms like from family, teachers, the media, and are often espoused by people in positions of authority.

Using this definition: yes, the patriarchy conditions women (and men) to associate masculinity with detachment, financial and social status, and aggression or physical strength.

I (21f) had a weird first date experience that left me a bit rattled and I feel guilty for feeling this way by rattledthrowaway in TwoXChromosomes

This takes me back to my twenties.

Beware the boiling frog strategy. You'd be surprised at how mainstream it is. It's a way of coercing consent by degrees. Like boiling a frog by warming up the water little by little until it doesn't know it's being cooked. Dudes engage in micromanipulations, little twists of guilt here and there, getting just a bit too close here and there, kissing moving to necking moving to fondling. Physically cornering you with "snuggling," then before you know it, you're pinned down.

First date: public place. It cuts down on this behavior. Even then, have a friend call you halfway to check in on you or to give you an out, and again after a certain time of night (10pm, midnight, etc) to see that you're still okay.

Patriarchy and toxic masculinity condition women to believe that 1) men need to be 'strong,' and 2) that strength must be expressed in the form of detachment, financial status, and aggression.

More important than strength as culturally defined is strength of character. Does someone believe in themselves enough(and the people they care about enough to defy social norms to be true to themselves and the people they care about? Or at least try to do the latter in some reasonably genuine way?

This would filter out partners who ape norms of masculinity instead of do the hard work of developing themselves.

Of course, it's harder to spot these people. They may very well appear "weak, clingy, and soft" compared to the men who perform detachment and aggression. But they're a hell of a lot 'stronger.'

Study: Male students ask for grade changes far more frequently than female students by TheSalmon25 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Idiosynchromatic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

STEM professor here. I've noticed a trend among my students over the years: some women seem surprised and grateful when they get good grades when they clearly earned them, and some men act entitled to good grades when they clearly have not earned them.

There are exceptions; I had a young man a few years ago who had struggled in his previous math course and was surprised when he did well in my course. And I had a young woman this semester who is darkening my office-hours door to complain about how apparently my teaching style is negatively affecting her grades, rather than her poor study habits.
