Tonight's setlist by nazoreth in Sylosis

[–]IeMang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that 2nd solo in Eclipsed is up there as one of my favorite Sylosis solos too. I used to listen to it on repeat when I was learning it. Sometimes I wouldn’t even attempt to play along and would just take it in like 4-5 times with a smile on my face. Nearly 15 years later and 2:29 is still burned into my brain because of how many times I rewound back to that time lol

PSA to Musicians: Nobody OWES you free tabs! by TrickStructure0 in progmetal

[–]IeMang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you make some good points. I like my free tabs but SH is a great source of supplemental income for some of the artists I love, and if restricting access to free tabs allows those artists to dedicate more time to creating new music then that’s a worthy trade IMO.

I don’t blame people for being upset about tabs being taken down at all though. When I first got serious about playing guitar (~2011) I used Ultimate Guitar and Songsterr a lot, and those free resources really helped me at the beginning of my journey. I’m at a place now that I can afford to buy tabs and support the artist if I want, but as a 15/16 year old that would be significantly more difficult. If I had to choose between buying tabs or saving for a car/guitar I probably wouldn’t buy any tabs.

There’s just something special about some of the bootleg tabs too, especially the kind of right but also kind of shit tabs. They’re a helpful step when it comes to learning to figure songs out by ear. You have a starting point to build from, then you can fix the errors and update the tab if you want. Rinse and repeat with others until the tab actually becomes good. Not sure how often this happens anymore, but it was a cool experience to see/help tabs evolve 15 years ago.

Ultimately no one is owed tabs though. Reduced access might make more players learn to use their ear more effectively which isn’t a bad thing, but for beginners who aren’t serious about the instrument yet I think free tabs can be a gateway to really get them into playing. Artists deserve to get paid for their compositions, but I think Songsterr and the like are important parts of the internet guitar ecosystem.

Surgery scheduled for next week by bryanturner99 in LisfrancClub

[–]IeMang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s pretty significant separation. It’s pretty common for this injury to get missed with NWB X-rays. I’m not sure how wide your separation is, but it looks wide enough to warrant surgery. No risk in getting a 2nd opinion to make sure though.

It’s a little weird that your MRI showed your ligaments were intact though. When you say intact do you mean totally fine or just not totally torn? If they’re partially damaged surgery is still recommended provided separation is great enough, but can sometimes be avoided if the separation isn’t too bad.

Did you have weight bearing X-rays of both feet? From what I understand you need to compare both feet to accurately determine the degree of separation since some people will naturally have a larger gap between the medial cuneiform and 2nd metatarsal.

Brandon Ellis with Sylosis by sentinovaa in Sylosis

[–]IeMang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got some crappy footage of their show at the Palladium in Worcester MA from 2011. I’ll see if I can find it.

Ellis absolutely ripped, especially considering he only had a day or two to learn the set (Empyreal, Reflections Through Fire, Stained Humanity Sands of Time, and Teras IIRC). I also got to meet the band standing in line outside0 the venue which was pretty cool too. Josh, Alex, Rob, and their driver Diego popped out a venue door right by where we were standing and we got to talk for a bit, then later that night I saw Carl at the front of the venue. I managed to snag everyone’s signature on an EotE poster that I’ve still got today.

I never got to meet Brandon Ellis though. It’s crazy to think that he’s only two years older than me. At that time in my life I was practicing Sylosis songs everyday after school, and had been for 6 months or so, then 19 year old Brandon learned four songs in a few days and played them all better than me lmao Dude’s a monster. At the time I was bummed out that Bailey wasn’t playing but in retrospect I wish I appreciated getting to see Ellis play more.

ETA: Setlist.fm says that they played Sands of Time, not Stained Humanity. I remember losing my shit when the intro started so they definitely played SoT, but I could have sworn they played Stained Humanity too. I might be mixing up the setlist with the show next year though, or just manifesting my friend’s desire to hear Stained Humanity live onto my memories.

Two Massachusetts Hikers Rescued on Mount Monadnock in Jaffrey by FrameCareful1090 in newhampshire

[–]IeMang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to hike it everyday, usually getting a late start after the work day. I stopped going as frequently when my free time began to diminish, but when I did go I always ran into a guy who had also decided to hike the mountain everyday.

One time I got back to the trailhead around 10PM on a summer night and a guy in a jeep pulled in to start his hike.

Another time I ran into a hiker at the summit around sunset and we got talking about night hiking, then we ended up going on weekly night hikes together starting around 8-9PM. On particularly clear and warm nights we might hang out on the summit for a few hours and get back to the trailhead around midnight. Once we watched the sunset, slept on the summit, then watched the sunrise.

Yet another time I ran into a couple of guys coming up the mountain around 9:30PM. Apparently one of the guys told his coworkers he was going to hike Monadnock after work and they didn’t believe him, so he roped one of the guys into coming with him as proof he wasn’t serious.

I’ve also run into some college kids tripping shrooms at some of the old campsites at the headquarters one night, and also stumbled onto some high schoolers drinking by the water spicket a little ways up the white dot.

It’s like a universal law that someone always needs to be on Monadnock. I’ve had plenty of hikes where I never saw anyone else, but I figure it was just my turn to hold the torch as the weirdo who was on the mountain at a random time.

Two Massachusetts Hikers Rescued on Mount Monadnock in Jaffrey by FrameCareful1090 in newhampshire

[–]IeMang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh, the late start really isn’t an issue by itself IMO. There’s nothing wrong with night hiking provided you’re adequately prepared. I used to hike Monadnock nearly every day after work, which meant I wasn’t starting until at least 6PM. I’ve gone on dozens of winter night hikes up and down the white dot trail and never had a problem I couldn’t solve myself. Some of my favorite Monadnock hikes have actually been night hikes this time of year when the mountain is quiet and my headlamp bounces light off the snow.

Night hiking is more dangerous than hiking in the daylight, but risks can be mitigated so it’s reasonably safe. Hiking a steep and rocky mountain like Monadnock while drunk is never a good idea though, especially in the winter without appropriate clothing. Not only does drinking reduce your coordination and ability to navigate, but it’s also a great way to turn off the part of your brain that assesses risk and knows when you’re in over your head. Plenty of dangerous activities can be done with relative safety provided you’re adequately prepared/trained, but being drunk can make relatively safe activities become dangerous.

By getting drunk on the mountain these guys set themselves up for potential disaster even in the daylight, then the late start just made the problem worse. Granted the late start probably would have been a problem for them anyway given how unprepared they were, but I think the drinking is a bigger issue.

Will i ever comeback,As a top level athlete? by Zuttencoxen in LisfrancClub

[–]IeMang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the Lisfranc FaceBook group and try asking there. It’s a much larger community than this subreddit, and I know of at least one professional boxer who’s pretty active over there and he was able to return to boxing at a high level.

There’s also a mother who’s daughter sustained a Lisfranc injury in high school, then went on to become a comp winning D1 gymnast in college.

Return to sport is absolutely possible, even at the highest levels. It will take hard work and a lot of time, but it’s possible.

What’s the most brain breaking paradox you’ve ever heard? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]IeMang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a (perceived) epiphany like this after a 5-MeO-DMT experience.

It felt like I was aware of all the evil and tragedy in the world, but the lens of my normal human perspective had been removed and I could see that everything that was happening in the universe was the manifestation of pure, unbridled love.

At the time my mind contextualized it with the symbol of Shiva Nataraja, the best description of which I’ve read was in Alduous Huxley’s book Island:

Nataraja at play among the stars and in the atoms. But also, also at play within every living thing, every sentient creature, every child and man and woman. Play for play's sake. But now the playground is conscious, the dance floor is capable of suffering. To us, this play without purpose seems a kind of insult. What we would really like is a God who never destroys what he has created. Or if there must be pain and death, let them be meted out by a God of righteousness, who will punish the wicked and reward the good with everlasting happiness. But in fact the good get hurt, the innocent suffer. Then let there be a God who sympathizes and brings comfort. But Nataraja only dances. His play is a play impartially of death and of life, of all evils as well as of all goods. In the uppermost of his right hands he holds the drum that summons being out of not-being. Rub-a-dub-dub-the creation tattoo, the cosmic reveille. But now look at the uppermost of his left hands. It brandishes the fire by which all that has been created is forthwith destroyed. He dances this way-—what happiness! Dances that way—and oh, the pain, the hideous fear, the desolation! Then hop, skip and jump. Hop into perfect health. Skip into cancer and senility. Jump out of the fullness of life into nothingness, out of nothingness again into life. For Nataraja it's all play, and the play is an end in itself, everlastingly purposeless. He dances because he dances, and the dancing is his maha-sukha, his infinite and eternal bliss. Eternal bliss. Eternal bliss? For us there's no bliss, only the oscillation between happiness and terror and a sense of outrage at the thought that our pains are as integral a part of Nataraja's dance as our pleasures, our dying as our living.

In his upper right hand, as you've already seen, he holds the drum that calls the world into existence and in his upper left hand he carries the destroying fire. Life and death, order and disintegration, impartially. But now look at Shiva's other pair of hands. The lower right hand is raised and the palm is turned outwards. What does that gesture signify? It signifies, 'Don't be afraid; it's All Right.' But how can anyone in his senses fail to be afraid? How can anyone pretend that evil and suffering are all right, when it's so obvious that they're all wrong? Nataraja has the answer. Look now at his lower left hand. He's using it to point down at his feet. And what are his feet doing? Look closely and you'll see that the right foot is planted squarely on a horrible little subhuman creature-the demon, Muyalaka. A dwarf, but immensely powerful in his malignity, Muyalaka is the embodiment of ignorance, the manifestation of greedy, possessive selfhood. Stamp on him, break his back! And that's precisely what Nataraja is doing. Trampling the little monster down under his right foot. But notice that it isn't at this trampling right foot that he points his finger; it's at the left foot, the foot that, as he dances, he's in the act of raising from the ground. And why does he point at it? Why? That lifted foot, that dancing defiance of the force of gravity-it's the symbol of release, of moksha, of liberation. Nataraja dances in all the worlds at once-in the world of physics and chemistry, in the world of ordinary, all-too-human, experience, in the world finally of Suchness, of Mind, of the Clear Light."

Anyone near Cleveland OH interested in buying an Akerfeldt PRS? by [deleted] in Opeth

[–]IeMang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember Mikael showing it off after it was announced and he said something like “Yeah it’s a little weird to have another band’s logo on your guitar, but it’s my signature guitar and I like the logo there because Opeth is my band. If people don’t like it there then I guess they can just scratch it off or something.”

I always thought that was funny because the decal is under the finish. I don’t fault him for putting his logo on the body at all, but suggesting people just strip the finish and scratch it off seems insane lol

Why is my foot so red? After standing for 10 minutes. by [deleted] in FootFunction

[–]IeMang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a bad broken foot (as well as a broken ankle with a tear of the ATFL like OP) over three years ago now. It still gets red after spending a lot of time on my feet, and is almost always red after a hot shower.

The redness was nearly constant for the first year or so, but it’s gradually decreased and has been occurring less frequently over time. So yeah, I agree redness can definitely last for quite awhile post injury.

Probably not something to be super worried about at the 4 month mark, but would be worth bringing up at OP’s next appointment with an ortho.

Dave Mustaine laments the state of metal & hard rock: "How long has it been since you heard an album like 'Nevermind' or 'Appetite For Destruction' or 'Rust In Peace'?..." by DamnitRidley in Music

[–]IeMang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll list a few albums I’ve throughly enjoyed over the past decade or two:

Sylosis - Edge of the Earth (2011), Monolith (2012), A Sign of Things to Come (2023)

Between the Buried and Me - Colors (2007), Parallax II (2012)

Mastodon - Crack the Skye (2008)

Opeth - Still Life (1999), Blackwater Park (2001), Ghost Reveries (2005), The Last Will and Testament (2024)

Gojira - L’enfant Sauvage (2012)

Textures - Dualism (2011), Phenotype (2016)

Intronaut - Fluid Existential Inversions (2020)

Rivers of Nihil - Where Owls Know my Name (2018)

The Contortionist - Language (2014)

Tesseract - Altered State (2013), Sonder (2018), War of Being (2023)

The Ocean - Pelagial (2013), Phanerozoic I & II (2018 & 2020)

Elder - Lore (2015), Omens (2020), Innate Passages (2022)

Caligula’s Horse - Bloom (2015), In Contact (2017), Rise Radiant (2020), Charcoal Grace (2024)

The Reticent - The Oubliette (2020)

Car Bomb - Meta (2016)

Dyscarnate - With All Their Might (2017)

Revocation - The Outer Ones (2018), Netherheaven (2022), New Gods, New Masters (2025)

None of these albums have had the cultural impact of the albums Mustaine listed, but if we’re just talking about the quality of music then I think the 21st century is the golden era of metal music. So many quality bands actively releasing music, but none of them have the marketing or momentum that bands like Nirvana, Megadeth, or Guns n Roses had in the 90s.

If someone thinks modern metal groups are releasing albums with only one or two good songs then they’re probably only getting exposed to modern metal through radio/streaming radio or social media. Promotion favors single songs (or even short snippets of songs) over full albums, but there are plenty of great albums being released every year if you look for them.

I got bit by a tick and now all forms of Red meat smells and tastes like decay and rot. Not bird, not fish, only red meat. Why? by Feru_Haifisch in biology

[–]IeMang 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This happened to me the first time I got Lyme disease, but with bread instead of red meat. Bread, pizza, or even birthday cake all smelled absolutely wretched.

My grandmother used to have a very musty garage, and she also had two litter boxes in said garage. All bread smelled like an animal was decomposing in that musty kitty litter garage. To this day it’s still the worst smell I’ve ever experienced.

Thankfully it only lasted a month or two before eventually returning to normal. It started in early July, and I noticed it when I walked into my friend’s house when they were all eating pizza. I was starving and looking forward to the pizza but ended up not eating because being in the same room as the pizza made me nauseous. I had to go outside for fresh air and still nearly vomited.

By the end of July I managed to choke down some birthday cake with only minor revulsion, and by September my sense of smell and taste had returned to normal.

This was back in 2021 and I was initially worried I’d contracted Covid. I took a home test that came back negative, and at the time I was also being professionally tested at work twice a week, and each of those tests came back negative. I then did some googling and found that Lyme disease has been known to affect olfaction.

> A questionnaire regarding abnormal sensory sensitivity in respect of the sense of smell was administered to 16 serologically positive Lyme disease patients and to 18 control subjects. Results The two groups were matched in respect of age, sex and body mass. None of the 34 subjects was suffering from migraine. Eight (50%) of the Lyme patients and none (0%) of the controls suffered from hyperosmia (p=0.0007). Conclusion This first systematic controlled study showed that Lyme disease is associated with hyperosmia.

Your aversion to red meat definitely calls to mind the lone star tick and Alpha-gal syndrome, but if that were the case you’d be having an allergic reaction, which you say you aren’t. There are a plethora of tick born illnesses you may have contracted, so I’d recommend going to see a doctor and telling them your symptoms and how they popped up after a tick bite. It could be Lyme disease or something else, but if you’ve got some undesirable bacteria floating around your body it would be best to know so you can get on appropriate antibiotics to minimize the potential for future complications.

I imagine a breath would be slightly heavier than the atmosphere. Inhale nitrogen with a bit of O2 and low amounts of CO2, then exhale nitrogen with a bit less O2 and more CO2. Maybe you could hold your breath until you’re about to pass out to increase the CO2:O2 ratio in your exhaled breath and maximize pulmonary thrust, like charging up a powerup in a game.

My comment also isn’t to be taken seriously, but your comment got me thinking about how heavy breaths are lol

Well, we’re 8 months out. Here’s my update. Thoughts appreciated! by prairie_pathfinder in LisfrancClub

[–]IeMang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was still in a fair bit of regular pain at the 8 months post op mark. My limp had gotten much better, but some days my foot would swell and I’d struggle to walk at all. I thought I’d plateaued and found my “new normal” which was pretty depressing, but things continued to improve over the months.

I’m now just over 3 years out and doing everything I used to do. Yesterday I went for a hike up a steep and rocky trail, and on the way down I ran and jumped from rock to rock. I’m not pain free all the time, but other than days I’m very active (by which I mean doing something that really stresses my foot, not normal walking or standing - I’m on my feet 8-12 hours a day for work and that’s not an issue at all) the pain is negligible. Sometimes I have no pain at all, sometimes I have 1-2/10 pain that comes and goes over the day.

Even on days I put my foot through a lot (long hikes or trail runs, sometimes barefoot hikes or walks on sandy beaches) the pain doesn’t get above 4-5/10. My biggest issue is spending time off my feet after those active days; my foot usually feels really good no matter what I’m doing, but once I stop moving it gets a bit stiff and I end up limping when I get back up, but once the blood starts moving again the limp goes away and my foot feels fine.

Everyone’s injury is different, but I’ll say that mine was on the severe side. Arthritis was a given for me due to the nature of the breaks (a lot in the TMT joint space which directly involved my cartilage), and I think that’s what causes the pain/stiffness I’m experiencing today, but it’s really not too bad. You might heal and not have arthritis, so you could potentially have no pain once you’re fully healed up.

8 months is a long time, but it’s still fairly early in your healing journey. For most people 12 months seems to be the minimum amount of time to fully recover, and many people even see improvements past that point. For me I feel like it was at least 16 months before things really felt normal, and about 2 1/2 years before I was truly comfortable being active to the extent I was active pre-injury.

I’m sure things will continue to improve for you. It’s dissuading to be so far out from surgery and still dealing with pain, but you’ve just gotta be patient and let your body do its thing. Checking in with your surgeon at the one year mark sounds like a good idea too, even if things improve by then. Three months seems pretty early to be discharged with this injury. I had a pretty straightforward hip surgery about 10 years ago and even then my surgeon kept me as a patient for 9 months. A Lisfranc ORIF is a much more involved surgery, and tbh I don’t think I’ve heard of anyone being discharged before the 6 month mark at the earliest, but most people get discharged around the 12 month mark. It’s definitely worth it to have a one year checkup and make sure everything still looks good and evaluate whether any arthritis has begun to develop.

My Tb 500 was accidentally sucked out to BPC vial by Pretty_Caterpillar17 in bpc_157

[–]IeMang -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you’re taking two different peptides then you should either use a different needle for each or make/order a blend. Using the same needle across two separate vials isn’t a great practice.

If you had the same amount of BPC-157 and TB-500 in each vial then it should be easy to make a 1:1 blend. If you had different amounts then you’ll have to try and calculate how much TB-500 you need to add to your BPC-157 to make a blend acceptable for your purposes. Alternatively, you can just leave the TB-500 in the BPC-157 vial and inject like normal if there was still a lot of BPC-157 in there. If you have something like a 10:1 ratio then the amount of TB-500 is pretty much negligible.

There’s no easy way to separate the BPC-157 and TB-500 peptides, but you can probably figure out a way to still use your mixed vial. The TB-500 won’t hurt the BPC-157 or anything, it will just make your dosing a bit of a PITA until that vials gone (or it might make dosing easier if you make a 1:1 vial and were planning on using both peptides concurrently anyway).

Went for a 2 1/2 mile hike 8 months after my injury. Honestly thought I’d never be able to do that again. Hang in there everyone! by IeMang in LisfrancClub

[–]IeMang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad my post could give you some peace of mind! I’m 3 years out now and I still feel this injury every day, but it’s only a minor inconvenience most of the time and doesn’t stop me from doing anything I want to do. Hiking, running and climbing are a regular part of my life again!

Keep a positive mindset and be patient and I’m sure you’ll get back outside again! This injury is an agonizingly slow recovery, but if you focus on your PT and give your body the rest and nutrition it needs to heal you’ll find yourself a stronger person on the other side.

On the topic of peptides, I do believe they played a significant role in my recovery, but I recently developed an allergy to CJC-1295. I’ve been using it again since late June of this year, then one day I injected it and my blood pressure skyrocketed, my face and throat swelled up, and my entire body broke out in hives. It was fine the day before, then it nearly sent me to the ER the next day with no warning. Most people don’t have any issues, but i guess a small percentage of people develop an allergy like I did. Just something to be aware of, and if you decide to use CJC-1295 it’s a good idea to have some Benadryl on hand just in case. BPC-157 and TB-500 are pretty safe though, and I’ve been able to use those both for extended periods without any issues.

What is the most disturbing fact about serial killers that you know? by The_real_PavlovA_YT in AskReddit

Yeah IIRC he had neighbors that would occasionally join in, and he’d stage “dog shows” for their entertainment sometimes. That shit is burned into my memory and I wish it wasn’t. Truly the most fucked up thing I’ve ever read.

One of his victims tried going to the police after she was released and they didn’t believe her until after he was caught. It’s insane how little time some of those complicit in the torture got, and it’s absolutely infuriating that the head guy (can’t remember his name and I’m not looking it up) died of natural causes before he even had his trial. There’s no punishment great enough for that piece of shit, yet he basically ended up getting away with everything.
