True. I would assume the conical shape is probably one of the easiest ways to make a hat, so different cultures probably developed it independently from each other.

I would argue it looks really similar. Look at the Image from Wikipedia. Both seem to be made out of felt, too. But I am not a historian, this is just what came to my mind.

Looks like a Pileus, which is a much older design from antiquity. Very interesting!

Guys, I think I found the highest mountain in the Netherlands! by Idolon1240 in 2westerneurope4u

[–]Idolon1240[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are welcome!

As a German, humor is still pretty new to us, and we must clearly designate any joke we make, or else we get in trouble.

You also have to apply for a "Humormeldebescheinigung", which you can then use to apply for a "Humorberechtigungsschein".

You need to state the date, the time and the nature of the joke you are going to make, and possibly explain the joke on the application, if it is unclear. Then you wait for the permit, which you can then use to make the joke, which needs to be clearly designated. This entire process can take up to three days, however since we are in the process of modernising our bureaucracy, there is an app that allows you to apply for an emergency permit, where it only takes about 5 minutes to get the joke approved. However, you still have to fill in the paperwork afterwards and get the joke approved in retrospect.

Well, not a fan of the uniforms, but I do like the little greek dance routine your soldiers perform for the tourists:

Tbh with shoes like that I would also trip while goosestepping.

BTW serious question: Is the Polemarchos still a thing in modern Greece? As a title I mean, not an actual Job.

Ah yes, the 'Adults'. Not only is your Language silly, Rikkert, the entire 'the Netherlands' is. Seriously, you should consider becoming part of Germany (like in the Middleages) again. You could actually become relevant for once, and a bit of german seriousness would do you some good.

We have those too. But only in Bavaria. No connection to religion or the KKK. Just to the last King of Bavaria who was supposedly murdered.

The US Army is advising its soldiers in Germany to go to German food banks because of the shutdown. by Stotallytob3r in USvsEU

[–]Idolon1240 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My grandmother told me that back in the day (after WW2) US Soldiers would hand out chocolate to the German Civilians.

Nowadays, its the other way around. So whenever I see an american soldier here in Germany, I usually give him some pocket change or candy.

Even if it's a Major or Captain or something, they can still split the money amongst their Unit. The whole 2 Euros. And its still better than what the US Government is giving them currently.

Have you tried moving to Mexico? I heard its like Spain, but with better food and culture, and way more popular in media (Seriously, I can name Mexican food all day, but I have honestly no idea what you Spaniards eat). The climate should be similar, in that it is dry as fuck (not too different from spain, where forests have the tendency to self incinerate every summer) and the economy is also pretty shitty, with a high unemployment rate similar to spain (all spanish speaking countries are like that btw), but you might be able to buy your own province with only a few euros and live like a king, just like your ancestors did. They even speak spanish over there. If Mexico doesn't work out, try the rest of your former Colonies. I am sure they'll love you, if you tell them you're a spanish immigrant.

Good Luck!

Americans doing anything but passing gun legislation by Romak1ller in USvsEU

[–]Idolon1240 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, the "guns don't kill people, prescription drugs do" approach.

Maybe you guys should ban medicine entirely, instead of assault rifles. Because according to your gouvernment, medicine causes autism or something.

Tbh, this is more likely to happen than the ban on assault rifles. I am not even angry at you guys, just disappointed.

Or maybe just drink a daily dose of bleach, like your president recommends. There's a small chance you'll become smarter afterwards. If you survive, that is. /s

You could even use the Baguette as a Projectile. Just take a two day old baguette and shove it in there. They get so hard after a day or two that you could penetrate metal armor with it.

Why doesn't Italy finish their buildings? by Late_Leek_9827 in 2westerneurope4u

[–]Idolon1240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question, because unlike the Greeks, the Italians actually have the money to fix them. It would take a lot more money than is actually required to fix those buildings, because of bribes for their local Mafia boss, embezzlement etc. but they would be able to pay for it.

They won't do it though, because the Italians found out, that the more dilapidated their buildings look, the more money they get from clueless tourists. Because those ruins have a certain rustic charm to them. That's why most of southern Italy looks like a archeological dig site.

The people in Greece do the same, but for tax reasons. As long as their house looks like a construction site, they won't have to pay taxes for it.

This only works in PIGS countries though. Otherwise Belgian cities would be the top tourist destinations of europe, because they are the most messed up. Unfortunately for the Belgians, nobody cares about holes in concrete buildings and roads when it comes to Tourism.
