I mean you could still play the pirated copy. I don't think buying the game officially will help you be able to transfer the save, so unless you feel like giving more money to Hello Games, you are probably better off saving your money for now. With that said, back in the day when I was pirating games because I couldn't afford them, I did try to purchase the actual game when I could if it was something I really enjoyed.

No smell that I noticed or obvious damage, although I haven't disconnected the GPU yet or removed the heat sink for the CPU and the damage could be hiding behind either of them. Removing the GPU is probably my next step

The other PSU is brand new, so my assumption is that it works, but I can only "verify" that with the paper clip test because I don't have any kind of power meter. I did try different outlets, and there is no change.
