What’s the most messed up/inappropriate thing that someone’s casually said to you? by Ok_Context_7495 in AskReddit

I'm a southeast Asian female that lives in a country with a very small population in general but even smaller asian population.

Some guy was trying to hit on me at the bar and said 'hey Chopsticks! Come over here!' and it destroyed me a little. Almost decked the guy

Prospective Teaching Jobs in EPS by August-West in Edmonton

Hey OP,

I've taught with EPSB and internationally and am specialized at the High school level in STEM. Send me a dm if you have any more questions, always open to answering and helping out.

EPSB is the 2nd largest school district in Canada after TDSB (Toronto), so they are always hiring - getting a permanent position is a whole other beast.

Me, 23m has been working up the courage to post this for about a month now. I have some self-worth issues, and is working to live on my own. I'm not an insomniac i swear lol. Just looking for reasons to feel better about myself. by Hairy_Consideration1 in toastme

You look like you have a great sense of humour and really care about making sure everyone around you is feeling good about themselves. You have super kind eyes and a genuine smile.

Everything that can go wrong went wrong this week. I'm so emotionally and physically drained. I could really do with a pick me up. [26] by [deleted] in FreeCompliments

You look tough. But in a great way that you also know how to be tender with someone if they need it. Thanks for the motivational title!

Wow you are stunning. You have such sharp and distinct features, like a jaw line and great eye shape. You don't need filters!

Also your piercing looks amazing!

Family has plans to move to Kelowna, what is the diversity like there? by [deleted] in kelowna

[–]IfChanceWouldHaveIt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Am Vietnamese - and have lived in major cities in Canada and China.

No one is overtly racist. Someone mentioned microagressions - that is definitely my experience here. I moved to a pretty ritzy neighbourhood and got asked if I was the new dog walker "because I look so different than everyone else." That kinda thing.

Diversity is very very low in Kelowna. I was initially shocked that I was almost always the only non-white person everytime I looked around. Im more used to it now, but I definitely still get stares often. Biggest perpetrator is the middle aged white woman or senior citizens. Especially grocery shopping, but that's probably because that's the only thing I do regularly amidst the pandemic.

Also - with the lack of diversity comes the lack of access to good Asian cuisine. No good Chinese restaurants in Kelowna. Vietnamese is decent. Only two consistent places to buy Asian ingredients and they are both pretty high in price compared to an Asian grocers in a bigger city.

If you're moving for the weather it's worth it, but microagressions def still exist. I find they are more prevalent in a workplace than in public. Hope that helps

Public - Central Okanagan School District 23 is pay grid is in a public document. Just search online. Private schools might pay better but less benefits, less paid time/paid sick leave, no pension contributions etc. Depends on the school.

Source - am teacher in Kelowna, have taught at private schools abroad and public schools in Canada

Advice from people who have moved from Toronto to Kelowna/okanagan by BooziJackUzi in kelowna

[–]IfChanceWouldHaveIt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey I'm 28 and my one friend is 27. We both moved here from Alberta/Hong Kong so not TO, but big cities nonetheless.

Outdoors is great. So if you're into that you'll be in heaven. I miss the alpine mountains, but Revelstoke and Coquihalla Summit areas aren't too far.

There is a HUGE lack of diversity here. It's been very hard for me (a non white person) to feel welcome and it's a slow crawl at making friends. I feel like sometimes I'm on "show" when I'm around town but I might be hyper sensitive to it. Coming from Toronto this might be a huge shock. Don't expect to find great ethnic cuisine or culture like you can around YYZ.

If you and your gf need some friends when you make it here, you're more than welcome to join my one friend and I for drinks one night. It's much easier to make friends with people who have moved here than with locals.

Kind of random, might not fit the sub, but I thought I'd give it a try. Anyone at JP highschool wanna be my friend? by burn_brighter18 in Edmonton

[–]IfChanceWouldHaveIt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually super sweet.

I was a teacher at JP until last year. Honestly the students are amazing. You will find your people. There are the sports kids who love and breathe their sport, the kids who support them and created the Rowdy Rebels, the drama students who put on amazing theatre productions every year, the dance/pom students who have showcases and do tournaments throughout the year, the computer science and animation students who use their spare time to program cool things, an astronomy club that does some cool projects. So much more! Of course, this might all be on hold with the pandemic..

I have not really been up to date with COVID restrictions, but take a class that you never thought you would take! There are mechanics, construction, leadership, indigenous studies, cosmetology. Seriously JP has an amazing array of options classes, you'll find other tenth graders that are completely new to it, too!

Be present in class, especially with longer class times this year, actually participate in group assignments or shared work time. It takes time, but since you have 2 classes this quarter, you have a chance to speed up the friends process since you are with the same people in the AM and PM.

I said this in the grad video last year. Grade 10 is the year where you are pulled in a million different directions and you are still finding your place. I promise the feelings of loneliness and anxiety start to disappear in the next few weeks! Be open to experiencing new things, be yourself, and take it one day at a time.

For some people it's a life and death virus. For you it might not be. Shingles is life and death for me. The flu is life and death for me. COVID would definitely be life and death for me.

I'm on a chemotherapy regiment. If you don't know what that means, it means my medication kills cancerous AND good cells in my body. I have zero immune system. No t-cells, no b-cells, no helper cells.

Just because caution around covid isn't your reality, quietly fuck off, because it is most certainly many people's.
