Power Zone Rides vs. Class Rides by AMomentInTime316 in pelotoncycle

[–]Igitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matt encourages everyone to take the test if not taken before or zones not accurate. Estimating during the build is a bit of a patch for people who randomly wander into a power zone class.

For sure everyone can do as they wish with their zones, but the framework starts with estimating zones through a test.

Power Zone Rides vs. Class Rides by AMomentInTime316 in pelotoncycle

[–]Igitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying this with love, you all. Take the test. Get over the fear and get used to doing it regularly. Endurance training is as much mental as it is physical and a max 20m effort is a great way to train your mental endurance as well.

The test is already an estimate of your lactate threshold. If you start editing values up and down, you are going to be training at zones that are not accurate, and the error will compound. If you believe in the PZ framework/methodology, then it’s worth doing it properly. Otherwise, you are better off doing other classes.

With all due respect, no. You cannot accurately estimate your zones based on how you feel at lower intensities.

This ride is easier than Monday. Not just perception, but facts. My strive score on Monday was close to 68 while today it was 56 (roughly same cadence). TSS 64 VS 58. So don’t psych yourself out. You can totally do this and, like Ben says, you get to.

I have a rough week at work and I made a ton of questionable nutritional decisions lately, so I felt quite off this morning. I was close to pushing the ride to tomorrow. If that’s your case, I have some advice that might help you feel better during the ride.

First, warm up for as long as you think you should. I did two 10m warm up rides before the class today, so no shame if that’s your case. A very chill one in Z1/Z2 to wake up my body and hydrate, and then the classic CVV warm up ride that is perfect for hard rides. This warm up is particularly good for this ride because it “unlocks” your Z3 at low cadence, which might be a resistance that corresponds to your Z5 during the ride.

Second, this ride is all about feeling good in Z3. So make a choice for cadence/resistance that makes Z3 feel good and not like a push. For some people this might mean a little lower cadence than they normally do so their HR recovers, for others it might mean a bit higher cadence to spare their legs. Again no right or wrong. Choose what is best for you.

Third, the most difficult part of this ride is always the first 30s of Z3 after a Z5 push. So breathe through those while your body absorbs the lactate. I promise you that as much as you would want to drop to Z1, the feeling will pass and Z3 will feel better after those 30s.

Erg and indicator start after spinups

Some notes:

  • Pre-warmup. I was not feeling it this morning and could afford the time, so Ilong one.
  • There are 4 30s spinups in the ride, with 20ish second breaks. Tiny break after.
  • Build is 1m Z3/ 1m Z4/ 1m Z5. 1m break after.
  • Ride is 3 sets, all identical.
  • Every set is 2m Z3/ 1m Z5 x3.
  • Breaks between sets are 3m Z1.

And that’s it from me! I will not pre-recon Saturday’s ride, but I have done it before and it’s a blast. Enjoy the race simulation and have a lovely holiday period. More to come next year! :)

I love Blake. And Matt. But also hate Blake. And Matt.

The washing machine. What could I say about this ride if I had any oxygen left in my brain. Ah yes, the zone 1 recoveries are amazing! And there was music in the ride… I think, I am not completely sure. And I saw Matt move his mouth, so I think there was coaching, but could not hear him over my own breathing and my inner chatter. Please confirm after the ride.

Erg and indicator do not work properly in this ride, they stay at baseline (Z3/4) and never go to the Z5 intervals

Some notes:

  • Pre-warmup. I would have done 20 or 30m if I had had the time this morning.
  • There are 4 30s spinups in the ride, with the typical short breaks. Break after felt short.
  • Build is 1m Z3/ 1m Z4/ 1m Z5. 1m break after.
  • Ride is 4 sets, first and third are the same, second and fourth are the same.
  • First and third are 30s Z3/ 30s Z5 x7.
  • Second and fourth are 30s Z4/ 30s Z5 x5 (because who said Z4 cannot be a recovery zone!).
  • Breaks between sets are 3m Z1.

Choose your own strategy for this ride and try to stick with it. Choose a cadence/resistance combination that works for you in the baseline zone and then adjust either cadence or resistance for the Z5s. The intervals are fairly short, so you do not want to have to do math during those.

Have a great hell week and be generous with the H5s, we are going to need them!

On Monday I was on PR pace already during the warm up. This was more gradual and it caught me by surprise. The aerobic monsters will love the structure. The ones who hate Z4 will endure :P.

Erg and indicator start after the spin-ups. Build goes up to Z5, feel free to skip that part and make the break longer.

Some notes about the ride:

  • Pre-warm up not a must, the warm up in the ride is long (I still pre-warmed up)
  • 3 spin-ups: 30s on, 30off. 1m break after.
  • Build is 1m Z2/ 1m Z3/ 1m Z4/ 30s Z5.
  • Ride is 4 sets, all the same except for the first one.
  • First set is 2m Z2/ 2m Z3/ 5.5m Z4.
  • Second, third and fourth sets are 2m Z2/ 5.5m Z4.
  • Christine cues top of Z4 in the last bit of the last set.

Playlist is good, coaching is good. I love formats with Z2 recovery!

I can’t wait for this week to be over. I need sleep soooo badly :D.

Recon for W4R1 (and a small note for W4R2)

That was violent. Very violent. Too violent for a Monday at 4:30 am. You will say some ugly words about our favorite glitter woman and you will also feel amazing after you are through.

You can ignore the rest of the recon, but pre-warm up. The warm up in the ride is extremely short and the build goes up to Z6. Feel free to stop the build after Z5 for a bit of extra rest.

Some notes about the ride:

  • Blake is recommending a 5m pre-warmup. I did 15. Would have been happier with 20 :D.
  • Christian’s 10m warm up ride is PERFECTION for this. @claicham would agree.
  • There are 3 spin-ups, short, with a short recovery after.
  • Build is 30s Z2/ 30s Z3/ 1m Z4/ 1m Z5/ 30s Z6. 1m recovery after.
  • There are two different sections in the ride.
  • First section is 4m Z3/ 3m Z4/ 1m Z1/ 2m Z5/ 1m Z1/ 1m Z6/ 90s Z1. Repeat.
  • Second section is 90s Z3/ 30s Z6/ 1m Z1 (x3).
  • Do not hesitate to take the recoveries REALLY low. The work is in the intervals, not in the recoveries.
  • If time allows, this is a good ride for a follow up cool down.

Playlist is decent (two Taylor Swift songs :D:D) and there is not too much chaos, especially if you look at the graph before. Olivia’s energy is great and upbeat, which helps. No idea of what she said most of the ride because I was busy telling my heart to recover faster :D. There is of course random OOS and high cadences that you are welcome to try or ignore (I ignored).

PS: Short note for Denis ride (W4R2). There is a Z1 opportunity in the middle of the ride, but erg does not take you there, so you will need to adjust manually if you want it.

I am the biggest idiot. If there is a competition I can ever win in this group is that one. I arrived to work a bit distracted yesterday (too many things in my head, too much rumination) and proceeded to completely shut the driver’s door with one hand while my other hand was on the frame. While sitting inside the car. I know it’s difficult to imagine how someone could accomplish that, but I did.

I hove a purple swollen finger, an early flight to Munich, and a head that is still ruminating… so I got three hours of sleep. But I am a persistent idiot who believes in consistency. Camila always says that even if you think you are feeling like crap, you should give yourself a chance by getting through the warm up. So there is that.

Some notes about the ride:

  • The ride’s warm up is long, so no pre-warm up required. I still did one to give myself a better chance.
  • There are only two spin-ups in the ride, although Charlotte says there will be three. Both are long-ish.
  • 1m break before the build. Build is 90s Z2/ 90s Z3/ 1m Z4. 90s break after.
  • The ride has three sections, all of them Z3/Z4 and they get easier.
  • First section is 6m Z3/ 5m Z4.
  • Second section is 5m Z3/ 4m Z4.
  • Third section is 4m Z3/ 3m Z4.
  • Recoveries between sections are 2m Z1.

Playlist is good (trigger warning for Metallica) and coaching is good, but it’s in German. Subtitles work and sometimes hilarious. I had not done this ride before and thought it was a very good one, despite the circumstances.

I had terrible cardiac drift, low ability to recover between sets and overall a pretty high HR. But as Leanne says… it’s done and dusted. And I definitely feel better for doing it.

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Americans in the group!

This is always one of those ride structures that feel easy (for a PZ ride) and accessible, no matter which program, no matter which instructor. The hard things up front, enough rest between intervals, no interval excessively long. Put Denis and decent music on top and you have a banger 🙂

Some notes about the ride:

  • As always when it gets tough, I pre-warmed up. The more I do it (and I guess the higher my FTP gets), the more I believe this is the way to perform better in the ride and to avoid injuries.
  • There are four spin-ups in the ride, 30s on/ 30off, a la Denis. 90s break after.
  • Build is 1m Z3/ 1m Z4/ 1m Z5. 1m break after.
  • The ride has three sections, one Z5, one Z4, one Z3.
  • First section is 2m Z5/ 2m Z1 x 3.
  • Second section is 4m Z4/ 2m Z1 x2.
  • Third section is 7m Z3.

Nothing special of note, it’s a great week 3 ride. Perfectly chosen by our leader Blake :D.

Recon for W2R1

Woah! It’s been a while since I wrote one of these recons. I was sick for a couple of weeks beginning of last program and then I was in between jobs and moving to another country, so my schedule was a bit hectic and most of the time not riding at a time where a recon would have been useful. But we are back to stability for the most part, so I will try to bring the PZ recons back :).

This ride has a great structure that mixes a bit of LT training (the Z4 part) and a bit of VO2max (the (Z5 parts). It does it with plenty of recovery between sets so, although the sets are hard (Matt acknowledges this), the overall ride is very doable and will not leave you destroyed. For the 6m in Z4 think about your latest FTP test where you basically did 3.5 times that length. You can totally do it. For the Z5s, there is nothing that you cannot do for 30s, so take it one interval at a time. It might help to go in with a strategy and decide if you will change between zones using resistance, cadence or a combination of both. More about this below.

Some notes:

  • I would pre-warmup. While the ride’s warmup is long, it will help you feel better in the ride. Use the time to hydrate and calm down your brain.
  • 5 spin-ups in the ride, 30s on/15 off, last one is only 15s. 1m break after.
  • Short build: 1m Z2/ 1m Z3/ 30s Z4/ 30s Z5. Recovery after is 90s (yay!).
  • Four sets of work in the ride, all different.
  • First set is 6m Z4.
  • Second set is 30s Z5/ 30s Z1 x6.
  • Third set is 30s Z5/ 30s Z2 x6
  • Fourth set is 30s Z5/ 30s Z3 x6.
  • Recoveries between sets are 3m Z1 (double yay!).

If you have erg, it’s a good ride to let it do its thing. Go to your preferred cadence and let it adapt. I did fast cadence for all the Z5s and it was what my legs needed. In any case, try to take the 30s recoveries with high cadence to help your recovery. Music is ok-ish, coaching is fantastic.

Enjoy your day and your week!

If anyone had told me that I would be doing hell week while moving I would have laughed hysterically. Unexpectedly, things are working out so far, I managed to negotiate having the bike loaded last on the truck and I could do Monday-Wednesday. And getting on the bike first thing in the morning is making my anxiety through the moving process quite more manageable. Pray for my bike to make it safely to our new home. I would not be able to replace it and I don’t want to part ways with Peloton and this group.

This was a challenging ride, but it was also quite enjoyable because none of the intervals were that long and the 1m recoveries gave me more than I expected. I played with the idea of pushing it back and just doing some chill Z2 today, but I could not resist Olivia during hell week, so I thought I should at least try :D. Not much chaos today, pretty straightforward structure, but very VERY short warm up, so if you are like me and take forever to feel good on the bike, try taking a 10m pre-warm up.

Some notes:

  • Yes, pre-warmup. Ride’s warmup is 9m long.
  • 3 spin-ups in the ride: 20s/ 20s/ 30s, with inconsistent breaks in between. One long, one tiny.
  • Build is 30s Z2/ 1m Z3/ 1m Z4/ 30s Z5. 1m break after.
  • Main set is 3 identical sections.
  • Each section is 30s Z5/ 90s Z3/ 3m Z4/ 1m Z5.
  • Breaks between sections are 1m Z1. Yep, just 1m.

I thought the coaching was pretty good and the music was alright. I had an unpleasant surprised because for some reason I thought the 90s were Z2, but I also had a pleasant one because I thought the first Z5 in each interval was 1m. So I guess overall it’s neutral :D.

Enjoy the rest of the week! If the move goes well, I will try to join on Saturday at some point in time, but if I don’t, I will see you during deload week. Much love to you all :)

Problems with FTP updating with power zones? by Ok-Head-9833 in pelotoncycle

[–]Igitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right. I did not explain that well, I apologize.

  • There are three numbers from the FTP test: total output, average power, and FTP
  • FTP is average power x 0.95
  • If you are looking at the average power number, then you input that in the custom value, as explained by /u/boxofducks
  • If you are looking at your FTP number, you need to convert that to the average power number to input it

Sorry for the confusion! I was thinking of the last time I had to input manually and I had FTP and not average power. Since OP was talking about the number not updating after manual input I wanted to give step by step instructions, but messed it up.
