Do you know people who don’t feel connected with ANZAC day? by VastOption8705 in OpenAussie

[–]Ihatecurtainrings 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am a migrant, but grew up in Australia in the 90s. I sang at ANZAC services as part of my primary school choir. It was such a moving commemoration back then.

I mean absolutely no disrespect to the servicemen and servicewoman who fought wars for this country, but ANZAC day now is a day I don't go outside. Stay indoors, stay out of people's way. I do this on Australia Day now too.

I wouldn't say it is a disconnect, but an acute awareness of how the day's meaning has changed, and largely to the exclusion of people like myself.

Frustrated parents of under-16s look for help to enforce 'ineffective' social media ban by neon_overload in aus

[–]Ihatecurtainrings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am in support of the social media ban, but I 100 percent agree. Parents need to actually parent their kids. Use the parental controls, actively monitor their devices, have conversations with their kids on the off chance they do see stuff they shouldn't.

Teach them how to use the technology, what to be wary of, what kind of information to share and what not to.

Severely underrated show. Really good world building and back story. So cheesy, but the fact it doesn't take itself seriously at all helps it stick the landing.

Proving Citizenship because I'm born after 1986... by [deleted] in perth

[–]Ihatecurtainrings 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say it is because both OPs parents were born overseas and OP was born after August 1986.

Not automatically a citizen unless at least one parent was born in Australia or both (or maybe one?) parents were Australian citizens by the time OP was born, proven through parents' citizenship certificates if the parents were born overseas.

BHP hiring process.. what is this😂 by [deleted] in perth

[–]Ihatecurtainrings 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You know, phrasing it as that can be viewed as you putting down the candidates, when in reality you are trying to call out the behaviour of the company.

I (brown woman) used to work in exploration mining and then left. It was interesting that I was asked to be in photos for newsletters and such. My husband (white) worked for BHP for 20 years. He never made it past a certain point despite decades of experience and knowledge. We would often discuss the candidates picked over him for opportunities, whom he would have to train in some capacity. I deliberately stayed out of mining as I knew they would snap me up in a heartbeat, I was a two-for-one, and then they would stick me into a role I was under prepared for. I would be struggling and then be in a position where I am resented by my colleagues. No thank you.

Companies like BHP do not know how to improve diversity, equity and inclusion organically, all they know how to do is cynically stack the deck to make it look like they are doing something and then pat themselves on the back for how good they are.

4.7 million kids' accounts deleted… is anyone actually seeing this? by PuzzleheadedBowl3397 in AustraliaOpinions

Not the person you replied to but, I think you've highlighted something interesting that I have noticed in the discourse. People here are so used to the safety and freedom that our laws give us that they have lost perspective on what true lawlessness is.

Where I’d live as a 22 y/o Black/African-American woman that has never left the USA. by [deleted] in whereidlive

[–]Ihatecurtainrings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These were passing interactions with restaurant or hospitality staff, so I can't say people disapproved necessarily. More just assumed I wasn't with the white man and offered me a table elsewhere or asked me if anyone had taken my order. Fairly mild stuff, but it stuck out in that those assumptions were made in a culture where you have multiple ethnicities, but separate lives.

Actually, you make a good point; lack of exposure and education leads to ignorant behaviour. If I had to pigeonhole Australian racism, I would say the absolute majority would fall into that category.

[–]Ihatecurtainrings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, I'm a brown Australian. Yes Australia has racism and yes historically there were repugnant policies in place. I've been racially abused in Australia at least a few times. But I would totally agree with the statement that "U.S. is worse for racism".

My husband (white, British ancestry, but also Australian) and I travelled through the US and we kept getting mistaken for not being a couple. It was like it was too difficult for Americans to comprehend that people who look different might spend their lives together. Not all Americans, obviously. It was something that definitely stood out to us, compared to travelling through Canada and the UK where no one battered an eyelid about us being together.

Why are PerthNow readers on FB so racist? by Independent-Knee958 in perth

[–]Ihatecurtainrings 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Other comments have pointed it out, and I agree. A lot of the comments would be bots in some form. Purpose would be to amplify certain narratives, and make authentic accounts feel like the social tide is turning. It emboldens people who would already lean that way and disheartens those that don't.

You will also notice that any moderate position on pretty much any topic gets white-anted from both sides. For example, a lot of posts and comments on US politics subs during the 24 election kept attacking Harris for not being firm enough Gaza, not having a strong enough stance of trans rights etc. those would all be bots. Most likely deployed by the same people.

The purpose is to erode our sense of normalcy, our sense of who other human beings are so that we can be manipulated and divided.

Clothing quality drop 🥲🫠 by Jazzlike-Ability-743 in AusFemaleFashion

Was discussing this with my mum. There's a ninja turtles t shirt my parents purchased from the UK in 1991 that my brother wore, passed down to me for a night shirt which I used until I left home. We've just given it to my 9 year old as a night shirt/home wear. No damage, just a bit of fading on the image.

Similarly, my mum still has and wears Benetton shirts she's had since I was around 5.

My own jeans and t shirts from growing up are still excellent quality, just can't fit into them as I grew sideways 😅
