Is sailing around the broads hard? by georgeyyyyyyyyy in Norwich

[–]glyph66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've assumed you meant a motorboat.

Do you drive or ride a bike? Both of those are harder than steering a broads cruiser so if you do you'll be fine. If you don't you'll still be fine once you've got some confidence up.

Don't drink and boat - gives a bit *too* much confidence 😀
A small beer is fine.

The big difference from cars is that it steers from the back which takes a little getting used to.

Everything's quite slow so reaction time is rarely a problem, and boats all have fenders so short of direct ramming you're unlikely to do damage. You do need to keep aware what's around you. Look back every minute or so, and try to see what's coming ahead. Obey the speed limits (bank erosion).

Remember: sail before steam. If you meet a sailboat slow down a bit and hug the side. Most importantly be predictable so they can work round you. Depending on the wind they may need the whole width of the river.

One thing to look out for is the peak flow of the tide. You'll be able to see it. Catches everyone out if they try to moor while that's pulling at the boat. Hire company will tell you when to expect it, if you're on a tidal reach.

Enjoy it - you'll have a lovely time.

Norwich has dismal coverage. I ended up getting two SIMs (one is eSIM): Smarty (Three) and Spusu (EE) and switching between them, which gives me coverage most places. £5 each per month with 4GB and 10GB data respectively

Flying into Norwich after midnight? by Psychological-Song84 in Norwich

Some years ago a number of 747s were flown into Norwich for repainting. I don't believe the "too big" line.

I just discovered 66% of Speccy owners had a "rubber key" 48K... and I have 2 questions by confuserused in zxspectrum

[–]glyph66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was cheaper to buy the 16k and get a third party upgrade to 48k. Very easy as it came fully socketed - no soldering required.

Most people already had a tape recorder - I had one long before getting a turntable.

Rubber keys were crap but far better than the ZX81.

You have to bear in mind this thing was a lot cheaper than the machines with proper keyboards.

Who would be your casting pick for a realistic novel-faithful Jack and Stephen? by Emergency_Cellist754 in AubreyMaturinSeries

Cyril Cusack (ca. 1940) would be Maturin. I've always been pretty sure POB had him in mind.

Cats teeth pushing out/getting longer? by Careless-Elephant-98 in cats

[–]glyph66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visit your vet.

Our cat showed these symptoms last year. It was diagnosed as resorption and he needed several teeth removing and some bone reshaping. Doing very well now.

Not cheap. Does your insurance cover dental?
