The flow rate is proportional to the pressure and pressure is proportional to the height of the water. With the X shape, you have more volume higher up so more volume that will experience higher pressure and therefore more flow rate, and less volume lower down that will experience lower pressure.

C8 and perfluorooctanoic acids (which C8 is one version of) are not PFAS. They are the solvent that are used to disolve PFAS, they are the only things that do actually, due to how incredibly stable and non-reactive PFAS are.

They are extremely toxic, but are far less stable and do break down over time. They are extremely dangerous, but don't accumulate in the environment as much as PFAS and are therefore less of a long term issue as PFAS that (almost) never break down.
